Monahans Sandhills State Park
Where can you surf without water? On a sea of sand near Odessa. Sliding down dunes is just some of the fun in the sun at the unique landscape of Monahans Sandhills State Park.

I have loved this park since my early childhood! It great that they have public restrooms and SHOWERS so you don't bring the sand home with you!

Family is from that region of Texas. Was able to take my kids , year back to experience & enjoy it.

This is a wonderful place. I'm especially impressed by the shinnery oaks (Quercus havardii) that grows here. There are stands of it in SE NM and a few areas of W OK, but Monahans is the place with the large dunes. A newly-recognized species of cicada (Megatibicen harenosus) was recently described from the shinnery oaks.

These dunes are great for sledding, particularly in the morning when it's cool or shortly after a rain.

I've camped there 2 times. Wear ear plugs for the jack pump in the distance and train that comes through at night.

Like White Sands except one will not be irradiated from fallout of nuclear tests...Well maybe some pollution from oil and fracking (but that's mostly at night and when it's raining.)

The sand is a different color here. The sand at White Sands is not actually sugar-white but a very light ivory, while that at Monahans is darker. White Sands doesn't have the shinnery oak, although other areas (more to the east) in New Mexico have it.
