The Bavarian Festival in Frankenmuth, Michigan is a long-established festival which in 2019 was in its 61st year. It was founded by William "TIny" Zehnder who also founded the Bavarian Inn Lodge. He played an important role in the development of Frankenmuth as a popular tourist destination and with promoting the Bavarian architectural theme that was adopted by the local business community. It was an act of genius to bring back some traditional European architecture to modern buildings to give them more character and soul. This is an excellent example for other cities and towns to follow if they want to revive and make their communities more interesting and livable. It is the opposite of the soulless socialist Bauhaus architectural style which is typified by depressing square or rectangular block style buildings with no style or decor that stresses bare functionality and uniformity. Traditional styles like Victorian and Habsburg era Austrian architecture are functional but have a lot of decor, visual effect and interest - Augenspass - eye candy. A lot of major landmarks that have lasted for over a century have been built in those styles. Bauhaus can be considered temporary disposable architecture that nobody really likes or would ever want to preserve. The ancient Greeks and Romans also placed a lot of emphasis on visual effect in their architecture, richly decorating every surface area with sophisticated sculptures, stone carvings and frescoes. William Zehnder showed that it is possible to join the traditional styles to modern buildings, and that many people appreciate and enjoy it. Frankenmuth is a very nice, clean and beautiful town with a lot of character and charm, that reminds a person of being in the German or Swiss Alps.
There is a lot of authentic German culture in Frankenmuth, with real Weissbier (natural wheat beer with the nutritious yeast still in it), bratwurst and much more at the festivals and also a great annual Oktoberfest. It offers more value than far away places like the Caribbean where many people still go. There are a lot of interesting local vacation places in the Great Lakes region.

Frankenmuth, known as "Michigan's little Bavaria" was founded in 1845 by Lutheran immigrants and missionaries from Franconia. This is the northern part of Bavaria - the land of the Franks - Frankenland in German. It is a region that has a lot of very beautiful old towns and cities, with midieval architecture and many old half timbered Fachwerk houses - known as Tudor style in English.
In Canada there is also an Oktoberfest in Kitchener, formerly Berlin, Ontario. It is a city that maintains strong German roots and culture, founded by Mennonite immigrants from Pennsylvania in 1803 www.oktoberfest.ca/
