While Steffi started dominating when Navratilova was in her early to mid 30's, very young Monica Seles dominated when Steffi was in her prime around 22-23. She still could win against Seles if everything was right, but normally it was a certain defeat. It was shocking to see Steffi Graf dissapear in 91 and 92. If not for the unfortunate stabbing incident, I don't see how Steffi could have coped with Seles that was going to her prime years, grew 2" in the process and had unmatched confidence. Seles was the first female true power player, hitting every ball hard. When she returned, she didn't grunt much, became American and her passion for the game just wasn't the same. Still good, made several grand slam finals and won another Australian Open, but not the best female player anymore. Can't blame her, after being booed at every arena as a young girl, getting stabbed, with Germany freeing the frustrated Steffi's fan, anyone would start questioning things. Real tennis fans were robbed of seeing true greatness, probably the best ever female player. Instead had to settle for Steffi Graf. Still phenomenal player, but we couldn't see the best.

In both Steffi and Monica's case, they both came to dominate when their main rival was burnt out. Steffi when Martina Navratilova was in the late 1980s, and Monica when Steffi was having a slump after her 87-89 run. You have said that it was "almost certain defeat" for Steffi unless "everything was right". I don't think anybody with a firm sense of reality would say that. Their head to head 90-93 was only 4-3 to Monica. Steffi's wins included the 1991 Hamburg final, where she was not in fact playing especially well (rather disproving your statement that "everything had to be right" for Steffi to win). And before you say I'm some kind of mad Steffi fan - I actually met her once at Eastbourne 1998 and found her to be quite unpleasant. My friends on the tournament staff also said she'd been a nightmare.

I enjoyed watch Monica Seles played and if it wasn't for the incident, I don't think Graff would have won that many grand slams. Remember, Seles was very young and beating Graff multiple times at a very young age. I like both Graff and Seles but Monica I enjoyed her competitiveness and power on the court. She achieved so much at a very early age and we all tennis fans got robbed after the incident to see how much more she could have achieved.

Though I admire Monica, what she said about Steffi has since been proven false. Steffi had tried several times to reach out to her but couldn't due to super tight security in the ensuing years. This was also corroborated by other players who tried to talk to Monica but couldn't for the same reasons.
@Alyssasrealm6 жыл бұрын
Nowadays people hardly can imagine that it was difficult at that time to connect without internet, mobile phone etc. Besides, Monica would not like to have anything to do with Germany after that event. And both of them were very concerned about their fathers, Monica's father being diagnosed cancer and Steffi's because of fiscal evasion and going to jail because of that. Both ladies had hard times.

I’m sure Steffi did reach out but then maybe she could have tried a bit harder too. I’m sure she regrets that now. At the same time, Monica would probably have found another reason to complain. She was always making little digs about Steffi.

Graf was never her friend-she took what her demented fan did as a blessing-Seles was cutting into her dominance & likely would have ended up with 20 plus slams if it had never happened & with her gone it meant Graf was the number one again with no real competition as Martina was in the twilight of her career.
@broncoguy48623 жыл бұрын
A lot of top players don't befriend their competition, so don't try and single Graf out when it's a fairly common practice. And your Seles-serving analysis of the player depth of that era comes off as the dismissive rants of another bitter Seles fan.

Although I love Monica Seles, we find out later that her perception of things weren't 100% accurate. It was later revealed that Steffi Graf did reach out to Monica numerous times but because of the tight security that resulted after the stabbing incident, none of Steffi's calls and messages ever got through. So, in reality, Steffi tried her best to reach out. I can, however, sympathize for Monica for feeling bad about not having heard from Steffi. It was clearly a sad case of two paths that could not converge.

If you were obviously not blood-thirsty, I would try talking to you. Reason and intellect are obviously not your fortes, susu. But, even so, what Monica wanted and what others want or need are theirs of choice. Its not cold. It was a MINUTE cut in her upper back. Nothing serious. Many athletes today get injured yet most athletes DON'T call them. Its life. Its normal. Had she been in extensive care for weeks and/or in serious condition, its certain more would have reached out to her. There is no fuzz nor anything like it about this matter. Get over it, or not, you brainless Monica fans.

I am just now catching up with the incidence. My conjecture was that first, the stabber must be a hired attacker aside from having reported as a fanatic fan of Steffi Graf. Who in the world had the ulterior motive to not only hurt but wanting Monica Seles' demise? My first guess was Steffi Graff's father. Why I say this? Graf's father had a wicked character: (1) he mismanaged Steffi's finances (2) he evaded paying taxes out of Steffi's earnings. (3) he had engaged with a prostitute and he was paying huge amount to cover up his sexual illicit and immoral lifestyle (3) he had to protect his cash cow (Steffi). Other thought I had was: the attacker was let free and was not put in jail--only put him under probation, and therefore, it must be a government doing or the crime was something political. Monica Seles said that the attacker tried to stab her twice; this was an evidence that the intent was deliberate -- purposeful; the attacker was not jailed -- think about it!
