Core memory; my lunch was taken because my parents could put more money in our account and we didn't quite qualify for free. The box lunch was a single slice of cheese between white bread and some goldfish crackers. I was the only one who had one, bit I think my feelings were hurt more because they talked to me like it was my fault there was no money And then the janitor called me over, and had tears in his eyes as he gave me five dollars and said "Here you go sweetie, anything to see that smile again." I was so happy, I'm sure I thanked him but I can't remember if I did or not and it kills me to not remember. There was a lot of stuff that happened at home around that time and that little bit of kindness still makes me tear up when I think about it. There were other times I went hungry growing up, there were times I had to bring bags of pennies and the lunch lady just took it with a look that told me she was going to take my word there was enough money, and it was the best she could do

In my elementary school, milk cost $0.00 and the little tubs of cereal cost $0.00, so you couldn't go hungry no matter what happened.

I always hated how our lunch lady’s would not only take the tray away from you but they would announce that you were out of money. It probably only happened to me like 30ish times but what was worse is they would always tell you whenever you we’re almost out of money, some of them would be really nice about it and say it quietly but everyone knows what’s happening when a lunch lady is whispering to you, a lot of them would just say it loudly though. Our no money lunches weren’t too bad but, it’s was always either those really bad ham and cheddar subs or peanut butter and honey whole wheat sandwiches(when I was younger they had turkey and cheddar whole wheat sandwiches and those were good) but like when the honey and peanut butter mixed it created this incredibly weird honeycomb type texture. To most kids it was inedible and people would feel bad if you got that one, I didn’t mind the peanut butter honey mix but they always used whole wheat bread and I absolutely despised whole wheat bread when I was a kid it always made me really nauseous, I still don’t like it but I can tolerate it.

As a lunch lady I can say that I take pride in making the lunches as edible as possible but as the county I work for insists that the kids don’t want the homemade and healthy meals so we have been serving frozen crap thrown onto a sheet pan for years now. If you don’t like the lunches please take it to your local schools board/ county representatives please! Us lunch ladies are sick of serving frozen garbage. It saves on labor costs but at what cost to the children?

My dad was the cook for the school the entire time my brother and I were in school, he always tried so hard to make the best things he could with what he got but every year he tells me there are more restrictions on what kids can eat, we were always very lucky and our school was very progressive about school lunch, we get used to get local game, they made it a requirement to serve fruits and veggies, some kids were kinda snobby about it cause it’s “school lunch” but it really wasn’t bad at all. Didn't have enough money to buy lunch foods to pack. Occasionally, in high school, I'd get $5 to walk down to this place with snacks (we had open campus) and bought me an arizona drink and a can of pringles. Saved the coins to eventually turn in and spend it on more dinner food. I would have loved this.

But it is nice to hear that some of my friend have free lunch because of their families income(my family's is right outside the limit so I can't get free lunch, so most of the time I just don't eat).

I was never able to eat school lunch because of celiac disease. I would be physically incapable of eating pretty much anything I got from the school, and eating gluten for years when you have celiac can cause a lot of health issues. In other words, if I was unlucky enough, school lunch theoretically could’ve killed me.

Our school lunch, aside from Pizza, is all home made in house. Volunteers come in daily and make taco salad, pancakes, chicken quisadilla, spaghetti, taco dip, grilled cheese, chicken nuggets & mashed potatoes, walking tacos, sloppy joes, or mac & cheese. Each meal is $5 and comes with a choice of side (usually baby carrots, an apple or an orange) and a container of milk. We are so blessed to have the program, my kids order pizza every Monday and then 1-2 other meals per week, depending on the choices. I only have to pack once or twice a week. They dislike Fridays choices, so they get a lunchable that day, and other days a jam sandwich with a fruit and treat side, or a bowl of cereal and milk.

In my school, if you didnt have money for food you were given a cheese sandwich. Not a grilled cheese, just a slice of plastic cheese and a hamburger bun. It was usually cold and you were only a fruit and milk alongside it. Nothing else. There were free lunch programs, but they were strict and a lot of kids got assed out because they just barely didnt meet the parameters to get free hot lunch. Its really sad cause thats not what you feed growing kids.

