There is no perfect speaker. However, within the realm of imperfect speakers the MoFi SourcePoint 10 is clearly an excellent design, especially for the price point. This was an honest and insightful review!

I heard them in a store for 45 minutes. I was really underwhelmed. They sound like a big studio speaker, they really lack soul. I think there are much better options in the budget categories under 2000 EUR/USD.

Not mine. Had em for 3 weeks now. Broken in and dialed in. Well treated 12x14 room. Made a few tweaks to my curve…. and they quickly became my favorite speaker. PLENTY OF SOUL. Midbass slam is awesome, highs are beautiful, vocals are lovely, and the sound stage & 3-dimensional imaging are tons of fun. To me it’s an exciting speaker. I’ve always wanted a soft-dome bookshelf that gives me the low end of my Dynaudio Contour 20’s plus the vibrant mids & highs of my fantastic Heco Celan Revolution 3’s, and the SP10’s provide that and then some.

Your diffraction comments are spot on. I have designed a few of these coaxial woofers with this size of tweeter. And I can tell you that the bump is there because of the angle of the first horn throat. The closer you are to parallel walls the greater the cancellation potential. There are a number of ways to get the most juice out of the lemon. But there is always a tradeoff in a coaxial design. Nice review. Mark

@@Ctripp2448 He liked having the consulting, the website, the running of two RMAF shows. Measuring, further design consulting. Process consulting for manufacturing. But paying, not so much. It was a learning experience for me as well. I had great clients up until then. The kind that a handshake was a contract. Now, I take a retainer.

Erin it’s so great to have you back! Your reviews are so insightful. I have always been a fan of compression drivers (JBL fan) bit picked up a pair of Kef concentric speakers and I’m really liking them. I have them just off axis and their soundstage is so impressive. So much so I’m just using a pair of them in a phantom center channel configuration. Keep it up! The community missed you for sure.

The off axis placement is a real thing. I have a few HSU CCB-8’s and they require the same attention to detail with aiming. Makes a big difference! Can’t wait to get a pair of these MoFi’s someday!

Thanks for the review Erin. I have three HSU CCB-8’s across the front in our Games Room 7.2.4 Atmos setup, and when I set them up (as they are coaxial speakers as well) there was a bit of tweaking to get them just right. The results from REW, and listening, indicate I got them just right for the room. Of course having dual subs helps out on the bottom end. I hope you get some HSU CCB-8’s to test soon. I think they are a huge bargain for what they deliver.

You're correct, you shouldn't point these type's of speakers directly to your ears. One of my designs uses an 8" dual concentric driver and I optimzed the frequency response to be linear under a 15 degree axis. This solves most of the issues and the result is a very coherent sounding loudspeaker.

In the late 1940s--early 1950s Harry Olson at RCA designed the LC1, a coaxial using a direct radiating cone tweeter at the center of the 15" cone. He addressed directivity and response problems with a diffusor over the tweeter and "speed bumps" on the cone. The LC1 was used as a playback and monitor speaker in RCA recording studios, there are photos of Fritz Reiner and Elvis listening to playback over them. I heard LC1s a couple of months ago and they were excellent.

It would be really cool to get some speakers like that (and older, "legendary" ones) to review. The issue aside from obtaining them is trusting that the mechanical parts haven't worn down after decades of either just sitting on a shelf or being used constantly.

@@ErinsAudioCorner Well, Great Plains Audio makes new Altec 604s in both Alnico and ferrite magnet versions. When Telex sold off Altec the last Altec head engineer bought all the tooling and now makes Altec compression drivers, woofers and coaxes under the name Great Plains Audio. The company also rebuilds old Altec drivers, even to the point of making the phenolic spiders and paper surrounds for 1940s "Hollywood" 515 woofers and 604B coaxes. And they supply new compression driver diaphragms and remagnetizing too.

