Mommy Thumb Treatment by Oakland Chiropractor -De Quervain's Tenosynovitis Treatment.
So you're spending hours with your baby, but starting to dread picking them up yet again because your thumb or your wrist are just killing you? You likely have a condition known as Mommy Thumb or Mommy's Thumb, which is a patriarchal and non-gender-inclusive way of saying that someone (generally who has given birth) has pain and inflammation of the soft tissues of their wrist and thumb. It's technically called De Quervain's Tenosynovitis.
Mommy thumb occurs when the two tendons around the base of your thumb become swollen. The swelling causes the sheaths (casings) covering the tendons to become inflamed. This puts pressure on nearby nerves which causes pain and numbness. It can cause severe levels of pain, but the good news is that if it's caught early, there are some non-surgical treatments for mommy thumb. Mommy thumb treatment includes ice, stretching, self-myofascial release, bracing, strengthening exercises, and posture and ergonomic changes.

This is one of the most comprehensive videos I’ve found on KZfaq. My little one is 6 weeks (10 pounds and counting!). I developed this pain on week three and felt motivated to be more proactive after hearing a friend had pain even seven months later! I’ve tried acupuncture instead of steroid injection but honestly, I would probably have been better off starting with this video! It’s great that you break down the different ways a patient can take action on their own. Thank you so much for being gender inclusive - huge plus!

Thank you for this beautifully rounded self-care video!!!! It brings instant relief! I'm a mom of a 3 month old suffering from colic pain and is being carried a lot. I've been dragging this condition for 2 months now, it finally feels better and I will be including this in my self care routine:)

Try picking up, carrying and have laying on your arm a 22kg/46lb Staffordshire bull terrier for nearly 7 years, my thumb, arm elbow and shoulder gives me problems, luckily these types of videos exist to help. Thanks doc 😊

I’m so happy to have found your video!! I’ve been fostering babies for almost a year now at 45 years old. Let me tell ya, it’s a lot easier in your 20’s! 🤣 I was having forearm pain about 7 months ago, and now it’s turned into intense hand/wrist/thumb pain with tension in my forearms, shoulders, pecks, and neck. I’ve always had tension, so in my mind, none of these things were connected. I had no idea what the actual problem was and none of the ice/heat/rest was helping. It’s so nice to know what to do now!!

Fantastic video! Best I've seen so far for mommy thumb. Thank you! When I do some of the forearm ball exercises, my hand/forearm tingles/feels numb and I feel some heat. Is that normal?

Thanks I'm glad you found it helpful! To answer your question, you may be putting pressure on a nerve and getting some temporary tingly/numb sensations... see if you can scoot the ball over half an inch to either direction to see if that clears things up. And of course if that doesn't change anything, please reach out to your doctor for an individual evaluation of your condition.

Sadly having this issue for 2,5 months now, been doing almost everything you show in the video but some neat tricks here and there, especially with the ball. Thank you for the video. Just one note, you shouldn't stress so much the picking your baby up, I (probably) got this from a combination of baby / gaming / volleyball and now can't get properly rid of this condition. Have been undergoing deep muscle / arm massages, stretching and everything. I don't want to have a cortizone / surgery. What do you personally think about prolotherapy? Would that be recommended? It's advertised as a good solution for this.

Yes, you are correct in that it is likely a combination of factors that add up to these types of repetitive strain injuries. Glad some of my tips were helpful and I hope you find some relief soon! I would check in with your primary care doctor or an orthopedic MD about the risks and benefits of prolotherapy, as that is out of my scope.
