I remember back in 2004 I was part of the marketing team that rolled these out in Toronto Canada. "For A Faster Generation" was written on the cars. Haha. I was 21 at the time and got to switch back and forth between the 2.4i with 18s and a T5 with 17s for a whole summer. It was unreal. I remember the T5 being wickedly fast with a ton of torque steer. The 2.4i engine seems to have to work really hard but was still a nice car. As Matt mentioned they definitely had that European tightness (especially compared with my 89 Civic Si). They hired a bunch of young 'cool guys and girls' to drive them. Teams across Canada were getting pulled over left and right for racing them as we had to drive in a convoy. Lol. I've always loved the boxy shape and smooth corners of this car. Great review and car!

Keep up the great work, Matt. I love watching these one takes because a lot of these cars are attainable for the average Joe. And you get to see them in action with light to moderate mods.

That's awesome! I drive a 2007 s40 t5 and just have been loving it! The looks are what bought me into the volvo s40 and the power is great for how small it is. Great daily driver car for sure.

Always loved the S40. Debadged with a little bit of cosmetic mods, has the resemblance of an Evo X. I like everything about this one except the wheels. :)

Thanks guys, you just basically reviewed my car! I have almost exactly same mods with totally stock look. I love the engine and especially the sound and torque of it, and it's very comfortable. Hate the flat seats and the non-defeatable "DSTC" stability control system though. But - it's very cheap to buy compared to the performance and comfort level you get, and to mention you do get very similar features and performance as i.e. a mk5 Golf R32. Mine has also been very reliable so far.

Ive got a V50 T5 with custom stainless system, the noise is one the best bits of this car, as is the build quality, comfort and styling.

i bought a 2007 S40 2.4i a couple months ago and i absolutely LOVE IT

These cars are very, very easy to modify/work on. There are a ton of these cruising around the MA, NH, VT area. Its incredible how much information there is on repairing/modifying Volvos if you search around the web.

I used to work for Volvo. There is something cool about certain Volvo's for sure. They get under your skin somehow, and that 5 cylinder howl is addicting.

Matt first of all thanks for this second Volvo "one take" after the S80 T6. Just to make some clarifications with the engine talk. This is the same engine out of an EU MK II Focus ST, not the RS. The RS got the same top and bottom end, but a different turbo. It is significant enough to mention because the turbo is integrated into the exhaust manifold so it is a major difference. Also there is obviously different tuning for both engines and hasn't been quite cracked as a "bolt on" upgrade as mentioned. My advice to the owner, who largely bought a pre tuned car, is to work out the suspension some if they want to drive twisties like this. Ditch the 19" baller wheels and go back to stock 18s. If it isn't riding on adjustable suspension yet go with Koni yellows or even FSDs if stock ride height is desired.

I love my s40. And I love how he mentioned Vermont hahha that's where I live and drive my S40 everywhere. Mountain roads and sharp turns all day!

Driving Volvo S40 T5 AWD Summum for 4 months now, bought it 4 months ago... I never drived more powerful car than this one, this is... Jesus.. almost like Mad Max Interceptor haha, I wouldn't change it now for anything... I LOVE IT.

I have a coworker who has a modified S80 with the twin-turbo inline 6. I'm not sure what all he's done to it under the hood, but It is very fun to drive.

I want Matt to drive my C70. He's right about finding other Volvo gearheads, i've only met 3 in Georgia where I live.

I've worked at a Volvo dealership for close to two years now and I think we've only had maybe 2 or 3 of these get traded in the entire time I've been there. I don't think they were that popular when they were new and now it seems like the people who have them don't want to let go of them.

Hell yeah! they're hiding in Ithaca NY, home of Snabb as well. I've got a 6 speed T5 and I see some others around town, buddy has a nice manual V50. Short shifter sounds real tantalizing now, mines stayed stock so far other than having to replace the rims. Love this car! nice to see some vids about it.

I have the same P1 Volvo S40 2005, but here in the EU we prefer either the 5-cylinder D5 turbo diesel engines /185hp/ or the 2.0D 4-cylinder HDi engines /136hp/ .. What do you have mounted at the rear of the steering wheel just at the finger tips of your right hand? and are you on swedespeed btw?

Bro! Huge volvo fan, just got myself an awd 07 charger as a daily for the NY weather. What's wild is i got the same axis mod 7s 20 10 front 20 10.5 rear love the dish. 2000 C70 has the limited 70 series split 7 spoke chromes, 18 7.5 square. The C70 only boosts to 28lbs atm for eco and is the perfect weekend driver for cornering and mountains. My NA awd charger has more trouble on the NY 9W than the volvo, hopefully I'll find some pd car swaybars to tighten it up and do those retro future rims some justice

btw did i mention that eibach actually makes lowering kits for the s40? springs and shocks :P they are really cheap to imho :P konig makes shocks as well xd

I have a 06 V50 (wagon version of this, although a different engine in mine), and i can totally relate to the pedal problem.. I have a job where i need to wear steel-toe shoes, which are abit larger then my normal shoes.. I have a hard time driving it with the steel-toed ones.. Keep mashing both the clutch and brake pedal

Hey Matt, would it be to much to ask for you to turn the stereo recording in to a mono track, or at least flip it so that the sound playback corresponds with how we see it on the video? As is the guest comes out of the right driver, while appearing on the left. It makes it really odd to listen and watch. I hope it's not to much to ask since it's literally 15 seconds or less of work in any editing suite I've ever used. Just a QOL thing

I have a Volvo s40 but it's stock. What's wrong with keeping a car stock? My car has over 200,000 miles and my goal is to keep it clean and working. While I may add some mods later down the road, i'm focused on keeping it running and just having fun on back roads with that amazing gearbox. (still the original gearbox and isn't worn out at all)

If possible you should try the '98 s40 t4. Absolutely awesome car especially for the price you have to pay.

The audio seems odd. It feels like it is skewed heavily to the right side of my headphones. Perhaps it is the new microphone.
