One thing I really like about this channel is just how much the whole family gets involved in the videos, a lot of times like a son will start a channel and film his dad and family some, but it is still very much centered on the person that made the channel. Here, it seems like around half the videos have Aaron in them, and the others George goes out with a camera or I have even seen Owen or Mason filming that day, each person brings a slightly different perspective and style to it all. Farm videos are often going to be the same types of tasks, and over time we have seen it all, but the different perspectives and personalities really does keep it a little more fresh.

Here in Denmark we plow A LOT. and we mainly use reversible plows because its a lot easier, a lot faster and more efficient, which i think is what you are looking for as well, having the ability to turn around and go back down the same furrow you came, plus you basically eliminate dead furrows. reversible plows if you get setup right with the right type of moldboards, sheers, coulters, edges, points etc. they can burrow trash really good and not only from corn, but grass fields and other crops as well, so if you wanna go down that road, i would highly recommend it.

I can still see my dad trying to back one of those plows into the shed for the winter 50 years ago... and getting very frustrated lol!

With a reversible plough (or rollover plough as you Americans like to call them), there are several advantages. You don't need to waste time marking out your field, there is no empty runs, which waste fuel, as you can run back down along side the work you've just done, also most reversibles for a tractor the size of yours, will be mounted on the three point hitch, so you'll get the added advantage of mechanical wieght transfer, since the top link is always pushing forward and down on the tractor, when the plough is in work. Would suggest a four furrow reversible as a maximum for your size tractor, since the tractor has to have the hydraulic capacity to be able to lift it in the first place, without the front end of the tractor going skyward. Some front end wieghts on the tractor would also be beneficial, in this instance. Bear in mind when lifting a reversible out of the ground, that you are effectively lifting almost two ploughs weight, owing to the double set of mouldboards and coulters, plus skimmers, if fitted. Generally speaking, tractors can pull more furrows than they can lift, hence the development of semi mounted ploughs, but their disadvantages are that unless you use an intermediate coupler, like that available for the MF 86 for example, you won't get the advantage of the mechanical weight transfer through the top link, for the reasons stated previously. MF tractors using the MF 86 semi mounted plough usually used it with the intermediate coupler, as not only did it give the mechanical wieght transfer mentioned previously, but also actuated the draught control mechanism, which was sensed through the top link attachment point on the tractor. Semi mounted ploughs are ideal for use with tractors that have lower link sensing, where draught control is concerned, but unless an intermediate frame is attached to the three point, rather than simply attaching the plough directly to the lower links only, the mechanical advantage of wieght transfer does not occur, hence tractors not having the intermediate weight transfer frame fitted, will invariably experience more wheel slip, than a tractor fitted with it. Some food for thought - hope it helps. Incidentally, your main plough frame looks suspiciously the same as the MF 86 semi mount, only the tail wheel actuation and front attachment details differ on your plough.

It's fun to watch the 1066 do some field work. I put a canopy on my 966 . I think they look great, and I was very happy with it. I put what they call the " old man step " on the left side. While they may not look cool it sure made getting on and off a lot easier. I never regretted it.

Nice combination of tractor and plow. We plow under sod on occasion, but primarily use a coulter chisel for our primary tillage. Back in the day good plowmen were known for straight furrows and well-laid out plow lands where I grew up.

Nice Tractor to boot

I have a 966 Black stripe IH, which is the same tractor without the turbo. Yes a somewhat awkward tractor compared with modern tractors. You climb through the door, then go down the hallway to the seat 😂. I always had the doors of all summer too but I was glad to have them back by November. I chopped corn and hay with my IH tractor, and pulled a 5/18 MF 880 auto reset plough, usually ploughing between 100-150 acres each year. And I would have to change plough shears every 2 years. Shines and Landslides would last longer, and only change as needed. These days I no longer plough. I have moved to a hi-speed tillage piece that cuts and mulches cornstalks while throwing some dirt on top. Next spring one maybe two passes with the same tillage piece, and the field is a nice seed bed for soybeans or small grains. I travel 7-8 mph doing 16’ a pass with my CaseIH 8920. Uses much less fuel than conventional tillage and maintains plenty of trash on top for winter to prevent erosion. I used to believe as you said that it was necessary to bury the trash. I have found that leaving some of the trash on the surface, the crop residue actually decomposes faster as it is exposed to the sun , wind and rain as well gets plenty of Oxygen to aid in microbial decomposition. Burying the trash limits the amount of Oxygen, and slows decomposition. There was nothing I liked better than seeing a nice freshly ploughed field, and watching the dirt rolling over and covering the trash. No more do I do that, and we have some heavy clay soils too. Not saying what you are doing is wrong, just takes more time and fuel to get the same results

