Could you explain what exactly dm means. Like I read it as the derivative of mass, but I think it actual means a small part of the mass like a integral of mass. Am I right in that?

Whole lot better than my textbook, those images in the middle are complex but I assume this is simply the explanation of those. Thanks for making it easily comprehensible to someone who is learning calculus though physics lol

I like to calculate my integrals by making up a variable for density (I use the greek letter rho) and set it equal to either linear, area or volumetric mass density. I can replace dm with rho*dx or rho*dA or rho*dV, and when the constants come out of the integral, usually I will back substitute with M/L or whatever value is applicable. In volumetric problems, sometimes it's advantageous to just not back substitute rho at the end, and leave it alone.
