Y'know something I just realized? 2016 is not only the Chinese Year of the Monkey, but it's ALSO Super Monkey Ball's 15th anniversary! And SEGA's not doing a darn thing about it! I heard of wasted potential, but seriously! SEGA! Do you care for the franchise or not?!

I wouldn't say Deluxe is the "ultimate must have version" of Monkey Ball. There were a number of problems that arose when porting it to Xbox and PS2, such as control stick sensitivity being off, missing sound effects like the ball rolling sound (seriously), and bad loading times on PS2 especially. The engine was built with the Gamecube controller in mind and it really shows. That's why it's so cheap. I wouldn't recommend getting Deluxe other than for seeing the 47 scrapped stages of SMB3.

I do find it sad that most game retrospectives are very US biased. This is why I welcome Dan and Larry's videos, there's more to them.

One VERY important note about Super Monkey Ball Deluxe: If you're gonna get it, get the Xbox version. I have the PS2 version and load times are absolutely abysmal. Loading in between levels isn't too terrible, as this is expected, but having to stop the game to load every time you move the cursor in the level select screen for story mode is really awful. Also in terms of gameplay for both versions, there are also some problems. All the Monkey Ball 2 levels play fine, but veterans may find that the Monkey Ball 1 levels are more difficult than they remember, and this is because Deluxe is based on the engine of 2, which is mostly the same, but has some slight differences in physics that can mess up your muscle memory if you played SMB1 a lot. And the most unfortunate thing, in my opinion, are those new levels which simply aren't that great, and also ruin the very careful difficulty curve created by the original titles. Before playing Deluxe, I had completely finished SMB2, all the way through Master Extra, and had managed to make it to level 40 or so of Expert in SMB1. It took me multiple game overs before I was able to finish BEGINNER in Deluxe, simply because one of the final levels (of which there are 40 in Deluxe) required traversing extremely long and extremely thin platforms, similar to a late stage Expert Mode level from the original. It was crazy and I was completely baffled, particularly because I didn't even find a single level of Advanced to be as hard as this one. Overall, I say do yourself a favor, and just buy Super Monkey Ball 1 and 2 for the Gamecube, the controller is better suited for it anyway.

Super Monkey Ball 3D was easily my least favorite of the series; the levels were so uninspired and easy; they usually took some shape, put walls around the edges, made a little maze inside, and called it good. It was honestly pretty boring. As for Banana Splitz, I agree that it's the best portable Monkey Ball; it's awesome! Great level design that stays true to the series. You were pretty hyped about the level editor though, so I should clear something up; all it is, you take a picture, and it randomly generates a level based on the picture you took. You don't get to individually place pieces or anything, so calling it a level editor isn't completely accurate. Great vid though, love this series!

I love this series and you also have a great intro I don't know why you shortened it, everybody seems to be doing that. Are you and everyone else getting sick of their on intros, Does saving an extra 10 seconds really make that big of a difference.

Bit disappointed you never mentioned the quality soundtracks in each Super Monkey Ball game. I'd say Step & Roll's soundtrack is one of its most interesting aspects, and is well worth checking out for those who haven't heard it.

I was born in 97 and playing this and animal crossing on game cube and tomb raider on PS1 were some of my earliest memories. Watching this footage brings back so many fuzzy memories.

Video was nicely researched, however I'm surprised to see that there was no mention of the AV dissolve prior to the release of Traveller's Tales' Adventure cockup. Nagoshi chose to put his energy into the Yakuza games, which meant less time and money being spent to develop and manage Monkey Ball (as well as a potential reason for the visual downgrade that began with Touch and Roll). Also notable is that the 47 additional stages in Deluxe are remnants of a cancelled SMB3, and all that AV was able to complete before being shafted by SEGA's higher-ups.

Loved this little respective/history of Monkey Ball! I honestly missed out on the entire series, I only recently picked up Super Monkey Ball for GC a few months ago due to watching GameSack play the minigames on their channel. They're so much fun!

In Monkey Ball, you don't tilt the stage, its one the biggest misconceptions of the series. You are actually manipulating gravity, which is why you can control Aiai while in the air. It looks like you are tilting the stage, but again thats just gravity.

Banana Blitz was not a bad game at all if you only looked at the single player. I really appreaciated the more plattformer approach of the levels and the motio controls were a perfect fit and did not get in the way because jmping could be done via A. What was bad about it was the multiplayer. It went from a few quality minigames for hundreds of hours of fun to a spam of 50 all very boring minigames.

I had the Ngage version, and it was slightly better than the GBA, sprites were replaced with polygons like the Bananas and other stuff floating around and it was higher resolution. I think the Ngage waaaaay underrated. I loved that phone.

Hey Dan when I tried ten years ago to get a games testing job at Sega they used Super Monkey Ball 2 as a test. Unfortunately a combination of me never having played the game before and no clear instructions as to my test made me fail. Haven't touched the series since.