My plowing is limited down to planting hay seedings and teff grass. Everything else is notill through covers. We had blue clay on farm I worked on. Back then we plowed everything with a 7040 Allis Chalmers and a 2000 5/18 Allis Chalmers plow. We had 1000 lbs on the front of the tractor but when you hit that gumbo the front of the tractor was hanging a couple of feet in the air.

Thanks for sharing the video. Y'all are good farmers and I enjoy watching your channel. I'm 55 now and I still do a little bit of farming but I'm not a full time farmer anymore. I grew up on IH tractors and worked on a big dairy with John Deere tractors. Like both but I still have red ones not that I haven't had green ones. Beautiful soil and I really appreciate your explanations for everything you do. I still believe in plowing every so many years. It's an art and if you do it right it makes working it down easier in the spring. The roll over plows work good. I'm in Virginia and I have heavy soil but a college buddy who is in South East Virginia in sandy land has said the reverse plows work good for him. I love my 1066 it is fender and rops with the top. Do you get the Red power magazine? There's quite a few places to get the brackets and fenders,rops, and steps that look like IH ones. Nice looking tractor and plow. Nice job too. Take care.

Dam nice job of plowing , lots of work. Hopefully you can find a roll over plow . In your case save you a bunch of time. Sure do love old school plowing. I don't think you can beat it especially every two or three years.

I for one like the IH cabs, a lot of spring field work in the evenings were cold same goes for fall plowing. The IH 550 plow is a very good and easy pulling plow.

We pulled a 550 with a clod buster rake with an 856 on the high side of 2nd. Great combination.

Love the 1066 plowing put a lot of hours on one of them from the mid 70s to the 90s that plow wouldnt last a hour around our limestone had to have the automatic reset plows here great video found memories

We ran a 1086 with a 6 bottom plow. I love the sound of an international singing pulling a plow.

I grew up with a 76 1066 just like that. We had a 4-18 plow which was usually undersized for it

I couldn’t get one farmer to understand that always moldboard plowing a field in the same direction (say, clockwise) would eventually raise the center of the field. But I sure do like how neat you make the edges instead of just being a slob about it. 🙂 I’m surprised you don’t have the plowing dual on there for actually *plowing*.

Ear corn looks great! I heard 'tip back' is due to high summer heat when the corn is pollinating, so that may be what happened last year. The rye+oats looks good, I run 2-3bu/ac rate of rye for cover; based on the Wisconsin Research testing (I'm in Mich); which if you are putting down 100lbs you're in the same ballpark. Their research targeted planting prior to Sep 15th for optimal results where you get the most biomass at spring planting time. We had six weeks of drought right during germination period so we were delayed overall but I saw (and I tested all ways from disking prior, which was a weedy disaster) that planting into standing rye and letting the crop sprout where I then flattened the rye as the best way. There's a five thousand acre farmer in Iowa supplying big cereal factories organic grain that uses only rye and corn/soybean no-till, so it works at massive scale. The standing rye protects against weeds until you flatten it into ground cover the crop is sprouting through and has a sprinting start against the weeds. The standing rye brings up moisture from several feet down plus hosts more dew capture. Corn I strip tilled (because I only have an old shoe planter) but I had beans I just broadcast into the standing rye where they just sat on the soil surface, no seed treatments either, and they sprouted. Then when flattened the weeds are shaded again and the crop gets a compost mat under it to cool the soil. Every gardener is chasing compost but when you go to field scale you can never find enough compost cheap enough unless you use rye. I did find the random oat variety I planted in an experiment turned out to be a short variety. Rye has had less 'engineering' and seems to retain height that we need for this type of application.

