The Super 25 modified achromat eyepiece which is supplied with most SkyWatcher telescopes is a good cheap eyepiece, but because they are made of plastic they suffer from bad contrast due to shiny surfaces on the inside. In this video I will show you how to sort this minor problem out.
Thank you for watching my video, don't forget to subscribe and press the notification bell as I do regular uploads for the new astronomer.

Excellent! Thank you Jason! Seems so friggin' easy! Why don't they just do it before selling us the eyepieces and scopes? Lousy user experience is the MAIN reason people give up on astronomy and never find out how beautiful the night sky can be… Thank you again.

Thanks so much Jason! I purchased a Skywatcher 10" dob some months ago, and they of course came with the eyepieces you mentioned. However, when I disassembled them, it looks like they have somehow matted the interior surfaces of the barrel and spacer already. It's not nearly as shiny as the outside, so maybe they've been listening to you! Sanded it anyway just to be sure. The glue stick idea is genius! Need something a little narrower for the 10mm, however. All worked like a charm. Can't wait to see the difference as soon as these pesky clouds go away.

Unfortunately I've not had any clear night's yet to use it so I'm the meantime I'm gearing up on enough information to make things easier when I do. I find your no nonsense, jargon free videos so helpful so thanks! I look forward to watching and learning more.

Interesting mod, I tried it myself on a Celestron 25mm eyepiece and it does improve the viewing quality. Only a little bit though, it'll make a $10 eyepiece feel more like a $13 eyepiece. The colors and contrast are a bit more natural and in an A-B test you'd most likely pick the modded one. That said, a new eyepiece (even to an affordable one) is still going to yield a bigger improvement. This is more of a mini project that you do if you feel bored.

Hey bud how you been ? Hope you had a good Xmas . I done all of this to my primary and secondary on my OTA massive massive difference I’m sure you have probably done this too but if not your going to be amazed by the difference in contrast 😉 great vid bud very clear steps for others to follow to others who own a frac rather than a newt you can do this to your main objective ... again night and day difference also to note when you tighten it up as said here it is VITAL to not over tighten I also dull the threads on mine too 😀 stay safe bud and keep these vids coming 👍👍

Thank you, Jason! Excellent video, I just want to know which eyepieces have blackened edges & which don't. I have about 8-9 eyepieces, mostly cheaper Plossl versions. I'd like to know so I can tell which ones to mod. I guess I'll have to disassemble them 1 at a time to find out & fix each. I'm about to mod my focuser knobs w/ wooden rings to enlarge them. Have a GREAT day, Neighbor!
@smalloptics753
@smalloptics753 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Jon. Thank you my friend. Most plossl's already have blackened edges you can sometimes see if they are black just by looking at them in the daytime without dismantling them, if the edges appear white that means they haven't been treated, if you can't see the edges then that usually means they are already blackened. This method isn't totally foolproof but may save you unnecessarily dismantling them. If you look at my latest video about the svbony telescope when I start talking about kellner eyepieces I show a photograph and you can see the white edges of the lenses in that photo meaning it hasn't been treated. Hope this helps 🙂

Eyepiece Kellner in this video is good eyepiece, changed in 2000 year to MA also good eyepiece (reversed Kellner). Some long focus telescope users prefer MA, Ortho, and Huygens than other designs.

Good video, I liked a lot the purpose of your channel, immediately subscribed when I saw your posts. Just a question: this sandpaper needs to scratch the plastic until it is no longer shiny, but how much abrasive must it be? Also, these markers easily dissolve with isopropyl alcohol, and this is what I use for cleaning the eyepieces. How can I clean them from fingerprints after painting? Last one: about eyepieces, is it better to use the original ones modified (mine is equal to yours), or buy another one? If the last option, have you ever had contact with Celestron Omni, what do you think about them?
@smalloptics753
@smalloptics753 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Vitor, thank you my friend. The sandpaper abrasive needs to be medium to medium/fine just enough to take the shine off. When it comes to handling the lenses I would advise using cotton or latex gloves to keep finger marks off them . As for buying a new eyepiece that's entirely up to you, the hack is easy to do so personally I would do it to the eyepiece you already have....it's cheaper that way :) The Omni eyepieces are a great budget range, I've not tried them all but I have the 12mm and it's performs well . The Omni Barlow is probably the best you can buy for the money. Hope this helps, take care, clear skies :)

@@smalloptics753 I think the super 25 is really good, both in amplification (28x in my small 70mm refractor) and fov. Unfortunately, there is no Omni near 25mm, only 32 or 15. What do you recommend? The only think I really worry about this improving is the marker dissolving in the alcohol. Because it is very likely I will get some fingerprint on it, but I would't be able to clean it... What could be done?

1 Use clean towel or paper towel. 1. Disassemble (CCW) inner barrel Lens eye lens down on pt 2. Sitting on a plastic cap and tapping the outer barrel to drop out internal assembly. 3. Sand all inner plastic barrels to a dull finish 4. Black Sharpe the lens edges and corners of edge (2-3 coats) 5. Install rounded side of lens in toward each other on both lens 6. Blow dust assembly and check for any debris before assembly

@smalloptics753
@smalloptics753 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Guptazzzz, I will have a look, I have tried a few apps for that very purpose and what I have found is telescopes tend to give off a slight magnetic field wich interferes with the gyro in the phone and therefore you get inaccurate readings. I don't know if all telescopes do this but all the ones i've tried have. You can test if your telescope is giving off a magnetic field by downloading a free App called EMF detector (There is a lot with that name any one will do) then go round your telescope and see if you are getting any high readings. Unfortunately there is nothing you can do if there is.

A great one to find is the Hercules globular cluster...It' quite easy to find....At this time of year Hercules is in the East, It's quite low at the minuet (but not to low to observe) but it will get higher as the year goes on. You can find the cluster in between the two right hand stars that form a square that are suppose to represent Hercules's body...A small telescope or binoculars will show it well. :)
