I love how this joke came out at the exact perfect time where a lot of people *could* have believed it. Mojang just made huge, sweeping changes to the nether, as well as hiring the team that made the aether mod, so some people, of questionable intelligence, or whom do not own a calendar, would have believed the idea that at that point, Mojang would have simply gone “F*ck it. Infinite dimensions.”

In the official Minecraft Wiki it literally said that the update is probably in reference to your video. That statement got removed tho

Mojang makes fun of its community all the time for bad ideas. A developer "criticized" someone's idea for replacing the Strider mob with a fire variant of an already existing mob (I think it was a lava spider they requested?) But like you said, Mojang is above that and he mentioned he wanted more weird creatures like the Creeper and felt that just adding fire variants of existing mobs to the Nether is uninspired and bland. He likes when Minecraft is weird and I do too :). (This all came from the Aether developer who now works at Mojang)

When we're talking about randomly generated dimensions, mystcraft exists.

I really love this idea and would love to play it, the only problem is that it doesn't fit within vanilla minecraft. It is an entirely different experience, thematically and in the gameplay. It seems incredibly interesting, though, and that's why I'm so happy that it's becoming a mod, what it always should have been.

The multi-layer transparency thing is an interesting idea but I can't imagine the results being anything other than random-looking textures. You might as well just randomly generate the texture completely at that point, I'd maybe try using perlin noise for each of the RGB values (I guess an offset would be required to make sure that all three values aren't the same).

I think the issue really just comes down to the idea of having "infinite" things in a game is shallow at its core. It's novel and it's neat. Unless there's something compelling or unifying, though, it'll just be a gimmick. That's the main reason I think the idea as you've speculated it would be implemented isn't the best for the game. It would be pretty sick if there were a game out there with infinite possibilities of textures and interactions and blah blah blah, but that's clearly not what Minecraft is meant to be and that's okay... That is exactly why you working with a team of modders to make your idea come true is great!! I hope you bring up to them though the problem at its core, the shallowness. It would be awesome to see an implementation of your brand of infinity done as more than just a spectacle!

I had the same idea when I heard of the snapshot, started survival in it, quickly collected a stack of obsidian, farmed a bunch of chicken, squids, and cows, and started entering random dimensions. The idea of finding a unique way to progress in the game that was never considered or thought of before was exciting to me. But it didn't really work out. I did find a dimensions with the ground being diamond blocks, but that was about it. There was nothing new, nothing extra, and certainly nothing unique. The only advantage these dimensions gave to the game is that they're aesthetically pleasing to look at, and that's it. LIke Jay said several times, the snapshot is just a joke, but an update where you can go into completely randomly generated worlds while allowing the player to have a unique method of progression in the game would make me play for months.

As cool as this concept sounds, it doesn't seem like something that would go further than a mod without altering the feel of Minecraft as a whole.

The issue I leave with the infinite dimensions is that it leads to players all disappearing into their own dimension and never meeting (like how it goes with mystcraft)

8:41 Actually, Plague Inc does this to an extent with it's evolvable traits. It basically has a bunch of different symbols you can put on it, like a head, heart, brain, eyeball, etc. As well as a bunch of overlays you can add to it which allows for a lot of different possibilities.

This was the first thing I thought about when I saw the snapshot post, it was absolutely hilarious and clearly mirrored the idea you made a video about, and yet they clearly poured a lot more effort into it than you'd expect and they made something that was genuinely pretty cool even if it's a bit shallow.

this sounds like the rise of a Disney villain, he pitches an idea to his boss, his boss laughs at him, he quits, in the future he makes a campaign to destroy the company, it fails but he gets RICH and becomes the CEO and he becomes evil and fires the old boss and tries to take over all video games

I think throwing books with specific names like "Library" or "Water" into nether portals in order to go to specific dimensions should be a real feature, but I don't think it should be totally randomised. That way there are new dimensions but there aren't computer-breaking hellscapes.

Mojang's April fools snapshots usually aren't trying to make fun of something, but instead are testing some tech they plan to implement in the future. Nearly every previous April fools snapshot has had some part of it implemented into the main game in some way. (To further solidify this, one of the Devs hearted a comment I made about this so yeah. They will probably implement this as custom world generation or something like that)

The April fools update was the most fun I've had with minecraft in a long time.

