Modifying Beyerdynamic DT1990 Pro to take a balanced input

This video shows how to dismantle and modify the DT1990 to take a balanced input. The main job that needs doing is replacing the 3 pin miniXLR socket with a 4 pin one and re- wiring them internally.
You should be able to do this your self if you have decent soldering skills and a steady hand but we do offer a conversion service and also sell pre-modified pairs

I absolutly love Beyerdynamics for this repairability. I always service the headphones myself and order replacement parts from them.

Yes that is one of the main reasons we focus on beyer and sennheiser - both companies sell all the parts separately. They are also really good at keeping parts of discontinued models - sennheiser still sell new parts for the HD414 from the late 60s

If I remember correctly, the 1990 haver a notch in the ring that you attach the pad to - the trick is to hook the pad over that notch and then twist the pad and the notch will guide it into the groove

I had a horrible run with my set just recently (just over a year old). Started with the drivers - both blown (sounded insanely flat). As I began taking out the left driver - I could see the first issue (the soldered points for the XLR plug were already loose). But not only that, the micro JST connector leading from the XLR plug to the driver was crimped and bent. Mind you, these are units that have never been opened - ever! So now I'm waiting for replacement micro JST connectors, solder it in and hope for the best. Even if I have it in a state where the drivers are still sounding flat - I'll replace it and be done with it :-) Currently using my Sennheiser HD600's again and I want to bash my head in - it's just not the same.

hey, thank you for the great tutorial. The damping material is bitumen based. The wire we use in the workshop is far too thick to work with the original connectors but we are designing a DIY kit that will plug in to them so people can mod them them selves without needing to solder. The connectors used are molex pico clasp

@@jonathanleonard9507 It is totally up to you ;) I have an RX8 which cost £2600 I then spent around £5000 on engine mods which probably only gained me around 10% more power - most people would say that it was not a wise investment but I really enjoyed the journey and knowing I squeezed everything I could out of what I had. It is all about how much it is worth to you. If you did it your self it would cost £15-£50 in parts depending on what your cable was like and maybe 4 hours of your life ( so whatever your hourly rate is in work X4 to factor in the value of your time ) . If you paid someone to do it then maybe £50 to £150 again depending on the balanced cable you get with it. hello friend excellent work; Could you tell me what type of mod is the one you use in the plastic cup, that is, what do you mean by saying bitumen based? and where can I get it like the litz wire that crosses the entire headband? and finally what is the purpose of using a thicker litz wire; thanks for your answers and great help in advance friend

We make the litz cables here - they are made using litz wire of roughly 1mm outer diameter and covered in 550 paracord. If you search for sound deadening sheets for cars you should find the damping material we use