I hated it when the lunch ladies would take food away from people who couldn't afford it, I'd always pay for their food if I was in line. I loved seeing their faces when the lunch lady who just snatched their food placed it in front of them after sitting down empty-handed. My school was in the UK and used to hand out £5 vouchers once a week to kids on Pupil Premium. No one else could get them. I usually paid for lunches in summer, as I'd be the one in the friend group to buy everyone some water, or if one of my friends didn't have money on their student card.

We had cheese sandwiches, an apple or banana (we didn'tget to pick), and white milk. We were not allowed to go across the street to get lunch. If they found out we had money in our pocket, they would take it and say, "we need your account number to settle your debt." After which we would still be given only the cheese sandwich, the apple or banana, and the white milk, even when we had $5 over in our account. All because they couldn't trust us to settle our debts in a timely manner.

I couldn’t eat the bread because half the time I was biting into dough, couldn’t eat the meat because it was never fully cooked, i lived off the premade sides and deserts which I had to pay my own money for the deserts. That’s if I could eat because most days the look of the food made me so sick I couldn’t. That was highschool, I remember having cheese sandwiches for lunch in elementary school often bc my mom either didn’t have money or forgot to give me money. It was a slice of cold American cheese on white bread with a milk and some mayo if you want..

My elementary school had Miss Asbra's lunch money lending service. If you didn't have money you go and talk to her. She gave you a ticket the ticket got you lunch. She would call your parents and tell them. And if for some reason you still couldn't pay your lunch was covered by a unnamed older gentleman who came to all the school paying off all lunch debts once a month. He passed when I was in 11th grade and left money to the city to create a endowment to cover lunch debt. The endowment says the creator of the fund tried to have school meals be free for every child in the country regardless of income during his time in government but failed so supporting as many school systems in creating a fund to prevent kids from going hungry at school is what he wanted his legacy to be.

My school didn't offer in school lunches until highschool. And they weren't cheap either (I don't remember the price, only that my family couldn't afford for me to eat them, and the few times I did they sucked) if I didn't bring a lunch, I typically went hungry until dinner (if I was lucky I might have a granola bar from some of the teachers...and they were never enough)

why are people hating on FEEDING CHILDREN. these kids are clearly getting a meal of things they'll eat, with a goal towards nutrition. but even if there weren't bell peppers or nuts or anything like that... everything has a time and place. lunch is to give kids the energy they need to finish the day-if little kiddo won't eat veggies without a parent there, thats whatdinner is for! better for the kid to have protein to fill them up and keep them full, and carbs for a quick brain boost immediately. by all means, if your kid will pack and eat a perfectly balanced meal they should, but if they cant... they should still have something to eat. no child should be forced to go hungry. also, this applies to adults too. eating perfectly balanced and complete meals is fantastic and worth applauding, but if you cant make that happen... then eat something that isnt complete. leave out your vegetable if youre exhausted and cant make one. make instant ramen if thats all you can mamage (if you have it, soy sauce, hoi sin, and a little lime will level it up so much. pay off to effort ratio is great). you deserve to eat. Do it scared. Do it poorly. but do it.

"cant believe you do all this" Its fun and cute and a well balanced meal, i cant believe that person cant see the value in acts of kindness and love. Also from the look of this (only seen this one video) the hardest part looks like the sandwich doodle. This isnt a "doing all that" situation, its just packing a fun lunch! Im 27, my partner packs my lunch for work for me in the morning (i can do it myself it just makes them happy to surprise me) and its so much better than going out to eat at lunch. Today everyone was jealous of my star crunch they tossed in.

I used to be the kid that had to have the free and reduced lunch. My mom was a single mom working two jobs just so we could try to sustain at home. I was able to pack my own lunch by the time I made it to middle school, thank goodness, because the lunch quality declined significantly and I was a picky eater. Who else dipped their nuggets in that sorbet they’d give you? That was heaven as a kid. Got bullied for that when I switched schools. Someone went and told a teacher and the teacher asked me to stop. It made me incredibly self-conscious. Wish I told my parents about that then because they said they would’ve addressed the school about that.

