Two-Time Hall of Fame basketball coach Doug Schakel, skill development coach for the 2015 NJCAA Div. II National Champions, shows you how to counter man to man defensive pressure. Special emphasis is given to the Point Guard to Wing entry pass and the Wing to Center pass on the Triangle Side of the Modified Triangle Offense. He starts with simple solutions and progresses to more advanced methods of defeating pressure M2M defense.
He also talks about how to maneuver your best players into more strategic locations in the Modified Triangle Offense.

I plan on using the Triangle interdispersed with my Read and React offense - but keep with most of the Read and React rules. One of the things we are almost immediately teaching - is any defender over the read line is an automatic backdoor cut. Wing can run tight off the two post players and clear to the other side if necessary. I needed a zone offense that kept good spacing and movement. This should work coach.

Coach- Love the videos. I am having a problem with the Center and the Post not protecting the ball. What cues or coaching points do you give to these players to protect the ball during a hand-off or a fake hand-off? When are they suppose to show the ball?

Mr. Schakel, what is your opinion on the pros & cons of having the point guard dribble the ball into the wing position every play ? I've seen that on another modified version of the triangle. I like your version a lot, but I can see the benefits of deleting the initial pass from the guard to the wing. Do you have any personal experience with this option ? Im curious how much harder defense they would play on that point guard/wing player, if they started to catch on & see that player always setting up the triangle. I noticed you have a motion similar to it called "Drive at the wing".

Isaiah- Not only can you dribble into the triangle side wing spot, you can dribble into the vacant wing spot on the other side of the triangle side and set the triangle on that side as well....which is a good change of pace. If you Google "Doug Schakel Basketball KZfaq" and click on "Videos", you can see five videos on the Modified Triangle Offense. They cover about any question you might have regarding the offense.

Do you have any video running the triangle offense against live man and zone defense? I'd like to see it against live 5 on 5.

Joe- Sorry for not replying in a timely manner....I just didn't see your post. Unfortunately, I didn't get any game video of the offense. The idea for the series came to me after these girls had moved on to school ball.

When practicing shooting how much of it should be game speed and how much should be slower form focused shooting?
@DougSchakel
@DougSchakel 7 жыл бұрын
That kind of depends on the ability level of your players. Inexperienced players could use more form shooting as you see fit. More experienced players will do mostly game shooting. --Doug Schakel

Hi Coach Schakel, we really struggled against pressure man 2 man denying the entry to wing, center, and rover at the 4th grade level. I reviewed sessions 1- 5 as well. Do you recommend having center screen up for wing cut to basket or down for the rover curl and hit them from the pg position? Entry pass to the center is our biggest challenge and it's the most important part of the triangle side. Need your advice on the triangle side. 2 man side worked well but i'm trying to get more players involved. Thoughts?

Dear Coach, let's say U10-U12 WHAT Kind of conditioning drills is good for youth level team.
@DougSchakel
@DougSchakel 7 жыл бұрын
I only want conditioning drills that involve running while using a basketball. You can do this with an individual who is dribbling the ball or you can run full court team drills that involve running and passing. This way, we are getting in a conditioning component but improving our ball skills at the same time.

How do I become a better finisher at the rim off the dribble, like how many layups should I make a day and what should I work on
@DougSchakel
@DougSchakel 5 жыл бұрын
Three things to help you to be a better finisher at the rim: (1) Make sure in the last step and a half that you ready yourself to change from forward momentum to vertical momentum. If you continue coming at the basket at top speed, too much forward momentum will cause the ball to crash into the backboard with too much force. You want it to be a layUP; not a layOUT. (2) You need to shoot enough layups each day so that, over time, you will develop confidence in your scoring efforts at the rim. (3) As you become more proficient at layups, you can have someone stand near your takeoff spot and they can hold both arms out so that you have to take the ball up and through their hands. You don't want them to apply much resistance with the arms. This allows you to practice finishing through contact. The key here is the keep a firm grasp on the ball as you power through their hands. It is a two-part shot now...part one is powering through the hands while controlling the ball...part two is the actual shot once you have cleared contact. I hope this will be helpful. Best- Coach Schakel

Doug Schakel thank you appreciate it, and how many layups exactly should I make a day
@DougSchakel
@DougSchakel 5 жыл бұрын
@@relaxingsound7563 If you are right-handed, start by shooting 40 layups a day from the right side and 60 a day from the left side. Then adjust as you see fit. It is important to be just as proficient from the left side as the right. Most right-handers refer to their left hand as their "weak" hand. But I don't see it as a "weak" hand. Rather, I refer to it as the "under-used" hand. If you want your left hand to be better for layups, you have to "over-use" until you feel great confidence in your left hand. Hope this helps. Best- Doug Schakel

What position would you put your best scorer at?
@DougSchakel
@DougSchakel 5 жыл бұрын
In the three seasons I coached our youth team, our Point Guard led the scoring twice and our Center once. Because the Modified Triangle Offense is so simple to learn, I would sometimes move our Point Guard into the Rover spot because, in certain games, that was where we had the most open shot opportunities. In our Modified Triangle Offense drills (video #2 of 5), our perimeter players, including the Point Guard, drill out of all 3 perimeter spots. So they are comfortable if we ask them to switch positions during a game. Depending on the opponent's defense, we may move our best player to a different spot to capitalize on open scoring opportunities presented by the defense. I hope this is helpful. Best- Doug Schakel

BTW, if I want the Point Guard to benefit from scoring opportunities that may be presented at the Rover spot, we will start in a formation that has a Point Guard and two Wings. Now the Point Guard can pass to a Wing on either side of the floor and run into the corner to become the Rover.....the opposite Wing rotates up top to become the new Point Guard.

Dribble Push = Shallow Cut
@DougSchakel
@DougSchakel 7 жыл бұрын
DeAndre- That is correct...run a "Dribble Push" at the Wing who takes a shallow inside banana cut and fills the vacated Point Guard spot. Sometimes you have a good player at the Wing and when the Point Guard completes the "Dribble Push" into the Wing spot, you can now reverse the ball to the new Point Guard, who as I said is a good player, and he can now run the Two Man action on the other side. --Doug Schakel
