The way she is vocalising the beats is called TARANA. Tabla players, Mrindangam players etc. use this method to identify beats instead of sheets. She is using taranas to keep in sync while he plays the patterns that she might have dictated. This takes translation of the knowledge basically, if you have knowledge of both sheets and taranas/ragas/sargams, you can easily cooperate with a western instrument.

It's an essential part of learning indian Carnatic music, you have to count the rhythm on your fingers
@droidgeist
@droidgeist 6 жыл бұрын
It's not just part of Indian Carnatic music though. Europeans use their digits for counting, but people from the Indian subcontinent use knuckles. This is how kids count in maths classes. It's how religious people who don't have rosaries at hand keep count of their prayers too. It's usually either base-4 or base-5 (3 knuckles, tip of finger, and reaching over the finger to touch the knuckle).

Did anyone notice the pattern, Mohini Dey performs with her right hand? It's quite obviously not the sequence of plucking strings (she uses a five string bass, but tips on only four fingers with her thumb), nor is it the sequence of strings she frets with her left hand. But I cant't help suspecting that it has something to do with the "Konnakol Games" title.

In 1970 we watched in amazement as Ravi Shankar and Allah Raka engaged in this (never knew what it was called) for several minutes. They then traded bars upon bars of indescribably complex phrasings on the instruments.
@spdcrzy
@spdcrzy 11 ай бұрын
Konnakol is the South Indian classical process of saying the individual beat notes. What Ustad Allah Rakha (RIP) And Ravi Shankar did is called jugalbandi, literally "entwined twins". Each person starts out with, say, 128 bars to develop a theme. Then they start trading. 128 (1), 128 (2), 64 (1), 64(2), 32(1), 32(2), and so on until they're both riffing on each bar after bar. Eventually, it devolves into each person playing every other note, then every half note, then every quarter note, and then the braid, as it were, is finally finished and the ending is done in unison.

@theminiscript6595 6 жыл бұрын
Kevin Bayley You are right its 4/4 in a slightly different way. In Indian music Its a progression of 16/4 and its called teen-taal (taal means beat) and is not 4 bars of 4/4 because in each bar the phrasings are different. And on that structure of 16/4 they were doing 16th notes 16th notes triplets 8th note triplets a few quintuplets and septuplets and a few polyrhythms😅

@kevinbayley3913 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the explanation, I've heard the Indian way of counting before in a video with Pete Lockett but didn't know this was based in 16/4 and never heard of teen-taal. This is the kind of stuff which makes you really appreciate metronomes haha :)

Pett Lockett is a brilliant percussionist.. I just love him..But a problem in Indian music system is until and unless you learn from a teacher for years they don't reveal the intricacies, there are a lot of secret knowledge that remains bound to the domain of only the teacher(we call them guruji) and the student..Until and unless you are capable enough to play in that level, the secrets of playing are not revealed.. And indeed we understand the value of metronomes here😂😁😁😂😂

As a drummer who studied alot of odd meters and groupings in my youth I don't find this so taxing now. However!!! It's Marcos instincts for his choice of sticking throughout this sequence that challenges even the most advanced rhythm nerds! His alternating stickings are not mere habit nor impulsive habit. He is incorporating rudiment application based on sound quality as fitting to his intended melodic performance. Single strokes can be played through out with no hindrance to execution and especially when played on one sound source, the pad. Minneman joyfully and easily cycles through singles, doubles and certain paradiddle patterns and inversions while holding down the rhythmic melody. He is no show off though. Every take is with purpose. His doubles are with distinct character that had he used singles it would have had a different effect. While I can totally follow the phrases and their subdivided groupings against the quarter note pulse, I'm am admittedly miles away from from producing anything close to this performance because of minnemans unique genius for rhythm playing. I'm glad I'm inspired and have inspiration. Let us all share and celebrate that. Big support for all you drummers out there from me. Ps, that singer is a drummer too. Great rhythm she has shouldn't I mention

Well that explains why I felt she had other musical formal training outside of vocals. Thanks for your insight. She is incredible at rhythm, thanks for o you I'll check her melodic playing now too
