Regarding the point of how people feel the need to comment negatively on others to boost their self-esteem, it should be pointed out that it is our actions that matter, more than our thoughts. Even people who want to be empathetic will sometimes catch themselves thinking or feeling negatively about another person, e.g. you might watch a talkshow and think about person XYZ "my god, how stupid can a person be?!", especially if one is feeling low that day. The crucial thing is that these initial reactions are involuntary, so we can't blame ourselves for our initial impulses, but we can choose how and if to express them publically or even adress the person directly.

Really wonderful interview. It delves into relatively new terrain, we're just starting to grasp as a society. (Witness the latest round with Trevor Noah this week: 6 ugly tweets discovered out of thousands, over six years: Off with his head!) Really nice to hear such a thoughtful take on this. Monica turns out to have a real talent for interviewing, too.

Fuck me, the irony of some of the vile insults being hurled at her on a video regarding online shaming! Okay, so she was wrong to screw around with Big Willy, but she was an intern in her early twenties. Who hasn't fucked up and made dumb choices in their twenties? She still looks scarred by it, she's seems to almost be welling up when talking here, and apparently she's never been able to form a long term relationship because of her infamy. I hope she's getting a bit more happiness in her life nowadays.

One thing I have noticed: when I sometimes will post a comment, and mine are pretty positive - I may receive out of nowhere (from strangers)...a response like "you're nothing but a *&^%$$#!!". Often to something I said that was originally... really non controversial! Now, after recovering from such breathtaking, pointless cruelty from Net users I do not even know -- what does this hair trigger hate-spew actually say about our own feelings of presumed entitlement, to reply like that in the first place? Why is it assumed you can call someone names, and intentionally use the Net as a conduit for such purposes? Monica Lewinsky, Internet's 'Sista Courage' got it right. Nowadays, I rarely go on KZfaq anymore, I am so saddened by what I read in comment sections. Racial slurs, woman hating, wide spread homophobia, Islamo/xenophobia natch..and what I term a 'gun rack of the mind" mentality..Whoa, not just a compassion defecit. How about an intelligence defecit??

I think she knew the affair was wrong. But the way the republicans attempted to use the affair and her as means for impeachment and politics was far worse. Media didn't used to be such scandal chasing tabloid idiots. There was a time of well reasoned respectable journalism. It seems to have only gotten worse with the internet. Journalists have the responsibility to elevate the questions and information important to the public.

The only way to solve this problem is to raise peoples consciousness about stereotypes and shaming and make it "not okay" socially to do it. To a certain extent it's human nature but our society makes it SO much worse. We are all Jon Ronson and Monica Lewinsky.

I apologize if my learning is wrong. but we need to give it a better understanding, people are not perfect but there still a chance to make it better and we have to be happy if we know their pursuing to be better, because these people need help if we have a lot of experience were the one who make them better by providing solution. instead to put a shame on their face we make them back not for good this way.. if ever i got wrong just tell and suggest a better action because by revealing they past were the one put them in ungreat action. now lets stop the bad changing thought sometime when we realize they have a point , just accept it because you and i can be also the one who make it better,,
