People need to remember John Wick was not the first or only revenge story done in that particular way. It became iconic, but doesn’t mean others can’t use the same concept or even reference it. Revenge plot is old as time.

When it comes the revenge narrative, I feel like the big issue is more of how it falls into the "Death Wish problem". For those who've seen the 1974 film, you're probably wondering what I'm talking about. For those that have read the novel, you'll probably understand a little big more. As the NOVEL was meant to be a criticism of those who say being a vigilante is cool. Author Brian Garfield, stated that the whole point of the story was to show that vengeance only leads to more bloodshed and the main hero becoming their own worst enemy. He'd later release a sequel title Death Sentence that was meant to remind those of this. So if you put those two stories side by side, you'll see the two major type of revenge narratives that exist in entertainment today. Death Wish narratives, like John Wick and Kill Bill, where the leads are seeking vengeance on their own terms, and the violence that gets dished out is mostly justified and makes them badass. Or Death Sentence narratives, like Unforgiven, Oldboy, or Sicario, where a character's pursuit is portrayed as a futile endeavor that only leads them to become the bad guy themselves. So you take your pick on which you rather prefer.

I loved your intro. Excellent review. You can tell from those comments on KZfaq that most od those people know nothing about Indian movies...they think it's about dance....nope most of them are about revenge. John Wick wasn't the first to create such movie (Wick movies uses mostly guns)....go back and check out some of old Indian movies...I mean from 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s etc.....heavy fighting and most about REVENGE and dances too...all of these are part of the bigger story they tell! Dev is inspired by Indian movies...telling a story.

Sean, you should check out Twins from 1988 starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito if you haven’t seen it yet. I thought it was hilariously good. I saw it yesterday and I bet you would love it too. The best part for me was Arnold and Kelly Preston’s relationship in the film because it didn’t feel too “real” and it felt more settled.

I dont like it when people compare matrial arts movies to John Wick. The third one's got more hand to hand combat (which is solid), but a lot of 1 and 2 is just aimbot gunplay that maybe is above average for american standards but doesn't hold a candle to asian stuff, especially Hong Kong

Sorry it is an Indian John Wick. You can't convince me otherwise. Little backstory. I saw this movie on Sunday and I went in 100 percent blind. Didn't watch the trailer, read the synopsis, or read the reviews. I didn't even know the genre. I thought this was going to be a horror film or going to be an Indian film. And to be honest. It was decent. Majority of the runtime I was confused and lost. Didn't know how to explain this movie to my parents. I am not good at explaining movies anyways let alone a movie that I was confused by. I will give it a 3 stars out of 5 instead a 2 because I was entertained and got excited with the fight scenes. Other than that I didn't know what was going on in the film whatsoever. After the movie I was trying to figure out how to explain this movie (and I really still don't). The only thing I could come up with it was like a Mafia type of movie. The first review I watched after the movie was done was Drumdums. And for me he explained it perfectly. An Indian John Wick. I even take it even step further saying it kinda like the Beekeeper because me and my parents both watch that movie. And that what I told my parents. And I am sticking with that.

Unfortunately I didn’t really like it. It felt it was so slow for much of the film (I actually fell asleep). It could have been about an hour and a half long but instead it added an unneeded extra 15-20 minutes or so. The last half hour was great. I’d give it a 5/10.

The fact that it's made by an Indian, and is set in India, about Indians, but made with a Western style is interesting to me, regardless of whether it takes the traditional action movie route. I love seeing India through a different lens than what I'm used to with Indian cinema. Plus, I hear it's got great visuals. What more can you ask for in a movie at the theaters? Something fresh that looks good. But I understand if action films aren't your preferred theater experience.

The movie that was his dream project, that he worked really hard on, both acting and directing his first movie, the movie that was held by Netflix for 2 years and was never going to be released even though it was finished.