I had a pair for a while and was quite disappointed with them after hearing so much praise for them. I’d have to try to dig up the measurements I made, but I recall that the tweeter was operated down to approximately its resonant frequency with a first order high pass filter and didn’t look very good in the time domain. With no lowpass filter on the woofer either, the balance was OK (frequency response was pretty good), but upper mids and highs were somewhat rough and lacking in refinement. I would guess that unfiltered woofer cone breakup also contributed to that.

To combat the beaming at higher frequencies, for many of their speakers, DALI have married a dome with ribbon tweeter, the latter taking over at around 10k (if I'm not mistaken) in horizontal plane. For this reason DALI say one really shouldn't toe in their speakers as off-axis it's most linear. Seems like a clever idea, even if it seems counter-intuitive initially. Would be interesting for you to test one... Thanks for a great channel, just subscribed.

Great review! It's amazing how much information you convey without getting bogged down in technospeak. As to the speaker itself - I think modifying the tweeter waveguide could overcome the HF problems without adding cost. A larger VC diameter for the LF unit would allow more space to do this effectively.

Effectively, yes. Or a combo of the two.

Like Erin said, you can do either to get 10-25 degrees. Also, a common technique with controlled directivity speakers such as these is to toe them in. Let’s say you want to cover a wide area, like a couch that seats 3. Instead of pointing both speakers on axis to the central seat, you toe them in so the “beams” cross in front of the main position (imagine 2 laser beamed crossing). The center seat is now off axis to both speakers, but the image is in the middle because they still centered in front of the center. The right seat is naturally closer to the right speaker. Typically this would be louder because you’re closer, collapsing the image to the right side. But now you’re even more off axis to the right speaker because it’s pointing more to the left seat, and you’re more on-axis to the left speaker. So the left speaker gets a little bit louder to compensate for your increased distance from it, and the right speaker gets a little quieter because you are more off axis so the SPL isn’t quite as high. This widens the sweet spot to cover a larger area with more constant volume level at each position, with the image staying anchored in the middle.

@@armandosinger Thanks for the detailed response, Armando! I'm interested in using controlled directivity speakers for my LCR under my 115" projection screen. With such a wide center stage possible with just left and right speakers it seems that a center channel speaker may not be necessary depending on far away from the center of the screen one is sitting. I need my left and right speakers to sit about 11 feet apart, so I'm not sure I could get away with not having a center speaker if a viewer is sitting too far to the left or right from the center of the screen. If I decided to go with a center, I'm guessing the best thing to do would be angling it slightly above or below ear-level when seated. Left and right speakers could be angled in as Erin described or pointed directly at the center seat making sure to angle slightly above or below ear-level. I don't have MoFi money, but would most likely go with three of the Hsu CCB-8s. I've heard great things about these.

Not tryin' to be some kinda ass kiss but this is why Erin is one of the best reviewer's, he really breaks it down and gives it to ya from all angles and listening situations. That little Gangsta Paradise clip with the almighty Andrew Jones pic was hilarious 🤣. I did get a chance to listen to this Mofi's briefly at the Florida show. The room was small, the speakers were up close but I gotta admit I really liked them. Andrew must have had them set up pretty good cause I felt that bass was going lower than 40-50hz in that little room. I didn't think he any subs running but I can't be sure.

I'd love to hear a pair of these. My favorite system runs a pair of diysoundgroup Vortex15 in slot ported 6 cubic feet cabs, tuned to 35hz. I like them 15 degrees off axis, and the soundstage is massive with great imaging, and they are tonally fantastic. I am hooked on them. I fell in love with Urei 604 monitors in one of the studios that I was tracking in, then started using dsp Turbosound coax 12's for my live vocal monitors and that made me take a chance on the 15 coax design, and wow, am I ever thankful that I did. Just great to get lost in music with. Glad that you are back and rockin', Erin!

