I am Dr. Mohammed Hasnain, I'm a general neurologist who has been practicing in Southern Indiana for the last 20 years. I see a full gamut of neurological diseases including stroke, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, migraines, neuropathy, myasthenia gravis. I also see sleep disorders including obstructive sleep apnea, narcolepsy, restless leg syndrome, and parasomnias such as sleepwalking, night terrors, and REM behavior disorder. So sleep disorders are, they affect life because if you don't get a good night's sleep, you're going to be suboptimal during the daytime. So it affects all aspects of your functioning during your waking hours if your sleep is not restful. The most common cause of restless sleep is sleep breathing disorders, such as obstructive sleep apnea, and it is easily treatable with CPAP therapy, sometimes dental appliances and occasionally implantable devices such as Inspire. Narcolepsy is much rarer, but also much more severe. So patients with narcolepsy have a very hard time staying awake during the daytime, essentially incapacitating them, and there are treatments available for that condition too, which work very well and help them function during their day and perform their activities of daily living.
When they first come to me, I ask them what is their main complaint, what brings them to me and what their expectations are. I get a full history of when the symptoms started and how they progressed during the years or months, and then tailor a treatment plan for them that would help them overcome whatever disabilities are affecting them. So I'm originally from Pakistan and I came here after high school. My family moved to United States and I first came to Texas where my family first settled. My professional journey started at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, where I finished my MD and PhD degrees. Following that, I moved to Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, where I did my internship. And after that, I went to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics where I finished my neurology training as well as fellowships in sleep medicine, epilepsy, and clinical neurophysiology. I go hiking. I love nature, so whenever I get the time, I go hike in the national parks or state parks. I also like to kayak and bike, so more physical activities, as much as I can get.
