Moldboard plowing new ground! Today we are back at Saul’s place again, and he’s taking care of some fall tillage before winter sets in. He’s using the mighty G706 Minneapolis Moline pulling an Oliver four bottom plow. I hope you all enjoy the video, thanks for watching!

Great video, good thing we fell off the back of the plow, didn't get buried. LOL My great grandfather plowed garden with a 2 bottom plow pulled by his 1950s Ford golden jubilee. We would always gather worms for fishing after he plowed. Great memories from long ago.

It's good to see young guys with an appreciation for older equipment and carrying on with farming. I left the farm when I was out of high school and off the college. That was over 50 years ago. Part of me wishes I had never left.

I fully agree...there is nothing like watching a moldboard plow turning over the soil. Plowing with dad's 1950 WD Allis and a 2-14s John Deere plow is how it all started. I wish I could jump on that rig again and make a few rounds. Thanks for having Saul on your program.

Try replacing the fuel filters again try additives that will clean and lubricant the fuel injectors and the pump. The EPA continues it's march to ruin the diesel engine and have removed sulfur which was the primary lubricant for fuel system components.

Sounds just like Grandpa working it when he was alive. He had Minneapolis Moline like that one and a 4 bottom plow. He lived in eastern WI so he had some hills too. That grunting Minnie Mo had a unique sound in its own way. I guess all tractors come with there unique sounds.

Now that brings back memories. Not all good or bad. I've spent many many hours out in the fields getting them plowed down. We used to say a poor job of plowing in the fall was better than a great job in the spring. We would run a 930 Case and an JD 4020 pulling 4-18 Melroe plows. It would take us 3 weeks to plow down 400 acres of corn stalks in good conditions.

When I bought my farm in '77 it came with a MM U i believe it was, narrow front and steered like a lumber truck. But we used it for hauling manure, raking hay and grinding feed. In an emergency we pulled a plow with 2-18's. "the good old days" lol

Beautiful tractors, beautiful gothic arch dairy barn. I love plowing, I spend more time looking back than forward. Watching the dirt turn is mesmerizing. That said, his plow is not adjusted correctly, the frame should be parallel with the ground both ways. I know not much about Oliver plows but drop "That Oliver Guy Chris Losey" a not on KZfaq, he knows everything about them, I mean everything. He literally grew up at an Oliver dealership. Great farm, Sol is a lucky man. Best regards from Indiana.

Awesome video I have put lots of hours on them old Minneapolis Moline tractors like that I had a G705 diesel and 5 mf97s mine were all 2 wheel drive I was plowing once in the spring time with the exact same Oliver plow and I hooked on a rock with the 4th bottom back and it was sliding under the tractor the rock was so huge it slid the rock along ways until I spun out and had to lift the plow and back up to get off of the rock. I sawed lumber with them too for thousands of hours the last one I used to saw lumber would take 5 gallons of fuel per hour I maxed the injector pump out and set the injector pressure up some and advanced the timing I figured that I was getting 150 horsepower out of it on the pto shaft I was direct coupled to the sawmill.

You shown a rare bird around our part of the world. Moline is a rare tractor, in our part of the country it was John Deere, Allis Chalmers, IH, Case, Massys, in bigger tractors of lots of Fords. Also I don’t recall seeing many pull type moldboard plows used, mostly 2 and 3 bottom 3 point hitch plows. Of course any tillage in my area of NC is virtual non existent except small garden type. No till is the way it’s done

We still won't bored a lot here on our place in Western PA but mostly in the spring for the spring crops now we will mold board for speltz and wheat in the fall the only real fall tillage we do is we will chop and then disc in our corn stalks which we have about 10 acres of them left to do here as soon as we get some either dry or frozen weather in the next few days. I do agree with you there's nothing like moldboarding and there's nothing like watching it done the only thing more fun that's being in the tractor seat on the plows it's turning the dirt
@jvin248

There's a good visceral reaction to seeing plowing like that. The smell of the soil as it rolls over in waves is always mesmerizing. I like all of it. I remember being three or four, hardly taller than my father's knees, on the deck of an IH 806 pulling a five bottom plow that hooked onto an old stump lifting the front end of that tractor (with it's full rack of suitcase weights) off the ground and up into the sky -- and I'm hanging on for all I could. However, ... I've switched over to no-till regen ag principles. When I see farmers getting the same yield with zero chemical and no tillage inputs the goal becomes clear. I can plow for fun or I can make a profit. Yesterday I saw an old AC dealer video from the 1950s up-selling larger tractors to spend less seat time plowing plus the _five_ disk passes they recommended -- and I was thinking that changing production processes saves even more time and fuel than that -- so I guessed my thinking has really changed. Plowing is still mesmerizing and takes me back.

New Subscriber and my only question is Where are the Seagulls. I've never seen a freshly plowed field where the seagulls weren't after the plowed up grubs. My Grandfather started his first farm when he was 16 years old in 1903 and farmed till he had a bad stroke at the ripe old age of 81. He only had big work horses till 1951 I believe when he bought a brand new Farmall M tractor. He had a two or three bottom plow and disc and drag. He owned 4 farms all together but two of them were mostly maple tree forest used for logging, maple syrup production and firewood. I never knew any man that could work so hard and enjoy life as much as he did with his 6 children and countless Grandchildren. His favorite saying to me as a boy was, "The World owes you a living Boy but you have to go out and work for it"
