@@Kudos2_Mewhat's your opinion on other martial arts combat practicality? Kung Fu, Ju Jitsu, Wing Chung etc...
@Kudos2_Me
@Kudos2_Me Ай бұрын
@@coloradoyehti1538 Well there are so many variations of Kung Fu. Most Kung Fu is a combination between showmanship and practical application. Usually a great instructor will teach you how to apply what you’ve learned in fighting. And this ultimately affects how practical it is. Karate tends to be a bit more on the showmanship side these days, but also has some practical concepts you can use in a fight (blocking, intercepting a punch). Anything that is based mostly on pressure points, grappling, or intercepting a punch is likely the most practical. So Jiujitsu, Aikido, or mixed martial arts tend to have practical application built into them. Taekwondo used to have some of these concepts, but is now mostly used for exercise and performing. Even in Korea it’s commonly done by kids just for exercise and to stay in shape-not for self defense.

I thought the use of shaky cam was actually handled well considering the director wanted to convey the uncomfortably claustrophobic and anxiety-induced feeling from the protagonist’s pov. **Minor spoilers down** In the first half of the movie, he hadn’t found confidence and strength to fully commit to murdering his enemy, so his mind was scattered and barely escaped the fight. But in the latter half of the movie, he builds his confidence, strength and the conviction to follow through with his plan, so the camera felt more steady and smooth following the action. The character arc and emotional centre of the protagonist was executed so beautifully well.. can’t really relate but there were moments in here I forgot Dev was acting and felt like I was invading someone’s privacy as he dealt with his demons.

I agree. Saw the movie yesterday with my GF and I thought it was fantastic. It was inspired a bit by John Wick yes, but he took a very different approach and is immensly creative with the camera work. Something John Wick lacked of big time. This movie was a blast. The emotional turmoil the guy was enduring, to get to his goal and the way it represented was marvelous. Seldomly have I seen a movie that manages creativity and storytelling as well as a fantastic edit so well. It is not overhyped at all, considering the movie only cost 15 million dollars. Jeremy Jahns has no fucking clue about filmmaking and storytelling. This shows in many of his reviews.

Dev was actually interviewed and he said the shaky cam @ the beginning was done on purpose. It was to symbolize the weakness and lack of confidence of “the kid”. As he gets stronger, the camera changes to a fixed camera and the last big hooray, is a complete 180.

@Gaganpreet708
@Gaganpreet708 Ай бұрын
@@windowsVD That is true. I strongly believe Dev opted to go this route for a few reasons. He was working with extremely limited recording equipment since all his cameras broke. Perhaps shaky cam was the only way for the fights sequences to look presentable given what he was working with? Alternatively, the shakycam could have been a direct result of the subpar camera equipment. Another thing to note, this is his directorial debut. Perhaps he assumed this route would better align with his vision? Criticism is very important for amateur filmmakers. Hopefully for his next projects he keeps the keeps the public disdain for these type of fight scenes in mind. Tdlr I'm willing to excuse the shaky cam this time because of a first time director facing nightmare productions. If this was a James Cameron or Spielberg movie, I would be extremely upset.

I thought the shaky cam was intentional. Without trying to spoil anything, there's a point in the movie where the action and camera work becomes much more focused and steady and it lasts all the way until the end. It mirrors the main character's emotions and headspace. It was a thematic choice.

I don't think a lot of people pick up the idea of why the shaky cam is utilized for the story. Let's make this clear, a LOT of films use shaky cams for the wrong reasons and I will admit with Monkey Man having a little too much for my personal liking. However the first half of the film, Dev Patel's character has a goal that only appeals to himself and stumbles so much when we get to that bathroom scene. The claustrophobia with the amount of people in the night club Then he had to learn to fight with FOCUS and revenge for a better cause. Once you get to the last quarter of the film, the action sequences now have wider shots and fewer people surrounding the area

Concerning your gripes with the shaky-cam, sure, everyone can appreciate long wide action shots that show everything, but Dev took another approach. I felt it really served the out-of-control frenetic energy of its scenes, and it works because the editing and rhythm give a throughline for the many wild cuts. It is a RIDE! And when the film takes a breather it doesn't lull, it gives the necessary space for characters to process all the wild shit.

@ 2:36, The "shakey cam" you are referring to was because there was a stunt guy operating one of the cameras. Someone from the stunt crew's true passion was cinematography. Dev Patel said he would often find him dabbling in it while on set, messin' with cameras and setting up previzes before stunt scenes. So Patel decided to put a camera in his hands during a bunch of the fight scenes. So he could do stunts while filming, like rolling on the ground with the camera and "getting under the armpit of the action," Dev explains. So @ 3:05, technically, there was only 1 cinematographer, but there were 2 camera operators.

I'm not going to lie. This movie was mediocre. I like dev Patel, but the story just fell flat for me. The shaky cam and close ups were annoying and pulled me out of the action and story. The characters just were meh. I couldn't connect to anyone, maybe bc there was very little development of their characters other than 3 of them. Like you said, the movie starts with some intriguing story and action, then starts to pull its punches until the last 30 minutes. I agree with what you said about the trailer and expectations. These reasons are why I felt this way towards the film.

@windowsVD
@windowsVD Ай бұрын
You don’t need good equipment to get steady camera work. You can pretty easily film a coherent fight scene on your phone so long as your actors are well-rehearsed and you did some minimal camera blocking for the fights. Source: I went to film school. I get that this film had a lot of production problems, but I feel like people are beginning to make excuses for the shoddy camera work.
