The Khwarezmian Prince (Whose name I can't be assed to spell), really deserves a bit more sympathy. He saw his nation all but obliterated, and he was the last remnant of an Empire he desperately tried to keep alive. In the end, he got assassinated, after leading his troops from India to Anatolia. It's a fascinating story, really.

Sibutai was one hell of a warrior! Intelligent and brutal scary combination.

Subutai was the greatest general who ever lived. He created military fronts by coordinating multiple armies at once as they invaded foreign lands. This was at a time when armies fought individually and established frontiers with spaced out fortifications (or natural barriers). They couldn't fathom a wave of highly mobile attackers that came from everywhere, and so Subutai succeeded in overwhelming his enemies. This feat would not again be duplicated until the 20th century with German tank warfare. Subutai was hundreds of years ahead of his time

Main reasons why Monogols succeeded in conquering so much land: 1. Good organization of the army 2. Competent leaders 3. Divided opponents And last and most important 4. There envoy were constantly killed! 😁

I appreciate this video detailing the military brilliance of Genghis Khan and the Mongol empire. This really opens up your mind from the western POV's of the mongols seeing them as only blood thirsty barbarians. The Romans with its historical greatness and some overglorified commanders never achieved what the Mongols achieved. The Roman empire who existed for 400 years never achieved what the Mongols did in 25 years.

This such a great documentary. I'd love to see a video comparing empires from the past. I especially find it so fascinating how different empires chose to control the territory they won.

Subutai has to be one of the greatest war generals In history of mankind’s. Truly a remarkable individual. He Never lost in a life full of battles. He also had an ability to win battles he had no business of winning. The Mongol Empire disintegrated after Genghis bc of internal conflicts. Nothing else could have done them in. Even so they have forever changed the course of the world history. I can not imagine had Genghis lived another 15 years. The Mongol Empire has to be the most underrated Empire in history in all aspects of ground breaking changes from warfare to economic concepts.

For those debating that the mongols we're almost invincible let me explained you their defeats: 1.The first real serious defeat that really shake the commanding chain of the mongols was produced by Mordvin Finns at the Battle of Samara Bend 1227. Since this defeat the mongols started to use military advisors. •Lesson learned: Do not follow an enemy retreat inside the woods. 2.The Khwarazmians under the leader ship of Jalal ad-Din, similarly defeated the mongols and even multiple times on different battlefields. •Lesson learned: If the enemy general is too good, assassinated him first. 3.The Poles under Mieszko the Fat or Miezko the Butcher, defeat the mongols at tumen in the battle of Raciborz 1241. •Lesson not learned: Knights are actually a tough and well trained enemy unit, especially when they get to close combat. 4.Both the battles of Legnica 1241 and the battle of Mohi 1241, appear to actually have been a real close call. They could have end up in mongolian victory if it wasn't because the mongol advisors protest against some decisions made by General Tenmugue. •Lesson not learned: It is the generalship which decides, not the troops nor the advisors. 5.Sultan Qutuz of Egypt being outnumbered 5 to 1 defeated the mongolians generals Kitbugha and Ghedbungo at the battle of ‘Ain Jalyut 1260. •Lesson learned: The mongols are not invincible, specially if they need water. 6.The Japanese defeated the Mongols on two invasions, 1274 and 1281, Tsushima and the island of Iki were a massacred for the samurai but in mainland Japan things change for the mongols, with only one wave of invaders the mongols underestimate how this samurai figures fight. After this defeat the mongols acknowledge that the japanese were tougher than what they thought specially in naval warfare. •Lesson not learned: Being an expert on light cavalry warfare does not make you an expert on naval warfare, and always check out the weather report before you go crossing the Tsushima Strait. 7.The retake of Tsushima 1274, two weeks after the mongolian invasion, Samurai Takezaki Suenaga was send by the Shogun administration to retake the Tsushima island, after scouts report that because of the fury of Kamikaze a few mongolians ships damage by the storm have been force to be station there. He was send with 6,000 Ashigaru (foot soldiers), 200 Kyudoka (archers) and 100 Samurai, After arriving the mongol general Natarqiromwa wich had 9,000 survival soldiers notice the fleet coming their way and prepare a place to face them, unfortunately for the mongols and general Natarqiromwa they were entirely wipe out taking with them 2,000 japanese ashigaru and 7 samurai. •Lesson not learned: Don't face a samurai army straight head on without any back up or artillery. 8.The Vietnamese defeated the mongols on three occassions but not in direct warfare. As we know the kingdom of Vietnam fall pretty quick. But the guerrilla annahilated the mongols. •Lesson learned: Do not f*ck with the Vietnamese, they are experts on guerrilla operations since the beginning of time. 9.The Poles defeated the mongols fair and square in the invasion of 1286. •Lesson learned: Make sure that your units use their shield when attack by archers and never go head on against a Knight calvary unit. 10.The Hungarians defeated the mongols in 1285-1286 campaign, The mongol general Nogai was too eager to conquer Hungary for the golden horde but general Talabuga wanted the invasion to go on an easy phase, They both argue and separate each other's army. The entire waves that general Nogai send of mongolians soldiers were mostly eradicate by the hungarians, after this general Talabuga forces try to use a different tactics unfortunately it didn't work. •Lesson learned: Together we stand, divide we fall. 11.And finally the Russians lead by prince Dimitri in the battle and siege of Kulikovo 1386 manage to defeat brutally the mongols. •Lesson not learned: If you are not equip to fight in winter, don't fight at all. So yes, they were defeated.

Being famous for feint retreats has the added benefit of the enemy becoming reluctant to pursue the retreating army, when they would inflict most damage. So even in defeat not all was lost.

Meat-eating Mongols were probably a huge factor when Genghis Khan expanded his empire. Some historians discuss the fact that Mongol soldiers were superior to Chinese soldiers because the Mongols ate a diet with high-quality meat and fat, making them strong and healthy. The Chinese soldiers were fed mostly rice which made them weaker. Also, the Mongolian soldiers ate a lot of raw meat and did not have to prepare food during wartime, which also gave them an advantage on the battlefield.
