momondo - Let's Open Our World

7 жыл бұрын

To celebrate diversity in the world we asked 67 people from all over the world to take a DNA test. It turns out that they have much more in common with other nationalities than they would ever have imagined. In this short film, you can join Karen on her emotional journey into who she really is.
Let’s Open Our World is an invitation to travel across boundaries, embrace our differences and open our world.
momondo believes that everybody should be able to travel the world, to meet other people, and experience other cultures and religions. Travel opens our minds: when we experience something different, we begin to see things differently.

To be 100% African after the history of colonization and rape in war etc. is a rather rare thing which explains her emotional reaction.

Ts s not really that rare. Especially taking into consideration she is East African. Also many Africans have high amounts of indigenous in them. Like a lot of Nigerians are purely africain same thing with Congolese. They did not enslave the people of those countries like how they did in the Americas. It was really different.

It's not rare at all there were only 6 tribes from west African taken in slavery to north America. 80% of all slaves taken came from Angola and they were taken to Brazil.

this whole goddamned video and this whole project are designed to prove to all those who cannot fathom the idea that we are family, who think that there are no Africans, no blacks, no whites, no turks or kurds, that we are all relatives. Your preferences are unimportant, she is not beautiful cause you think so or because she is black. If after watching this video your only opinion is that black people are better, or that black people are a different species, do, get counselling now and urgently. The beauty you see in her eyes comes from hundreds years of your and my and our thinking.It is called sadness, segregation. A woman like yourself should be more delicate, you can still learn. Men are hopeless.

Karen is beautiful: “I know who I am, East African.” One of the reasons I’ve been terrified of these tests...the history of slavery in my DNA as an African-American...it’s so painful. Karen touches me so much, because she’s so proud & the pain of the many wars in Africa during & post-colonialism. Bravo, Sister!

Tori Collins I get you. But there’s not such as thing like African American, Afro Brazilian, Afro Spanish. We are all African, we all como from the same place. Instead of thinking about slavery think and research about what existed before slavery. You need to know your History no the History that is to you by the people that enslaved your ancestors and left this big emotional hole in our lives. Research. Remember knowing your paste helps you understanding your future. You are so lucky to be in America because most information I have about me comes from our Heroes that died because the6 tried to open our eyes but our eyes still closed. Never be scared to find who you are, the DNA test won’t make any difference if you know the real History because we did not have border the borders we see today were put there and if you look at the African map same borders looks like they were traced with a ruler.

@whatthereview369

Tori, I understand how scary it can be. But we will just jump the gun (while still being sensitive and respectful about it) by saying that pretty much all African Americans who's family has been here in America since the 1800's or before that-- do have white/European in their mix. If just one African woman had a mixed child 200 or 300 years ago, that one child has created THOUSANDS of descendents today. And while it is quite true that before the 1960's and 1970's, black Americans mostly married and had children strictly within the black community (back in the day most cultures and races did the same with their own)-- there were MANY African women during the slavery times who ended up having a mixed child (through heart breaking events). Which means the TENS of thousands of descendents of those children have been constantly marrying and mixing with all the other black Americans over the last few centuries. So by today, all bloodlines have those genetics in the black community. I know some black Americans who took a vacation in Africa... They came back completely blown away at how much DARKER native African folk are, than most black Americans-- and the reason is because of that tiny bit of mix. So I would say you can definitely expect to see some European, even if only a small amount. I know that's very hard (and sad) to think about... But once you KNOW there's a 99% chance you do have a bit of European DNA, a test won't seem so daunting. But then you get the test, you can explore the mixes of African DNA you have! And even have some fun with it! Look up jewelry and clothing from those areas. Try wearing some of it sometimes, as a cultural pride expression. Or look up recipes for poplar dishes in those areas and try cooking them, to taste what your ancestors may have eaten. Study the history of those areas. Maybe try learning some of the language. Find some pretty relics from those countries online and decorate your home with them. It could be really fun to learn which parts of Africa your family hailed from, and to make their culture part of your life in honor of them. Now, as for that little bit of European DNA... We will acknowledge "the elephant in the room" and bluntly say that it was FORCED upon some poor African woman, back in slavery times. True. However, the man who did that horrible act... You certainly DON'T have to be proud of him at all. He was an asshole! But he had ancestors too. And those ancestors were just plain, ordinary, every day people with average lives. Further back, some had great accomplishments and others were likely nobles, even royalty! See, the "black death plague" in the 1300's killed off most of the poorer half of Europe. So atone point, there was nothing left but the richer half, nobles, royals-- and everyone alive today with European ancestors, came from them. So around the 1400's and 1300's in your European family tree, you will start seeing lots of nobility and royalty. So those lines can also be interesting. And again, while you are 100% justified in hating whatever asshole thought it was ok to assault a woman-- you can be proud of the GOOD Europeans you descended from, further back in your tree. I hope this helps.

Most of what she and her parents would have experienced wasn't from Europe, but their own Civil War and infighting.

+LivingAsLynn bullshit she's from Burundi and they were colonized by Belgium. Of all European countries that colonized Africa, Belgium was the worst. I'm from the Great Lake region and trust me those imbeciles destroyed that region until today. They divided people and made them fight each other. The Burundi situation is the same as the Rwandan genocide Where Belgians and French government financed the extremist and gave them weapons. Those civil war you are talking about were caused by fkin Europeans !

To be predominantly Ethiopia/Somalia, unless one of your parents is/was a cushite, it is impossible. And cushites are only found in Eritrea/North East Sudan/Somalia/Djibouti/Kenya/North Tanzania. If you dont have a parent from those mentionned area above, it is impossible and you need to tell the dna company to give you your money back.
