@@mollyesanbornI just want to try and be the voice of reason/expectation resetting for Disco Volante, because even as a die hard fan of experimental and avant-garde, that album is boring and just doesn’t bring the magic like the Mr Bungle albums that bookend it, or many other experimental/noise albums you could pursue. Going California first and then back to Disco is gonna be a slog imo. And yes, I’m aware of how often that is hailed as Mike Patton’s best, but I think it was a lot of peoples introduction to that degree of experimental music which is probably why it is so historically beloved. Who knows, you might end up loving it as much as everybody else, but I think the hype surrounding it sets the wrong expectation.

About that sound at the end of Pink Cigarette, if you'll look into the lyrics, at the end he starts to repeat phrases like "There's just five hours left until you find me dead, There's just four hours left until you find me dead..." etc with that beeping sound at the background. I guess it represents the life support machine, and right after the "There's one more hour and then you will find me dead" this sound becomes static, which I think represents the end of his life at that moment. Since this song is about the heartbreak and the end of relationship and his sorrow regarding it, I believe it really makes sence.

Ah California, one of those albums I’ve literally forced upon everyone I know. Trey Spruance, Mike Patton & Trevor Dunn are all such talented composers who simultaneously don’t take themselves too seriously, which in turn makes Mr Bungle feel so free and elastic. You can definitely hear the influence they had on not just the Nu Metal scene but on all the avant-garde metal that came after them (Zeal & Ardor, Igorrr, Tub Ring, Diablo Swing etc). It does make me wish that they’d revive the project but the 3 albums we got are all great in their own way to keep the band’s name alive. Plus all the stuff they’ve done on their own is worth checking out anyway: Lovage, Peeping Tom, Secret Chiefs 3 and so on

That's a really great point you made about how fun and relaxed their music is. Not taking themselves too seriously really gives them the freedom to get extremely creative and experimental on their albums, which is a huge reason why I love this band.
@TheWeezll
@TheWeezll 9 ай бұрын
They have revived it (sorta), they rerecorded The Raging Wrath of The Easter Bunny demo a couple years ago, which they made in high school, which I also assume you might know about. Also, from what I've seen there is a chance they're creating new material or rerecording another old demo, Bar posted a video to his instagram story around a week and a half ago with everyone in some sort of studio recording stuff.
@SomerankeroffYT
@SomerankeroffYT 9 ай бұрын
@@TheWeezllI never really count that because like you said it’s a re-recording of the demos. As cool as it was to hear Lombardo & Scott on a Mr Bungle album for me the typical thrash sound the album has doesn’t resonate in the same way.

Sometimes it looks like you have access to my playlist 😅. Jokes aside, thanks for this reaction, this album holds a special place in my heart, I wish more people knew about it and could also appreciate the creative genius of Mike and the rest of the guys in the band. Absolutely timeless classic. P.S. You just have to listen to Lovage, this is another one of Mike Patton's collaborations with other musicians. There's only one album, but it's just a masterpiece, a great combination of trip-hop, lounge and soul, this album is just soaked in romance and flirting. I think you will definitely like it.

I will finish my comment by encouraging you to continue listening to Mastodon's discography ; I've seen your review of their first record and I'm pretty sure you're gonna like even more their more recent records. Less "pure" metal, more prog, more fusion of styles, more melody; still the same energy and technical prowess.

If you read the lyrics to "Pink Cigarette" the ending will make more sense. It's essentially the narrator "flatlining." There's a countdown: "There's just five hours left until you'll find me dead." "There's just four hours left until you'll find me dead." Etc. It counts down to "one hour left" and then the next time around, you get the flatlining noise.

Disco Volante is the most unhinged that Mr. Bungle ever was. It's hard for me to even say which Mr. Bungle album is my favorite because they all go for similar overall ideas but the sounds they use to achieve those ideas are completely different on each one.

