Modifying A 5 Inch Gauge Great Western Railway 14XX Steam Locomotive - Part #1. This very nice miniature steam locomotive was made in China. Please note that this model steam locomotive is not a "Kingscale" or "Silvercrest" model. The Locomotive has some good and some bad points. In this series I am going to show my approach to improving the model..... Keith, in the us we are unfamiliar with inside cylinder engines, except for the occasional 3rd cylinder. In a future episode perhaps you could comment on this design and why it shows up fairly often in British locomotives.

Interesting that it runs quite nicely, and is well enough in most places. Then again to be fair, Chinese manufacturing infrastructure has been improving so the stuff isn't nearly as bad nowadays as some like to think.

What is the back story on the engine Keith? Did you purchase it? Did a Blackgates customer purchase it and was not happy with it? Or is this a mods contract from the manufacturer to improve the design? Would love to know. Cheers.

Good morning Keith, great series I have watched them all and very informative for a newcomer like me. As said just started in the hobby, far too late for a time served Mech eng. I have just bought my 1st loco from Kingscale a Jinty, which looks very well made. My question is, should I just run the engine and see what happens learning on the way? Unfortunately its ok being capable but you don't know what you don't know. So I guess my question is what would you suggest the best way of learning about all the points you have in this series, to be able to look at something and know that is wrong or doesn't work properly. Unfortunately I live in the N of Scotland and my nearest club is 3hrs away so not easily accessible Look forward to your comments?

is it coal fired or gas fired? I would not recommend running a coal fired model engine as a complete novice. Coal fires are very unforgiving. What I do recommend though, is watching a lot more of my videos, this is not an advert - just an observation. I have covered at least 95% of the things you need to know in my various video series mostly designed for beginners. @@keithappleton Just watching the final episodes Keith, fascinating, learnt so much just on the 1st viewing. I'm just starting with the springing, as that's mech. and I can do that :-) The springs are definitely too strong so now have to figure out what to change them to, other guys have found the loco derailing, on the ones supplied. I have run the loco on air just to familiarise myself, I will have to fill with water and see what happens, wish me luck

Hi Keith in talking about axel feed pumps I am in a bit of dilemma on weather I should fit one to the Super Simplex. I was going to just use two injectors, but would that be the wrong way to go considering that if something should go wrong with one of the injectors there is the safe guard of the pump. I would appreciate your view on this thanks Keith John

Hi Keith, could you please point me in the direction of the relevant website for the chinese supplier/builder? I am unable to buy but am really just wondering how the price/quality equation stacks up
@keithappleton
@keithappleton 6 жыл бұрын
So many viewers have asked the same question - Here is the answer: The Chinese supplier is a trade supplier. I only bought it because I was working on it here in England and it was a convenient alternative to shipping it back to China.
@jaylittleton1
@jaylittleton1 6 жыл бұрын
Already I see disparaging comments about China manufacture. China has made high quality and technically advanced items for hundreds of years. China is also adept at "building to a price", and people buying at the lowest price point get crap. This has fueled the Chinese = crap fires for many years. But China also makes good quality for those willing to pay the price. It will just happen to be a lower price than if made in Italy, France, UK. I own a 250 cc RX3 motorcycle made by Zongshen and it's quality matches many Big Name motorcycle makers. I will be eagerly watching this series to see Keith's view of this little locomotive.

Maybe a stupid question but how do you get water in a boiler when not in use or no pressure In the boiler??
@davidtaylor6124
@davidtaylor6124 6 жыл бұрын
With a hose. Either in through the blowdown valve (where you let the steam out at the end of the run) or take out one of the safety valves and put the water in that hole. Or with the hand pump in the side tank I guess, but that would take forever.

Pardon Mr Appleton, and learned viewers, can someone please explain to me, in simple english, what the number description of a train means. Like an 0-4-0 or a 4-6-4 or what have you. I understand it relates to the wheels in some fashion, but what makes an 0-4-0 that, instead of say a 1-2-1 or a 2-0-2?
@keithappleton
@keithappleton 6 жыл бұрын
I covered that in a video the other week ........
@DAKOTA56777
@DAKOTA56777 6 жыл бұрын
Mooncabbage The arrangement is leading wheel, coupled driving wheels, trailing wheels. So a 0-4-2 has no leading wheels, 4 coupled driving wheels, and two trailing wheels. Conversely a 2-4-0 has 2 leading wheels, 4 coupled driving wheels, and no trailing wheels. A locomotive with mutiple sets of drivers not coupled will have two, or more, middle numbers, like 4-8-8-4, which has 4 leading wheels, two sets of 8 coupled driving wheels, and 4 trailing wheels. Or a 2-2-2-0 like Webb's compounds, which have 2 leading wheels, four non-coupled driving wheels, and no trailing wheels. Tender wheels are not counted.

