For anyone outside of the UK you cannot underestimate how big and popular this TV series was back in the early 80s. I remember being in primary school and playing Monkey at break times with kids arguing over who was going to be who. Funnily, Tripitaka was always the favourite as she could control everyone with two fingers!!! I'll never lose this show, and now 40 odd years later I have the full boxset and still watch it.

There’s more to the world than the U.K. and it was popular in other places outside the U.K.
It's funny to me how one of the prettiest actresses in the entire series played a BOY priest. Masako Natsume really was lovely. RIP.

In the original studio recording, that scream was improvised by Steve Fox who played the bass. However, during the live performance, it was the drummer Tommy Snyder who took charge of becoming the "wild boy" of the band who boasted the biggest pair of lungs.

I'm Japanese. Masako Natsume was so beautiful and charming and ability actress. All Japanese people liked her. But she's gone to Gandhara when she's 27 years old. All of us cried, 「Hey,God. Too young....。」

Thank you for a lovely comment, she was so beautiful and charming, she made me fall in love with Japan
I love this show! I don't know about other countries but it was huge in Australia in the 80s. Just about every kid in our school watched it and we would act out the characters in the school yard. I don't think there was a single kid that didn't try to summon a pink cloud of their own. Good memories! The show is still great to this very day.

@Darren L Yeah I remember giving a few kids Karate chops in the playground at my school, I would do that every time, the next day after watching Monkey Magic, we all acted out the scene’s.

My childhood fave other than Blake's 7 in the UK. This was well done, lovely. Much respect to the Chinese culture and the awesome Japanese team involved. Love all of it, thanks for entertaining us all.

At least I know. and Im sure. Laugh at the same scene, excited in the same scene, moved by the same scene.Even if the country is different, feelings are the same. Sorry, I have only poor English. From a Japanese (๑•̀ㅂ•́)و✧

It was such a hit in Australia that they filmed the second season here. My Mum's such a fangirl being a kid when this was airing, she follows Masaaki Sakai on Facebook.

Greatest tv show of all times. I knew that at 5 years old & I know it at 46.
This show was so cool ,coz the theme song was sung in English even though broadcasted in Japan. I was 10 years old and tried to sing just like they did,but so hard to pronaunce English and understand the lyrics... This show made me begin to learn English .