Idea for the mod. What about "Random challenges". Imagine if you enter a newly generated dimension, but... Woops! You only have half a heart, or can't use weapons, or every enemy is giant, or invisible, or maybe there is a timer, or rarely all of this at once. This last part would only have like a 0.000003% chance of occurring, or something absurdly low like that. To prevent cheating, all the items that you have in your inventory would stay in a chest next to original portal, a pop-up screen would appear to inform you of this and all the challenges that this world has. And if you ever go through the portal again before reaching a certain milestone (say, beating the final boss of that world), all your items would be gone, the portal would close, and if you open it again, you would have to start all over again. Obviously, there should be another pop-up screen to inform you of this before you try to go back. Another good idea that also mix really well with that last one is "Random achievements". This achievements would be tied to that dimension only and you wouldn't be able to unlock them in others. Obviously though, this achievements wouldn't be completely random, you can't demand the player to get 100 pieces of wood if there's no wood on that world, but you get what I mean. Also, I don't know if this is feasible, but it would be nice if dimensions were somehow tied to the original seed of the original file, that way players would be able to share portals and compete in this challenges. Like if someone gets a rare challenge dimension with 10 challenges they can share it with their friends like "input this seed and create a portal in this coordinates and you will have the same portal as me". Now, obviously the portal itself would have it's own seed which would only affect the terrain generation. Just a thought though.

I think they might legitimately be making fun of you due to how popular your video got in the minecraft community (which they obviously pay attention to) so it’s not a strength to assume they saw this idea and made fun of it

About the textures, there's a thing called Perlin noise, some games use Perlin noise to generate worlds (maybe Minecraft also using it). The Perlin noise can be randomly generated and later it's used as a height map to generate worlds. After all the Perlin noise is a TEXTURE. So basically we can use it as a texture for the blocks

I have an idea to add to this. Instead of the dimensions’ portal right were you spawn, it is a few thousand blocks away, making you need to explore to find it. Like how strongholds can generate +1000 from 0-0

Reminds me of the time Flight Rising added eye accessories for april fools that was actually a market test to see how much people would be interested in an eye types update. A few months later, it was added. Now I'm not gonna say Mojang will add this, but it's definitely tested the waters for mods like the one brought up in this video.

I mean I understand why they wouldn’t add this because if it was all randomized then they would have no control over losing a lot of hard work like if you go to a dimension that’s just full Blocks at instant kill you then that would be quite unfair to the player

I really want this April fool's update to be an option in the menu you can enable at like the cost of achievements or something, they didn't even leave bedrock players try it out which is the majority of the community and it sucks, it is such a cool idea that will now only be a joke

Man, life's real screwy, ain't it? Like, the fact that this almost DEFINITELY is just a coincidence is just further evidence to the pile that the last decade has been an ever-escalating stream of shenanigans, and this year is where it all comes to a head.

I feel like adding this infinite content would end up ruining the game by adding an infinite amount of content, you would also be ruining the simplicity of the game. instead of thinking 'oh I can go do x to get x,' you would almost have to keep a complex spreadsheet of what all would be where. Also, as a long time minecraft player, I was relieved when I realized that the snapshot was a fake.

So your suggestion was basically: "Hey you should do what No Man's Sky did because that definitely didn't make the game boring after a few hours". Sounds better as a mod than an actual worldtype or gamemode. Edit: i didnt think i needed to elaborate but i specifically meant NMS as it was when it was first released. The point is, randomly generated dimensions would get old after some time, unless there was more purpose to it.

Also, for the mod, (it might already be like this, idk) you might be able to create new (block and item) registries upon entering a dimension, so maybe you could use the overlay idea somehow with random generation for the different overlays/colors, maybe even randomizing the number of new things to randomize. 8:13 Yay, now I can have a random mess of pixels as a texture! Jappa would be proud. Also, I think you fundamentally misunderstood Minecraft, especially Vanila Survival. Sure, it would be cool to have such a mod or another game that does this, but that would not be regular Minecraft anymore. Survival is carefully balanced and worked out in a way that all the features work perfectly into each other (or most at least). If you can just make a portal and a book, write a specific code word into it and suddenly you have infinite diamond blocks, then that's just not something that should be part of the regular Survival game. Or if you go somewhere, touch a harmless looking block and suddenly you're dead and your stuff is gone, then that sucks as well and is not connected to the rest of the game in any way. And I think even you will get bored of that mod pretty quickly, no matter how well it is "balanced" or tweaked. Mainly because it just gives you stuff to look at or discover, but not much new stuff to do beyond that. Minecraft is all about changing the world to your liking, not about jumping from one to the next over and over again.

I still really love this idea and can't wait for the mod to be finished

if you like this stuff you should really look into the Mystcraft mod!!!! it allows you to generate completely random and sometimes totally wacky worlds, and then gradually find "pages" that dictate world traits and slowly learn how to build your own worlds (but the "grammar" of the order you put pages in is super important and can create unstable ones) but u could also just keep generating wacky ones its super cool

Now this raises some questions as far as the game goes. Does what you type with the book and quill matter or is it all random? Like does the book and quil get read kind of like the seed generator? If so you could potentially take advantage of it if you could learn how to decipher how it works and get a world like what you want.
