The French emphatic pronouns, also called stressed pronouns (les pronoms toniques) are moi, toi, lui, elle, nous, vous, eux, elles, and soi. They are used to emphasize and can be found after French prepositions such as à, de, sans, pour, etc. But also after c’est and ce sont.
If you want to emphasize even more, you can turn them into moi-même, toi-même, lui-même, elle-même, nous-même, vous-même(s), eux-mêmes, elles-mêmes, and soi-même. Learn French easily with this quick lesson!

Madame Dylane, Your lessons are brilliant and perfect. And as for me I love that you do not translate sentences to English, because they are already written on the screen, I do not want to hear them aloud in English, for I already know the language. It is a fact for me, I had discovered my memory retain the most if I only hear in French. My gratitude for your hard work to help us learned in the best possible way.

I've never heard of the pronoun soi before, all is new to me, like you said it's a rare word, I've read that French uses stress pronouns alot more than English so I'm just doing my best in French I can to become fluent, I've been fiddling around languages lately and I was ultimately lazy to study

Merci Dylane. I would like to make sure I understand this. So if the verb requires the preposition "à" or "de" we would also use that preposition with the pronoms toniques, par example: Le chien est à lui.
@TheperfectfrenchwithDylane
@TheperfectfrenchwithDylane 5 ай бұрын
Not always Christine. In most case you will need to change à + the person into an indirect pronoun. J'ai téléphoné à ma sœur - Je lui ai téléphoné. Does it make sense? Also it's good to see you in the comments :)

That's why I prefer learning French over any other language. Unless you're somehow immersed in the language, one can only learn it with desire and discipline to overcome it's grammatical complexity and absorb its richness.

Salut Dylane. I am revising via your grammar book and the Netflix series 'Irma Vep'. In one scene the wardrobe manager(woman) wants the producer(man) to explain the terms of a contract to a group of actors. He starts to explain to her but she gets annoyed and says: Tu le leur expliques à eux. Is "à eux" just added for emphasis? Because 'Tu le leur expliques' seems to make sense by itself. Merci d'avance.💙
@TheperfectfrenchwithDylane
@TheperfectfrenchwithDylane Жыл бұрын
You are right when saying that it's just for emphasis. It's not good grammar to have a double reference like this :)

Could you, some day, do a video scrutinizing the french dialogues in the Tarantino's movie Inglorious Bastards? I watched a couple of videos like this but they don't have the same quality of yours videos. I guess would be great for us viewers because they're many french dialogues at this movie with formal and informal form.

Bonjour Dylane, merci pour cette merveilleuse vidéo! J'ai une question - je ne suis pas sûr la difference entre les pronoms toniques et d'autre pronoms, comme "en" ou les pronoms d'objet indirect. Par example, quelle est la difference entre les deux phrases: 1. J'en ai besoin vs 2. J'ai besoin de lui? Pour les objets indirects; pourquoi on dit: "Je lui parle" et pas "Je parle à lui"? (En anglais: I am talking to him). Un autre example: pourquoi on dit: "Je pense à lui" et pas "Je lui pense"? Je suis désolé si j'ai fait des erreurs dans ce commentaire, merci d'avance!
@TheperfectfrenchwithDylane
@TheperfectfrenchwithDylane 2 жыл бұрын
1. J'en ai besoin vs 2. J'ai besoin de lui? = En ne peut pas être utilisé pour les personnes (techniquement) "Je lui parle" et pas "Je parle à lui"? = Lui remplace "à lui". Il y a seulement quelques verbes comme penser à qui ne changent pas mais ce sont des exceptions. Donc pour résumer, en jamais pour les personnes, et la plupart du temps lui est avant le verbe :)

Hello again Dylane and thanks for yet another extremely helpful video. I have a question regarding the used of emphatic pronouns with the preposition de. You gave an example with the verb "avoir besoin de" at the minute 2:56. Is it grammatically right to use the pronoun en as we learned in previous lessons? The sentence will be " On n'en pas besoin" . Merci pour vos efforts.

Hi Dylan, Interesting video. I need perhaps more time to process this information. The emphatic pronouns with même /mêmes is equivalent to the English reflexive -self and am wondering in French how do I know when use the reflexive verbs vs the emphatic pronouns in writing and conversation?

Very good question Sara, let's look at an example: Je me brosse les cheveux - I am brushing my hair Je me brosse les cheveux moi-même - I am brushing my hair by myself. As a way to emphasize that you are doing it alone without the help of anybody else. Does it make more sense?