You asked us to name a passive coaxial speaker that is time aligned. The Urei 809 and 813 systems were just that. In spite of a fairly large physical offset of the voice coils, the passive crossover time aligned them, and the speaker could pass a square wave remarkably well. I haven’t studied the crossover, but I would guess than an all pass network was used to delay the woofer.

I own and love the "KSD C8 reference". An active DSP corrected coaxial setup with FIR filter. I would love to see proper measurements as the subjective radiation pattern blows my mind. Never heard better in close to mid range. I have them cut at 200hz to minimize the Doppler effect. The bass is played by bigger drivers.

Wow, just found out about your life tsunami buddy after I checked this review out. You're not alone Erin. I went through this exact thing two decades ago but the basis is still the same - selfishness. I me my. The X didn't even try counseling or anything. Just SURPRISE! Our current society paves a red carpet for this behavior as I see it. This may seem impossible for you now but you, me, all parents do not suffer as much as kids. Keep your head Erin and keep your priorities clear as this road does not stop here. And keep clear in the future. Do not let yourself be ethically compromised, stick to what your heart says - your kids will be watching with binoculars.

Andrew jones made some pretty nice speakers for pioneer that actually had a real nice crossover designed or most pioneer speakers didn't even have a crossover he also makes great value for the money his Speakers what made me enjoy music the most

Thanks for putting up this review. Great to see an honest review of this speaker rather than all the gushing sales reviews out there. So 3 dB lift in the bass, 3 dB lift in the treble, it's a speaker designed to have a smile response so it will demo well in a store. This type of response is fun but it looks pretty easy to flatten it out. I'm not a fan of ported bass, but passive speakers tend to go that way rather than adding a second woofer to save money.

Interesting for sure as other reviews talked about how “good” the bass was which I called BS on. I have yet to hear a speaker I can afford that is not self powered that does not need subs. My speakers are huge and expensive and I still use subs. Just saying.

@@tombrennan6312 Well yes, from my side. Many others have the same experience but I can’t judge their speakers, because I haven’t heard them. I have a pair of Dali Zensor 1 desktop speakers that sounds great in a small room. Bought new speakers and then did an experiment on my Dalis. Changed on One of the speakers, both capacitors, one tweeter and one bass. Letting them play in the garage for 2 days, then I placed them at their old place and the sound was different and better. More clarity in the upper mid and tweeter, not fatiguing. The bass got tighter and more clarity, then the other, not upgraded speaker. I turned my head many times so both ears would hear the change. Used my over ear headphones as a double check. I believe that a capacitor upgrade does do a lot. Like using a speaker grill of denim jeans and after upgrade it was like the grill was gone. Try to change the capacitor to the same value but with a HIFI graded brand. You will be surprised.

Hmm I still like the KEF R3 better. The directivity is not as perfect but it shows way less resonances. The frequency response is much smoother.

Erin, it's great to see you back. You mentioned intermodulation distortion, that is usually attributable to amplitude non-linearity, not the case here, I believe it's Doppler distortion that produces a similar effect. Regarding the harmonic distortion plots, they appear to be about 10dB higher than you'd expect from a speaker in this class? Please compare it with the Elac Debut 2.0 6.2.

In regards to harmonic distortion, I attribute that to its intended low linear excursion. Which is why I’m not surprised by it.

So you agree the distortion is higher than a non-coaxial speaker, like the Debut? The Kef Uni-Q designs do not appear to suffer from the same effect.

Hey Erin! Great content, as always. Question - I got a pair of these used for an absolute steal (around $1,500 with stands). I agree with your assessment that the high-end is a bit pronounced/forward for me. I was thinking of addressing this by 1) using in-app EQ on my WIIM to knock everything above 4k down by 2-3 decibels and 2) potentially pairing with a better amp that may bring out a warmer sound, potentially an ArcamSA20. Does this seem like a reasonable approach to you?

I’d use the EQ. I wouldn’t bother trying to match an amp. You’ll be chasing your tail.

