I got to meet and have dinner with him when he did a drum clinic at the shop where I taught. The crew from the shop, Doug Smith who was the Pearl rep at the time. The most incredible drummer I ever witnessed - even after seeing Donati and Minneman in clinic. Mike was the nicest guy, and he was chatting with me most of the time. He's so relatable, funny, kind, witty, and gregarious. Somewhere the owners of the shop have a picture of Mike Mangini together in Waterford, MI! Two dudes the same height and black hair!

man i'll miss you Mike, you brought drumming to a new level in DT in your time there, deceptively complex drumming that wasn't complex for showing off but rather just blended in so well with the other instruments. Stuff that might have sounded so smooth and easy until you think about it and then it blows your mind. Best wishes onwards mate.

What he needs next is to evolve the ring of drums into the drum ball, like the hamster ball. Surrounded by drums at every imaginable angle, in a drum kit that is built in a geodesic sphere, that can be rolled around on the stage, with him strapped securely into the seat and able to play while the ball is rolling. Bonus points if he can drive the ball at the same time.

From what I've seen of Mangini from live DT videos on KZfaq, I'm not the biggest fan, but this is pretty good. The guy's an utter freak of nature, skill-wise (that's a compliment). He is nearly on Buddy Rich's level in terms of speed and technique, even if he lacks musicality and dynamics for me.

Mostly because he's constantly compared to Mike Portnoy (who IS a fantastic drummer...), who has the advantage that he was in the band before Mangini, so Mangini also "fights" against the "in the past, everything was better"-faction of fans...