I picked up Super Monkey Ball Deluxe for the Xbox from a car boot sale for £2 a few month's ago, £2 !!! Absolutely, totally, incredibly, most likely the best deal I have bought and added to my ever increasing gaming collection. Also, it was in mint condition, awesome !!!

I get that Super Monkey Ball: Adventure is a bad game, however I love it just for nostalgia reasons. I grew up with it, it was the first game I’ve ever beaten on my own. I always replay it at least twice a year. I know it’s a bad game, but I still love it.

Great video I love the series. However I belive you failed to actually mention where the problems started with the franchise. Going from Super Monkey Ball Deluxe SEGA took a casual approach to the series. This is why the hardcore fans dislike almost everything that came out after Banana blitz. The arcade challenge wasn't there and it was clearly targeted to a younger playerbase. Is it an ok plattformer still? Maybe but I do belive this is what eventually 'killed' the series..

I love the first two, but I lost interest when Sega never made a proper third entry and took the route of gimmicks and motion controls. I think a few of the post Gamecube titles, especially the Wii and Vita games, could've been contenders for a third game if they were expanded on, had proper analog control, and returned to the arcadey feel of the first two. Not to say these are bad, I just feel like some of the charm was lost with the change in artstyle and the addition of a few unnecessary gimmicks.

To be fair when I fired up a Sega game on the cube it didn't feel right but suoermonkey ball 2 is prob one of the best games ever made as it covered so many game types so was amazing value for money. How the hell they screwed up the Wii version after the cube versions was so good

Why does the top hat guy sound like he's got a well of saliva pooling in his mouth as he speaks? Like he is watching someone carve up a turkey as he reads his lines.

It's incorrect that "the stage tilt is what causes the ball to move", it's merely a visual effect that can be disabled in the rom's developer options while maintaining the rest of the motion mechanics. Besides, this doesn't make sense given you can roll up steep slopes while they aren't completely tilted downwards by the control stick.

I like banana blitz (SMBBB) 50 minigames, yanyan and doctor made it, it is a wii game.

No mention of the awesome soundtrack? These songs, so good... well at least, on the versions I had which were Super 2 on Gamecube and Deluxe on PS2. On a different note, those games really showed me how superior the Gamecube controller's analogue stick was to the PS2's. In most games it didn't matter that much but in these ones it really made a difference. Personally I found the main game entertaining enough and actually didn't play the minigames that much. I didn't like the jump mechanic whatsoever when I had a brief go with that game. They made the levels so much bigger and easier in order to accomodate it and... the game was just too loose, didn't have that "one more try" addictive puzzle feel to it any more, not nearly as much and the stages just didn't feel as unique either. A step backwards imo. With most games, a little extra innovation now and then can be an improvement. With this series I think they had the formula perfect out the gate and at least as far as the main game goes, messing with it only muddles it.

I love monkey ball 1 and 2 however I don't despise Adventure. I think it's fine. Plus it had a better art style than Banana Blitz.

The first Monkey Ball game I played was Super Monkey Ball 2 on GameCube, and as a kid, I SUCKED at it.

In monkey ball you are actually controlling the ball. The game tilts the level so it looks like the level is moving

Interesting story, when the gamecube was being launched Nintendo where worried about sales so dropped the price... Twice before release date. Went into electronics boutique at midnight on launch day and upon being told it was cheaper I had a decision to make. Save the money or get another game. Looking at the other games I saw a Sega game it had a monkey on it never heard of it but I love SEGA and I'm born in summer 1980 (year of the monkey) definitely the best game I bought my gamer tag is even AIAI_1980 now. Monkey race 3 player round friends on maximum laps so much fun.

In my opinion, after SMB2 the series went downhill like Sonic did. I remember as a little kid I got super monkey ball banana blitz and was absolutely turned off from the newer series. I hate the art style and the only challenge in the games were getting the damn gimicky controls to work right. All the levels were very samey and boring. And those mini games weren't good either. SMB suffers the same fate as Sonic. It's here to stay but we all get excited for a new release, realize it's shit, go silent, then repeat.

It's because AV was dissolved after Deluxe and the series was given to other development teams.

I don't know why people call it the death of SEGA... Right out of the gate when SEGA transitioned to 3rd party they utterly nailed it... Panzer Dragoon Orta, Super Monkey Ball, O.TO.GI, Outrun 2, Shinobi PS2, Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, Shenmue 2, Skies of Arcadia Legends, Jet Set Radio Future, Ecco, PSO Episode 1&2 and Virtua Fighter 4 to name a few utter beauts... General favour was totally against SEGA because of console fanboyism but they were pumping out pure gold...

I honestly couldn't stomach the way the series turned when they made the DS one. I absolutely couldn't stand the new visual style, and now it's another franchise that sadly just gets a release just for the new gimmicks. It's also what happened to Wario Ware, and it hurts my soul. That all being said, I really wish Monkey Ball would've had a release on the Dreamcast... All I really want now though is a port of Deluxe in HD and I'm good.
