I realize im late to comment on this, but a couple of ideas, one, use a pair of V blocks to rotate the mandrel in instead of the flat piece you demonstrated with, V block will keep it from rolling off and it will remain centered. The other idea is when you are sanding on the flat surface with the wet paper, instead of going back and forth make figure 8's and rotate the piece 1/4, then figure 8, rotate 1/4 turn. Get the idea! Its how we use to lap pressure seals and its a good way to maintain even sanding. Good video, thank you.

A note for all to pay attention to. Sheets on the abalone inlay are often used for things like fishing rods. Try getting some of the super thin stuff from Mud Hole. They are extra flexible, and adhesive backed for easy application. Other than that, the issue with it being "too brittle" to bend was because you may not have heated it up sufficiently.

Dear g.c. hi where did u buy your lathe? Love your vids Choctawman
@gregoryhalye8907
@gregoryhalye8907 4 жыл бұрын
@@monroeboone4667 Lathes are generally quite expensive, not only for the tool itself but the attachments, accessories and tools required to make the most of your investment. That having been said, you do NOT need a lathe just to try some things out when just starting. An electric drill with a keyless chuck can be obtained pretty cheaply. Buy one with a cord, not a battery powered one. Get zip ties so you can secure the trigger in the on position. In your chosen work space, you can set up your tool and your available tools. Use your drill to make a hole as centered as you can in a length of square stock pine or light hardwood. Insert a piece of round stock steel or aluminum into the hole that has been roughed up, along with a generous amount of epoxy or superglue, and allow to set. Secure your drill in an upright position, using padded jaws on a vice, or clamp it to your workstation. Inset the round metal stock in the drill, with the wood. Using a zip tie, fix the drill to the on position, and use sandpaper backed by a flat board to keep the cone smooth. Use this to create a narrow tapered cone which will be your ring mandrel. Progress through the grits til you reach 400 grit and then seal and finish the taper with CA and apply wax after finish sanding. (Car wax - prevents superglue from sticking so much) You can now use this wooden mandrel in the drill as a makeshift lathe by simply jamb fitting your ring on the mandrel. You can help keep it secured by applying a few layers of painter's tape on the narrow side of the mandrel to keep the ring in place while you are working. Harbor Freight has a cheap corded drill for around 13 dollars, you can easily run it for 10 minutes at a time at medium high speed for this type of purpose. Allow it to cool between uses for better longevity. This setup is simple and effective for merely sanding or rough filing of small items and mini woodturbines. The use of a tool rest or lathe tools is not required. Use a slow speed while sanding or applying a finish or sealer like superglue, fast speed for polishing and final buffing or waxing.

Lovely result! I was wondering about pickling the ring with the mixed metal edge bands attached - how come you don't end up with the silver being copper plated - or would that only happen if there was iron in the pickle pot?
@GomeowCreations
@GomeowCreations 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that only happens if you have steel/iron in the pickle pot. You can also get copper on your brass after heating it and leaving it in the pickle for too long. It will start to eat/remove the zinc from it so it will just leave the copper behind. To fix that you can just sand it a little or use a mix of hydrogen peroxide with white vinegar 1:1 This will eat the top layer of copper, just don't leave it in too long because it will just keep eating the copper.

This video was so helpful. You really went into detail on all the small things other videos seem to take for granted. I have experience making wood pens and have decent skills with CA finishes, so making a ring seems like a great next project. I have a Sherline lathe so all I need to do is get setup for silver soldering. I guess I can cut my teeth on a stainless inlay blank to get started. Pricing out silver, I think I will buy copper first and practice with that until I feel confident enough to risk some better material. When using stone inlay, will it dull a carbide insert very quickly to level it off or should I use something else for that?
@GomeowCreations
@GomeowCreations 3 жыл бұрын
It's really going to depend on your stone that your are using to be honest. For the most part I use softer stones and they down seem to do anything to the tooling.

I suggest you measure the inside if the sizer instead of the outside the mandrel. You'll be far more accurate measuring the ID of a cylinder than the OD of taper. You can see in the video it was .83 when you took it off and .75 when you clamped it up so I'm guessing it doesnt matter that much. 0.6 is your material thickness and you need to double it because you are working with diameter. 1.2 was what you needed. 3.159 x 20.95 for the OD.
@HouseholdDog
@HouseholdDog 4 жыл бұрын
You can fix up the concave you get with the ring. Just move the ring slightly down the mandrel and hit the ring with your mallet dead on. It should straighten up the concave an save you some filing.

@GomeowCreations

Not all silver solder is the same. if it has a flux cord it is not meant to be used on jewelry, it is only 3% silver and the silver solder that you want to use is 75% silver. also that stuff melts at 400 degrees and the silver solder you want to use melts at 1200 degrees.😁👍

I'm at the point wondering if i should add more abalone pieces and CA glue and hope it all will turn clear? Or should I attempt to clean all glue and inlay out and start over? This is my first attempt in working with inlay/glue. Any suggestions?
@GomeowCreations
@GomeowCreations 4 жыл бұрын
Sorry this is a very late reply but I have had this happen and this is what I did. I cut out all of the white spots and refilled them with the ca glue. One other time this didn't help and there was too much to take out so I cut out everything and started over. I sucks but some times this happens but you will learn from it. Oh and try using very thin layers of glue to make sure that is all drys at the same time.

Am I correct that the glue over the shell will polish so that the glue looks clear and shiny? I'm doing a couple tiny pendant pieces and the glue has dried to a matte but I haven't filed or sanded yet.

This is going to be the weirdest question ever probably, but with cuts like this, why use jeweler's saw, which is basically a very fine bladed coping saw, rather than a scroll saw with a metal blade and a guide or something similar? I get not using snips, which would bend and warp your metal, but I feel like there's small scale power tools that could make the lines straighter and for basic shapes, done quicker. Also, with the use of the lathe, it seems weird to use the cutter when a pierce of sandpaper on a block would suffice. I should say, my questions come from more of a woodworking background, so it's similar tools on a much smaller scale and I'm just curious. I know there's got to be a rationale behind the tool usage.

@GomeowCreations Hi! Just wanted you to know that actually the length is calculated pi x inner diameter + 2 x thickness. So: 3.14 x 19.75 + 2x 0.6 = 63.215. Well, that's one way to do it, but you can't multiply the thickness with pi, and you have to add 2x the thickness (as its 2 times in the circle), or it will give you false outcome. 😊
