Dubspot brings you a sneak peek at Native Instruments' newest software synthesizer, Monark: a re-creation of classic analog monosynths like the iconic Minimoog Model D.
Dubspot's Matt Cellitti has been working with Monark for awhile and made this sneak preview video for us giving a brief tour of how this synth is laid out and how to use it. He also demos some of the presets to give an idea of the kind of sounds this new/old instrument is capable of.

the user bank is to store the synths you create as well as your favorites from the presets.. If you notice, "Thriller" is all the way at the bottom when he's in the "Classics" bank.. So I think u can also drag and drop your favorite presets into the user bank to access them a little bit quicker.. :)

Actually, it depends on what you are after, Simon. DIVA is many older synths in a single box. The power of DIVA also lies in being able to mix and match modules from these various synths and being able to hand-on manipulate the voicing structure and use modifiers for modulation points, one can also mix/match MM feedback feature w those other synth mods. So it is -not- equal, but it does sound nice, at the very least, if you just want the Moogish qualities. You can also see the $ is right for D.

Hey Matt, small question. What does this synth bring that I cannot achieve with massive. Seeing it's rather basic/Moog layed out, all of which features are (I think) supported by a lot of VSTs, how does Monark differ itself? It seems, but correct me if I'm wrong, that the "analogue" part is ending at the similar to MiniMoog layout.

Sylenth is polyphonic while Monark is completely monophonic. I use both synths and both are in the top tier when it comes to sound quality/warmth. It all depends on what you're looking for. I just bought Monark yesterday and I'm blown away with how they came so close to emulating the Mini Moog. It even has all of the imperfections that old school synths use to have like voltage leaking and minor pitch error. It's hands down the closest MM VST out there and the best monophonic VST imo.

You probably haven't heard how deep Monark gets with Reaktor's DSP technology. This is quite a detailed approach to synth design in the digital world. If anything, one of the creators of Monark, Vadim Zavalishin isn't just making analog emulations, he's really meticulous about it. Check out The Art of VA Filter Design from the NI website. It's a feast for some of us digital-analog lovers. Of course, I'd love the real analog synth, but you know... creativity shouldn't be limited to authenticity.

In regards to some of the criticism of this synth, let's not forget that something like Monark has always been missing from the "Komplete" bundles over the years, and therefore, it is a great, and essential, edition to what Komplete offers. Regardless of whether or not NI should be making old emulations that have been done before, it makes total sense for the greater product offering.

I think I know why you say this. You may have a point. People forget how fun those old beasts are, but what I really enjoy about these modeled synths are the new options and ease of integration into projects. I don't really view them as replacements for the synths they are modeled after. I just view them as new synths altogether. I own/enjoy hw and sw. I simply enjoy sound manipulation, but nothing replaces the hands-on feel and response of those dusty dinosaurs...like my Juno-60

Massive is more of a Wavetable synth and has a ton of modulation options. It is so much faster to dial up a sound from scratch in Monark and it just sounds fatter and sharper immediately. I would have to do way more tweaking in Massive to achieve similar sounds.
@MattCellittiMusicTutorials
@MattCellittiMusicTutorials 11 жыл бұрын
agreed! It baffles me that someone is not trying to find a way to replicate some of these forward-thinking modules in a proper software environment. It won't ever replace a Eurorack module, but it would be new and exciting to try it out in a good software representation.
@MattCellittiMusicTutorials
@MattCellittiMusicTutorials 11 жыл бұрын
DSP does not imply "hardware". The goal of DSP is usually to measure, filter and/or compress continuous real-world analog signals and this is what NI was referring to in regards to building complex oscillators and filters in Monark to mimic real life analog circuitry.

Hey Anusideral- sometimes space becomes an issue in life. I can't exactly fit all of my analogue gear into a tiny college dorm; so if I can find decent emulations to replace a few of my synths I don't see what the big deal is. Sure, true analogue can't be entirely emulated digitally (hence why I'll be keeping my MS-20), but sometimes things like cost or space factor into wether or not you can use a hardware instrument.

Waves makes great effects, however they are quite expensive and out of the price range for a lot of people. These effects being included in K9 Ult is a big deal because it really rounds out the offering giving the customer truly necessary production tools in addition to all the synths

Everything he was demonstrating sounded pretty damn awesome to me. I'm a guitarist but I do have a good ear and I don't really care about the authenticity as long as the end result gets you 99% of the way there. Its the same with guitar amp/effects modelling. Some guys are tube snobs and others look at amp modelling as a useful tool for folks that don't have the space or the money for 60+ amplifiers. The same apply to analog synths.