Lunch at least in my state is free for public schools. I don’t know much about private schools. But if you want more lunch you have to pay. You only get 1 meal for breakfast and lunch. Also school lunch either tastes inedible or is inedible.

I packed my own lunch or walked to go get food (we had a 1 hour open campus lunch with atleast 3 restaurants near by) cause the food they served us was practically prison food. And I'm not joking. Everything came in these soggy cardboard/paper dishes sealed with plastic containing food you couldn't even recognize, and any of the unserved/uneaten ones would get sent to the local prison to feed the inmates. They were like TV dinners, but make them literal garbage. If we had microwaves available I probably could have had a better meal from an actual TV dinner. This is from a school in the capital city of my state. The only time I ate them was when I was homeless and didn't have a choice. I qualified for free lunch but some of my friends didn't so sometimes I'd use my lunch to get them food when their parents couldn't swing it, or I'd get someone extra if they were still hungry. You know the school system is fucked when your friend gets denied school lunch because they have an outstanding lunch balance and their parents can't afford to pay it.

School lunch can actually kill certain kids depending on their dietary. Mate needs because of how little schools care about it. Some of the food that is not suitable for grocery stores is given to schools as well. School lunch definitely can hurt.

at my school(high school), depending on your familys income, you can apply for free lunch or a discounted lunch but if your income is too much you dont get it, the regular lunch is like 2 dollars maybe, but the discounted lunch is 30 cents for breakfast and 40 cents for lunch

“Skool lunch” 😂 And yes school lunch is 3-5$ now and it is not great, can’t speak for others but, the last time I had school lunch the meet was green and cold and rubbery; I’m pretty sure that it was a bare minimum of what can legally be considered meat. Continue to pack your children’s lunch.

In my school, you have to pay £2.40 for a small portion of bad flavoured pasta or this mid Sunday dinner on a wednesday and a 330ml drink/small dessert. The only good thing we have is Chicken Katsu Curry and that's £2.00 and isn't part of the £2.40 meal deal so if they want a drink or dessert with it they need to pay an extra 75p.

same, but they don’t include drinks in meal deals, and the only meal deal is if you’re getting the meal of the day.

I remember when in California you used to have to pay for lunch, in elementary school I remember getting lunch and them saying I had no money left, they took my lunch and gave me a cold sandwich that was just 2 slices of bread and cheese in the middle, we had a share basket so I just placed the sandwich in there and grabbed whatever snacks I could form the share basket. Now that I’m in high school they’ve made it free ever since Covid for every school student, I think it’s the best I don’t have to worry if I’m going to go hungry or not

I qualified for free lunch. Signed up for everything turned in all the forms necessary, they gave me lunch the whole first week of highschool. Then something happened I'm not sure but they told me I owed money for lunch. Peanut butter sandwhcih would have been preferable to what I got which is nothing. My mom didn't have time to make us lunch or really money to spare for food. It took like a week or two before it got fixed. I dont think I ate much at all those two weeks. So quit criticizing this mom, I wish my mom had the time, money and energy to make me school lunches instead of literally having to starve. They're children, we don't need them to be tough. We need them to be loved.

I remember being in elementry school and having them tell me i could only have a cold cheese sandwhich. Thia was at the start of my Eating disorders, so being denied food while already struggling to eat sucked. So that lunch i just sat there and cried. I threw my glasses on the table ( breaking them ) and ill never forget that lonely empty feeling when everyone else sat away from me because of my lunch

My state has free lunch and it shows. One of our school lunches can be hotdog pizza. Which is unseasoned tomato sauce and some sort of yucky plastic cheese slapped on a cheap hotdog bun. It tastes like dogfood, if youre curious.

school lunch used to be okay where i'm from, but now it's absolutely disgusting. i have always qualified for free/reduced lunch (it's changed a couple times in my life), and that was okay because there were decent meals that i could eat with my dietary restrictions. now, school lunch is free, but most days i can't eat it because it'll make me sick, and the school doesn't take crohn's disease or lactose intolerance seriously. my mom used to make me lunch in middle school, but we don't have the time or money to do so anymore. this shit sucks.