Have you tested the most famous coax, the Altec 604? (Still made today by Great Plains Audio). The 604 was used in Urei monitors with a supposedly time aligned passive crossover by Ed Long. Long copyrighted the term time aligned. Jeff Markwart designed DIY passive crossovers for various versions of the 604 which are supposedly "phase corrected". These crossovers are popular with 604 fans though I expect more for their voicing than any phase correction.

Dual concentric drives are much like horns in placement. My Tannoy's need no toe in, zero, none. Hans Beekhuyzen taught me a lot about this.

I live in a small townhouse where i have to place to my speakers up against the front wall. You mention that …. Placement near a wall can increase the base but the “wall bounce” will create a “suck out” in the mid-range area of 200 to 500 hertz. That is the “trade-off” between sacrificing a little midrange quality to get some extra base. What features can look for in a speaker that will perform its best when placed against the front wall? If you set in a triangle aprox. Isnt you as a listener getting them more on axis if you turn them against yourself, if they point straight out in the room my ears are not on axis with the tweeter, far from, hope you know what I mean, But You should toe them in against your listening postion so its about 10-15 degrees of axis from one´s ears i suppose ?

"Linear" is a poor term to use when referring to a flat frequency response. A frequency response of a very linear speaker or a linear system can be far from flat. The over use of the term linear will just cause confusion. A speaker with a non-linear response will produce harmonics when it plays a sinewave. A linear speaker will produce a single sinewave when it is reproducing a sinewave. The amplitude may be different, but that is not due to a non-linearity. A linear speaker has low harmonic distortion. A flat speaker has a flat frequency response. I have noticed other KZfaq content producers starting to misuse this term as well and it will cause confusion.

In the context, I’m using it, it’s born from the term “linear distortion“ which is a deviation from flat frequency response. Not to be confused with “non-linear, distortion” which is distortion that varies with Output (HD, IMD, etc).

Very true. Plus the added confusion from a linear FUNCTION being described via ax+b, but for a linear system an input vs output plot at a certain frequency will have b equal to zero.

Correct me if I'm wrong. It's already phase aligned to get proper summation. Just the low frequency driver itself just don't have the high frequency content in signal that rise the impulse response that fast. The initial rise in the impulse response it the point to align, not the peak position.

@@ErinsAudioCorner That'll need FIR filter to correct the phase shift caused by the corssover. Still there's nothing wrong with the "time" of both units. You can see the impulse response shift by the crossover simply using REW to create a 0-1600Hz LPF (woofer) by EQ tab, generate EQ response and sum it with 1600 - infinity Hz HPF (tweeter). The summed FR would be perfectly flat yet the impulse response would like the one you see on the passive crossover speaker, though there's no any time delay applied to both responses.

Great video as always. On your point of a tweeter and woofer not being time aligned in a coincident design, how far would the tweeter need to be offset from the woofer? And would that offset be physically possible?

Both voice coils would need to be physically aligned, which will push the tweeter quite a ways back into the motor structure of the woofer, and that will be different from woofer to woofer. Then making that work with a tweeter, especially a soft dome, pushed back 1-2" into the woofer is going to cause a lot more reflection issues than it solves. (Take a toilet paper roll core, cut it to 2" long, and put it around a tweeter measure the response) Even compression drivers used in a coax configuration aren't aligned as they are often positioned 2-3 inches behind the voice coil of the woofer.

I am curious as well. I have a few of the HSU’s and I have embarrassed myself spending more on other speakers that simply don’t deliver the same “wow” levels of subjective performance. Curious how they measure objectively. My only complain is in home theater use, the center channel (just another Ccb-8) isn’t the most aesthetically pleasing thing to look at.

Actually, that’s a good idea. Though, there may be other options. Heck, you may even want to wait to see how the new 8 inch version of the speaker performs. If you’re using it in a home theater, you will be using subwoofers and the 8 inch won’t impact you that much. No pun intended.