DAKOTA56777 For clarification for the stultifyingly stupid amongst us, I assume that a 2 refers to a pair, left and right, and a 1-1-2-0 would be a truly bizarro engine. Further, I assume the leading and trailing wheels are idlers, and provide no motive force? Is there a special notation for idler wheels amidships? I really know nothing about steam or diesel trains (or electric ones either, if it comes down to it). I found myself the local train museum not that long ago, and it was all Chinese to me. Unfortunately there was no-one knowledgable around to ask. Thank you for taking the time to reply.
@DAKOTA56777
@DAKOTA56777 6 жыл бұрын
Mooncabbage Yes they are pairs in that it counts individual wheels, so this 0-4-2 has six wheels in total. There is a classification system that goes by axel count instead of each wheel, in which this 0-4-2 would be listed 0-2-1, but it's not as commonly used. Also yes, leading and trailing wheels are idlers, driving wheels provide motive power. In the event of a locomotive with "amidships" idlers, usually those only exist as double system engines like a Garratt or Fairlie type, in which the wheel configurations are joined with a +. For example, an 0-4-2+2-4-0 would have 4 amidships idlers, for the front section they'd be trailing wheels as they are behind the drivers, for the rear section they'd be leading wheels as they are in front of the drivers. As a visual for that, with big "O"s as drivers and little "o"s as the idlers: OOo oOO. These type of articulated engines tend to look very different from conventional engines as the front and back sections are seperated and driven by their own cylinders. So at a glance it looks more like two seperate locomotive chassis being bridged by a single boiler. (Or in the case of a Fairlie type, two engines with two boilers glued back to back.) Also this system is really only applied to steam locomotives, modern locomotives, be they diesel or electric, use a very different system, as the system used on steam locomotives is fairly clunky on bogie driven engines like we have nowadays since they don't have idler wheels, and their wheels are independently driven, not coupled. (Essentially each bogie would be seperate, so you'd have something like 0-2-2-2-0 + 0-2-2-2-0 for your average modern engine if you used this system.)

@keithappleton
@keithappleton 6 жыл бұрын

@reconphil
@reconphil 6 жыл бұрын
There was a locomotive called the Daniel Nason. It was built in 1858 for the Boston & Providence railroad line. It was displayed at the Danbury State Fair in Danbury, CT for many years until the fair shut down and the locomotive was relocated to the Museum of Transportation in Kirkwood, Missuouri. The "Daniel Nason" is the only surviving example of the "Dutch Wagon" type where the steam cylinders are inside the locomotive frame, a design popular prior to the Civil War. If you look at a photograph of the locomotive, it is an "American Standard" 4-4-0 but the steam cylinders are not visible, similar to the locomotive you are working on now. There is a KZfaq video of it too.
@DAKOTA56777
@DAKOTA56777 6 жыл бұрын
reconphil I think that term may be a little more specific to those American locomotive types, as internal cylinder locomotives were quite common in Britain, particularly in the Victorian era where clean lines were prioritized. There are certainly plenty still preserved in the UK.

Keith, you mention that there's a pressure leak under compressed air that wasn't there when you tested the engine under steam... That's actually is _NOT_ surprising... When you test under steam the engine parts are at a completely different temperature (roughly 110 C) then when you test under air (probably roughly 25 C)... As parts expand ever so slightly when at the higher temperature it's possible that said expansion cuts off the leak that's there at a lower temperature...

More 14XX problems.. The previous owners have turned it upside down to empty the boiler, rather than using the blowdown valve. Steam pushes the sludge out on the foundation ring, from the top, down. The entire water system is full of dodgy water, injectors constantly blocked. Running gear is fine. Certain people keep feeding the little chap on dust..

You buy an engine made in China then you have to send it to a professional who's made in England to put it right. The Chinese are immensely clever people but they just don't seem to be able to make anything right--nearly almost right--but not right-on-the-dot right.
@forerunnert
@forerunnert 6 жыл бұрын
English people are just very good at making steam engines. It's where industrial revolution happened so no wonder it still has a large community of hobbyists. Smart move of the Chinese imo: if they can market a product with Mr Appleton's stamp of approval they struck gold. Every garden will have a miniature steam track. Environmentalists will complain about all that coal being burnt. Trump will tweet about having revived coal and take credit while Tesla makes an electrified steam engine bundled with solar solutions. In the mean time tabloids are writing screaming scandals about Mr Appleton's spending habits... It'll be great!
@keithappleton

This engine is what it is - a mass produced Chinese product. I will adapt this and rebuild where necessary to my specification - I can't really give this engine my "Seal of Approval" at all ....... When it runs properly and everything does what it should have done in the first place I will be a bit happier with it . . . .
