I have a 300 I6 in my '81 Bronco. 600cfm Holley carb, 2.5" exhaust, etc. etc. I have to pass emissions and it passes them so insanely well that I leave the guys at the testing station floored. I'm talking like 0.9 / 20 PPM CO and 15 / 220 PPM HX. It doesn't have to pass visual, which helps, so all it has is a cat. My '84 (which is the exact same build) has to have an AIR pump, so I just bolt that on and route it into the exhaust when I go in.

The 300 can be just as good as the 302. It really comes down to gearing. The 300 produces more low end torque, but less high end power. It will get off the line faster in a lot of cases. There are people who run the 1/4 and are putting up some sick numbers with the 300i6.

Hey, nice build! I have a similar settup and have one quetion I was hoping you would know. I have a 300 with an offy 4v intake with a 2100 autolite 2v. My question is, which direction do I mount the carb? I have seen carbs mounted with the 2bb running parallel to the block, and some mounted perpendicular. Is there any dif in performance? Mine is perpendicular. Any help would be great!

Looks great! Hows the holley 465 workinf for you. What kind of rpm can u safely get? Some guys talk about putting a 600cfm on 300 I6 i think to much for what i am told the rpm range is. BTW looking to do a lot of the same with my 86 f150 4x4. great truck but stock. a battle to get 4000 rpms.

I did the headers manifold and four barrel carburetor to my 300-6 but it never ran right. I think some kind of aftermarket fuel injection would be much better. Either that or just a two barrel Weber carburetor or something like that because that big old carburetor is way too much gas. I had a 450 Holly and that was too much. I changed it down to a 390 CFM and that was too much as well. Those inline 6 cylinder engines were never designed for that. You're much better off messing around with a 302 or a 289.

that's what happens when you just chuck bits on a stock motor, you have to do the entire engine to get any benefit. They don't spend millions on developing an engine package for no reason from the factory, in most cases they've got the optimum combination sorted, any mods will put the lot out of whack.

Nice! Just curious, did you hog open up that rear part of the Y pipe? You probably know this already, where the rear pipe connects to the main pipe, is really restricted. It can be opened way up. Sound good!

@ramster2011 I am not familiar with 4WD trucks, but if the shifter is moving around, the first things to check are the engine and transmission mounts, shifter and linkages. Crawl under there with wrenches a a good socket set, tighten every bolt and nut. A problem like that may be obvious to see. Don't be offended, but try and use proper spelling and punctuation when writing. It makes it easier to read! Good luck and report on what you find.

It was almost a decade ago so I don’t recall what we were doing but I like wearing gloves when I work, so I was probably fabricating something and paused to watch the first crank after the engine was back together and in the truck.

@stewartlandin7909
@stewartlandin7909 4 жыл бұрын
That may be in stock configuration, but with the offy intake and split efi manifolds he could probably go up to the 550-600cfm range (600cfm would be the absolute biggest unless you were using forced induction/nitrous)

As a common place researcher I do know from multiple sources a 300 is not very fast but they are quite torquey so if you want speed you might as well go with a 302 but if you want a durable workhorse the 300 is the way to go id say just swap to a 302 if you want high speed but the I6 can go fast but you would have to re-gear and put more work into it to ever get the high performance of a 302 that unless you want a unique racer its better on your wallet to go 302.
@RevRandyGarage

Yeah you can modify a 300 to the moon and a 292 Chevrolet inline six is still a easier motor to make huge torque, with less work, you can install 250 6 rockers to give the 300 more lift with out doing a cam swap, but in MY experience it was a waste.

@stewartlandin7909

Don't mind these guys who don't understand other company's made good inlines I have a 302 truck and two 300 trucks and your right the 292's are easier to get power out of and cheaper to modify (although you on average will see 292's priced way higher than 300's new used or otherwise. I personally knew a guy in high school who took his to be dyno'd. He did turbo it put in hyper pistons v-8 rocker arms a crane cam and offy intake/Hedman exhasut. AFR'S were good no spark knock engine was running perfectly until it hit 8 pounds of boost at 3200rpm. He made 270 ish hp and around 375 ft/pounds and the #3 main bearing spun. He put the same motor back together with a fresh forged crank and all clevite parts, 3400rpm 9 ish pound of boost and guess what happened #5 main bearing spun. My point being these inline sixes make they're full potential with turbos and the 292 is allergic to boost, whereas the 240's, 300's, and lesser known and used 250's love boost especially the 250 2v that's aussies made a cross flow head for

Sir I wasted money and time trying to get performance from a 300 six, 96 f150 EFI best I got was 145 hp 170 ft. lbs. and a whopping 16 mpg. If anyone says their 300 six makes more than that they are lying I saw the dyno numbers, others may get a little more but not that much, mine was an abysmal disappointment.