I have a JD 4200 roll over plow. 4/18 bottom unit. It's heavy, and really rocks you when you flip it. Also needs regular greasing during the day so it doesn't hang up mid flip. Both a Ford TW20 and JD 7800 walked away with it, but they both shook hard on the flip. I believe a Long (JD bought theirs from Long) switch plow would be a good one. My plow doesn't have coulters, and did fine in heavy residue. I think the switch plows would,too.

In our area the old timers plowed round and round for years. Every field has a "plow hump" along the fences

My folks used a 550 IH plow or equivalent of what was available in late 1960s for the five bottom that matched the 806 my father bought as a set. It was a great setup. Nice seeing yours operating. The last few years before my father passed away he found two or three parts plows at auction (for cheap). My brother has all that now. Anymore, it seems you need a plow to bust up sod/hay fields but after getting into grains you can use covers and no till. I'm still transitioning and experimenting/learning as I go on it.

A set of cover boards would help with the trast build up on each bottom. And fresh land slides would make that plow almost like new again. Great video and i have found that the roll over plow to have move advantages because of weight to stay in the ground on dryer years, my clearance in trash and better time management on head lands and turn around time

My dad pulled a semi mount reversible ovurum 5 furrow set at 12 or 14 inches with our 6310L tractor no problem I'm fairly certain the 6200L could have done it is being lent out at the moment and has since been changed to a 16 inch bottom when i do some ploughing with it again i am expecting it to make the 6310 work a lot harder We have fairly heavy clay loam soils with lots of big rocks so the hydroulic reset is a huge plus

All States Ag Parts has the steps fenders and canopy for the Ole 1066. They have a Wisconsin location somewhere. As far as the roll over plow both IH and Case IH made them, now Arts Way makes the same one. They are on Tractorhouse some models are 125,145,165,140, and possibly 150. We have a 4 bottom roll over and our 1466 loves it.

my dad did not farm but inherited the family farm. He rented the land out but we had a bunch of pasture ground he wanted to farm again. I don't think the renter was to happy as he had to plow it up. It had been in pasture for at least 20 years with lots of rocks. Renter had a 1086 with a 6 bottom(with springs). He spent more time doing wheely's(sp) than driving all 4 tires and even had a dual on the outside. It was comical to me, but again, hard on equipment for the return.

I have 5 bottom rollover its really heavy. John deere still has parts for it parts guy said everyone does switch plow now because it's so heavy

I would not buy a John Deere switch plow on your ground. Works great in our sandy ground, but that clay you got, you wont like it. Lemken reversible plows are cadillacs, but $$$$, a 4 bottom plow slatted bottoms is going to be edging $60,000 without options. Me personally, I'd stick to IH/Case IH 145 infurrow/165 onland plows just for parts availability. I run a Massey 57 and left hand parts are starting to become an issue to get. You can still get IH left hand 18" bottom parts relatively easily. My suggestion, if you really want a rollover plow, is to have a little patience and watch Tractorhouse or Fastline for an IH/Case IH 145 infurrow with hydraulic reset and coulters. Hydraulic reset will have more underbeam clearance than a rigid or toggle trip and only available on the 145, and the infurrow plows were the only ones available with coulters. I'd say your 7810 ought to be able to handle a 5 bottom without too much issue, albeit 4 will be far more comfortable to pull.

We never plowed one way we plowed in sections the next time you plow it you reverse the direction so the dirt always went back in the same place.

So before you all had your John Deere tractors was the 1066 the main work horse on your farm?

International makes the best plows there is. Only thing that compares is Oliver or white. Don't get rid of that one

My Dad tried to roll over plow when kid it actually took all the hydraulics and ripped them out of 14000 Bill to fix the tractor and they are extremely actually put fluid in the front plus fully weighted in just to keep the front

Can't speak for anyone else but don't worry about cutting explanation short on my account. I'm going in the next couple weeks to look at a 2 bottom plow and I think 5 foot disc that've been sitting at my in-laws for 20 years with a tree growing up through the disc for my little 1980's Kubota I just got. My Father-in-law has 5 acres and an old WD-45 and tried working it back then and said the plow kept trying to go deeper and the front end came up with the right wheel down in the rut and he thought it was going over and shut it down. Said he asked around and it was like no one wanted to share the information about how to run it so he never tried again, just runs brush hog over since then. I'm only on an acre but I think I can get 1/4 acre of sweet sorghum in next spring to try making syrup for fall.
