Excellent point for sure. It seems that it is because of the complex and time consuming appeals process as mandated by law. It's not up to the prisons. So it's the law that has to change and it depends on the political party to want change.

Determining the exact percentage of false death sentences in the U.S. is challenging due to the complexity of legal cases and the difficulty in proving innocence after a conviction. However, studies and reports provide some estimates based on identified exonerations. A comprehensive study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in 2014 estimated that about 4.1% of death row inmates were likely innocent. This estimate is derived from an analysis of exonerations and other factors that indicate wrongful convictions in capital cases . This percentage represents cases where new evidence, such as DNA testing, recantation of witness testimony, or proof of prosecutorial misconduct, has led to the exoneration of individuals who were previously sentenced to death. However, this figure might be conservative, as not all wrongful convictions are discovered or proven.

Hmmm it sounds like he has to serve 15 years first til they can set a date of execution? Well he has awhile to wait until his judgement day. I think anyone on death row should get 1 year prison sentence where they stick them in a cell with pictures of the victims they killed. Don't let them out of their cell. Remind them daily of the pain they caused. After one year then execute them.
@colonelkurtz2269
@colonelkurtz2269 Ай бұрын
His case is automatically reviewed by the Florida Supreme Court. He can also waive or file other appeals up to the US Supreme Court. His other sentences don't impact or change his death sentence. He might be executed before he even finishes one. They are also consecutive so they must be served one at a time. This ensures he stays in prison until all the sentences are served. Death Row in Florida is single cell 24-7. There is no contact or yard.

This is a very sad case..a Deputy was murdered in the line of Duty..stay off drugs kids. Good people do bad things when on drugs & on the run..even Men/Woman who have served for their Country and did amazing things along the way..drugs send them into a different path that they probably wouldn't have chosen to do..these crimes they/he..are now found Guilty of. Kids have lost their father..both with the Depty and now this man Patrick too and beloved family members have lost their loved ones..forever in the case of this Deputy. I feel sad for the victims family & also the members of Patricks..who never wanted their family member to be now sentenced to death. If the guy (or girl) is plainly guilty of something as horrible as something like this , then he needs to be taken care of as quickly as possible. Period... @herseem
@herseem 20 күн бұрын
Just to remind you, there are a whole bunch of reasons why people can be found guilty, even confessing, who are later found to be factually innocent. Some interviewing techniques will produce confessions from innocent people because they can't cope with the process. prosecutors behave badly, police behave badly, witnesses have other agendas, foresnic science is sometimes overturned or improved. For example, the test for dynamite can be triggered by the cellulose from a fresh set of playing cards. That featured in a terrorism case in the UK where the Sun newspaper had the headline, "Hang them", and about 15 years later, "Guilidford 4 Freed'. A man was recently freed from being in prison after being there for 17 years for rape after the review board supposed to investigate potential miscarriages of justice refused to re-examine some DNA samples. When they finally did, they found the DNA was for someone completely different, and that fatally undermined his conviction.

@pierreverschueren8382 Texas had repeat violent offender on death row, if I remember correctly serving one sentence for one death, and one short sentence - appealed, successful in reducing it, problem was he was identified as a serial killer, in multiple states, but with the death sentence all others cases just stopped. It was the short sentence that kept him in prison - I believe it was Michigan that was able to get the evidence to charge him and have him transferred before his release. I watched a show a few years back. But overall it is to prevent release if the conviction is overturned, reduced or dismissed.
