The final frontier, if we can thoroughly understand this, we can help to figure out how to stop the auto destruct mechanisms in cells, also known as aging and death.

why is the hydroxyl group of carbon 3 on the left hand side whereas the other hydroxyl groups are on the right?
@OmegaHunter08

because otherwise it wouldn't be glucose. It would have different properties (like a lower melting point), be a different monosacharide, with a different name. . You may not need it, you probabl already figured it out yourself, but here is a link ( read the first 2 comments) : chemistry.stackexchange.com/questions/57927/why-is-it-important-that-glucose-s-third-oh-group-points-to-the-left glucose has 4 chiral carbon atoms and 2 that are not( the 1st and 6th). the position of the hydrogen atom or hydroxyl group on those 2 is unimportant (i think), while on the other 4 the position does matter. At least thats what I have learned.

I have a question why the aldehyde group of glucose reacts only with last chiral carbon hydroxy group, not others?
@kalpeshkumarnakrani1663
@kalpeshkumarnakrani1663 6 жыл бұрын
1st carbon has an option to react with either 4th or 5th carbon. it can not react with 2nd and 3rd carbon because 2nd and 3rd carbon are too much near to the 1st carbon so there can be a stearic hinderance to glucose carbon skeleton for the sharp bend. whereas on 4th and 5th position, there is no need to take sharp turn so such bonding is preferred. if c1 makes bonds with c4 carbon it is glucofuranose and if c1 reacts with c5 it is glucopyranose.

but i think could have been better if you just have said carbon at fifth position and hydroxyl grp attached to it get in reaction with carbon at first position. hydrogen of that fifth positioned hydroxyl grp get along with oxygen of carbonyl and oxygen of that fifth positioned carbon gets stretched upto making bond with carbonyl carbon. as simple as that. why to trip over words?

He means if there was that hydrogen bonded to that oxygen, the oxygen would have a positive charge. But since the oxygen has let go off that hydrogen so it doesn't have a positive charge.