'California' makes me long for more of the experimental Bungle as they have turned more to their original thrash roots with the current tour , band, and rerecording of early demo's. 'Goodbye Sober Days' is one of my favorite tracks the band has done. I never got the band/Patton's side of things but have had a friend mention the song does kind of match what goes on in their head and makes them turn to certain substances. I always kind of felt like the album was kind of a reflection of period of time in California. With the opening track capturing a feel of the California vibe and how it turned and kind of exploded with the last track kind of capturing the feeling of the Manson family unleashing.

Can't wait for your review on Disco Volante & your opinion on the song "Ma Meeshka Mow Skwoz" (probably my favorite Bungle song, puts my brain in a cartoon!) But please remember that the "Secret Song" (Spy) plays between track 3 "Carry Stress in the Jaw" and track 4 "Desert Search for Techno Allah" (the Secret Song is the 2nd half of track 3) Then I hope you'll check out the Western/Native American themed album "Anonymous" from Tomahawk The Cartoon themed album that is track listed for every day in the month of April 2005 "Suspended Animation" from Fantômas The 1 track album based on Patton's fear of being awake while under surgery, "Delirium Cordia" also from Fantômas And an album based on a war between Vocals and Turntables that is Absolutely Amazing but very few people know of/review/talk about/react to, "General Patton vs The X-Ecutioners" from Mike Patton & The X-Ecutioners. @@mollyesanborn Oh and just to let you know, there IS more Mr. Bungle!!! The albums called "The Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny" and "The Night THEY Came Home" were released just a few years ago, and are more or less the same album. "The Night THEY Came Home" (the one I have) has almost all of the songs from "The Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny" (missing only the 1st song, "Grizzly Adams" which is a short instrumental) and has 4 new songs added on! But they're NOT like the other albums. It's more of a throwback to the band's original sound & a re-recording from the first Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny Demo. A lot more Thrash Metal than Experimental. Also, it's not all of the original band members. This version of Mr. Bungle is Mike Patton on Vocals (of course) Trevor Dunn on Bass Trey Spruance on Lead Guitar Adding Dave Lombardo (from Slayer & Fantômas) on Drums And Scott Ian (from Anthrax) on Rhythm Guitar So maybe after you react to "Disco Volante" you could also check out "The Night THEY Came Home" for all the Metalheads & Patton fans! (but PRETTY PLEASE WITH SUGAR ON TOP could you do the "General Patton vs The X-Ecutioners" before that? More people need to know about this album!!!)

Hey Molly, have you ever had the band Hella recommended? Their 1st album "Hold Your Horse Is" or more recently "Tripper" are absolutely nuts! Zach Hill is one of the most insane drummers in the world. Ridiculous math rock ;)

Pure genius...every Mr Bungle album was different, California was a perfect genre masher...all hail Patton. You must react to Tomahawk, another Patton project.

The old timey sounds in Robots remind me of cartoons, which means in large part it reminds me of Raymond Scott. If you feel like going down a weird rabbit hole of music, check out his stuff, among other things he provided the score to 120+ Looney Tunes.

Ooh okay, thanks for the suggestion! I know what you mean about sounding like a cartoon, Mr. Bungle's music definitely has that quality to it. It's really quite fun.

If you haven’t checked out “Disco Volante”, they’re 2nd album, do it soon. It’ll blow your mind…it sounds like a mixture of Loony Tunes Carl Stalling Project along with Middle Eastern flair with a bit of Death Metal to trip u out. I can’t wait to hear you react to that one 😎

I know it’s been a few months since you did this, but just to let you know the mad chanting near the end of Goodbye Sober Day is actually a take on a scene in a documentary film called Baraka. Check it out it’s actually really cool.

Going back to track two. In the late 90s "Ska Swing and retro swing" music was kinda popular. The sound comes from 30s-40s "Swing Jazz". Fun music to listen to btw. Good ear.

Oh thanks for the info! Yeah that swing jazz sound is very prominent on this record, I love that they utilized it so much in their style. Like you said it makes for some fun listening.

Hey Molly I recommend watching the unofficial music videos to Retrovertigo and Pink Cigarette. They were made by a fan named Tkan I think. They’re pretty good. Mr. Bungle doesn’t have many music videos. In fact I think they only had one, up until 2020.
