Superficial Radiation Therapy, or SRT, targets and attacks non-melanoma skin cancer cells at the source without cutting the skin. Furthermore, there is no downtime and patients can return to their everyday lives right after treatment!
SRT skin cancer treatment can remove lesions on the arms, legs, back, and trunk, and it is especially efficient in treating skin cancers on the face, head and neck. It can deliver a controlled dose of Superficial Radiation Therapy to delicate areas that are hard to treat, such as those along the fold of the nose, eyelids, lips, corner of the mouth and lining of the ear. Thank you for your video Dr. Susan. 3/18/22 will be my last treatment on my temple (1.5 by 2 inch size) out of a 20 protocol. I am very happy I chose the radiation route, and while I see slight improvement, my doctor tells me the cancer is gone, and will take some time to getting back to normalcy. This makes a lot of sense for someone who is already older. I have an upcoming appointment. What if the doctor resists doing this procedure?

If you request this alternative to surgery and it is not offered, your physician may not have the devise in their office. You should look for a physician that offers SRT. Sometimes doctors don’t suggest what they can’t provide. But you can search for a doctor that does have all the options, including this one.

Doctor, When it comes to a diagnosis of micronodular bcc, on bridge of nose, would treatment with IG-SRT be a better option than Mohs, given that the IG-SRT can somewhat saturate an area, and in theory destroy these drifting islands of bcc that would possibly be outside of a clear Mohs margin? Thank you in advance for your reply.

This is only superficial radiation, different than the penetrating radiation that you’re referring to for deeper cancers. Treating only the skin, which recovers well, no other local injury occurs. Best to you

The trouble with radiation, it also burns the skin around the tumor it kills. If the cancer comes back to this area because the radiation area has no blood supply they would have to remove a much larger area probably needing harvested skin to fill the void they cut out. With cancer, insurance will approve including cosmetic if needed. Where radiation is helpful is for people with a lot of medical issues that may not be able to handle the trauma associated with surgery. My cancer was deep in my nose. It took a long time to detect, giving it time to lay in there and get big. I needed a general surgery setting. Fully knocked out with anesthesia, the assault to the nose to remove the tumor is a hot mess. I’ve been told it will take 6 weeks to recover. There is such a thing as not being well enough for surgery. I admit, the nose connects to the brain, eyes, and sinuses, it’s a tricky place to have surgery.
