Hey! Kian from McWar here First of all thank you for covering the topic, honestly the most devastating issue as gun server owners is that even if we did want to comply, Mojang simply does not tell us specifically how to comply outside of vague terms like "guns look too realistic, they are named after real guns", what about sounds then? What exactly differentiates a "realistic" gun and a non realistic gun? Would a gun name that sounds like a real gun like MM71 be allowed as it's not a "real gun name" even though it sounds like one? We just don't know anything and as the situation stands they're just arbitrarily choosing what complies and what does not without setting proper guidelines for it

Honestly this feels like a betrayal of everything Minecraft meant at launch. They encouraged the community to do what they wanted. I was never the biggest Minecraft fan but I applauded the developers for being great in that regard. Now it hurts. Also the game has swords which have been known to take limbs off and Bow's and arrows which you use to shoot people.

No no, that would be intelligent and logical. We surpassed that a long time ago. No. EVERY Minecraft server has to be kid friendly. No swearing or you get banned by Mojang from playing on servers with your friends. @joshuavidrine889

Just remember, this started with "account migration for safety purposes." Then they implemented reporting and multiplayer banning. Now they're saying "no gun imagery in public servers." Next it's "no mods glorifying violence." You'd see this coming from miles away if you understood the type of people in charge of and working on this game now. Corpos trying to be overly sanitized to be advertiser friendly, Europeans that think America is nothing but one big shootout and don't realize that the vast majority of gun deaths are "self-deletions" because society has gotten so screwed up and no longer incentivizes nor rewards normal, traditional values and behaviors and shoves good people into corners that seem inescapable. At the end of the day, it's about controlling what you can do because they think absolute freedom is too scary and irresponsible to be allowed, in a game where the world is your sandbox to do with it as you wish.

The main issue I have with this situation, is how abruptly they just began enforcing a new rule (which is still not stated explicitly anywhere in their commerical guidelines btw). Say you ran a gun server for years now, investing thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours of time into it, having no issue whatsoever. Then one day completely out of the blue you are forced to change it all. Who's to say we won't see more of these abrupt "new directives" in the future, where they get even more limiting, on what we can and can't do?

Yeah, the problem isn't just the gun part, it's how this came out of nowhere and they're forcing everyone to do this almost instantly. What's stopping them from banning other stuff whenever they please? It started with the chat report and bans from any multiplayer and it seems that it'll just keep getting worse. Edit: but somehow p2w servers and gambling is completely fine (even though it's against their EULA).
@joshuavidrine889
@joshuavidrine889 Жыл бұрын

The most frustrating part is that they're almost certainly going to ignore the backlash and just wait for it to blow over. They've definitely shown a lack of interest in the Java Edition, and calling it "Java Edition" in general has always made it feel less than it is. Its not an "edition," it IS Minecraft. There will come a day that Java stops receiving support due to having limited return on investment. That is the day Minecraft is GG for thousands of players. I have played both bedrock and Java and java is still far superior, if they were ever to cut support people will just keep playing java and making mods of bedrock updates.
@robonator2945
@robonator2945 Жыл бұрын
yeah they're going to do that, too bad they're idiots. Java may not be what most players buy, but it's what convinces other people to buy it. Java is the superiour version (aside from a very select few edge cases) and as a result, it's what most people play if they're going to make videos on the game. (and let's not even bring up modding here because that is a WHOLE other can of worms) Most people who play a LOT of minecraft, play on Java because it's just better in a lot of very noticable ways. And those people make content, which then convinces other people to buy the game on bedrock and play more casually. Java *_is_* their marketing. The game being free and modifiable is what made it blow up. Are we just all going to forget that shit like Yoglabs and Jaffa Cake factory blew the fuck up when they first came out? Those were modded java playthroughs. The recent re-emergence with pewdiepie and dream reignited it just enough to make Mojang think vanilla is where their dedicated playerbase actually lies. What they didn't realize though, is that it was mostly novelty that made those things explode. Most people hadn't played or seen minecraft in ages, so re-experiencing it with pewdiepie or watching dream use features they didn't even know about was novel and unique; it was never going to keep people engaged long-term.
@86pp73
@86pp73 Жыл бұрын
Most definitely. The current rate of updates reflects how low-priority having to support Java Edition is. I'd say the day Bedrock starts receiving "Limited-time update exclusivity" is right around the corner now, likely planned after this blows up, enabling Mojang to act like they're behaving reactively to the Java community going against them. Then they can slowly widen the technical void between the two editions over the course of several updates and leave Java in the past. If anyone asks any questions, Mojang can always say "Working with two separate codebases is a lot of effort, we need to prioritise one to get updates out more than once a year!" But as will always be pointed out, Java is the original game and its community built Minecraft into the industry titan it is today. Sure, Mojang and Microsoft can herd all the kids into playing in the walled garden of Bedrock Edition, but I doubt all the communities that gathered around Java will be able to survive there, or want to come along at all. Which does raise several questions about the future of Minecraft - Will it be able to survive without the vast ocean of fan-made content that Java brings in? How will the community respond to this? Will the legion of experienced modders and sever operators band together to maintain Java Edition? If so, how will Mojang and Microsoft respond to that? (Also, looking back on it, Notch being a total bellend was probably a good excuse for Mojang to start distancing themselves from Java)

In a game where you can burn kittens in lava, build automated livestock butchering machines, and feed parrots chocolate chip cookies (the most heinous offense), texturing items into guns doesn't seem that bad. I think they should implement server-side content warnings, for things such as violence, profanity, gore, etc. that players have to confirm to view the first time they connect to a server. This could even be controlled with parental settings.

@purplecomposition485
@purplecomposition485 Жыл бұрын
The "parrots getting killed by cookies" thing was a patch after someone pointed out that chocolate was bad for parrots. It was made after Mojang tried to make a reference to cracker eating and, if anything, is there to show kids NOT to do that. In reply to the sea turtle egg destruction feature, that's the trampling feature that most mobs have and, while a kid can choose to do that just the same as actively feeding parrots cookies, it's there to encourage people to protect the eggs and people crushing them themselves is more so just general interactivity of a system already in place.
@colinbrinkley
@colinbrinkley Жыл бұрын
@@purplecomposition485 I understand the parrots and the cookies. I was around when they first made that change, and honestly the joke of it is just fun to bring up. As for the sea turtles, it comes down to the principal of choice and intention. Yes, the choice is always there to do it, but it's up to the player as to their intentions as to *why* they did it. Was it on purpose? Or an accident? A strange gray-area where the intended mechanic can be bent into a sadistic method of fun, like putting your Sims into a swimming pool and removing the ladder. But... doesn't that also sound similar for players *choosing* to participate on a server that features firearms?

I agree, for the most part. From a libertarian perspective, yes, it is their privately owned game, they have complete private ownership... however... their TOS and EULA are enforced publicly. If you violate their TOS you can get a cease and desist, which can be followed up using the public judicial system. I agree with the private ownership argument, and hell I'd support it, but if Mojang is to hide behind that as an excuse, they should also have to invalidate the legal validity of their own TOS and EULA, since that ISN'T privately enforced; it's publicly enforced.

That was the early warning sign as to where they were going. Anytime a creator feels a need to hit you with "trigger warning", unless whatever is coming next is deliberately designed to be borderline psychotic (like an extreme horror game), it's basically admitting that they have more concern for sympathies than experience. And by my observations, that concern *_always_* leads to hand holding policy changes later on.
