Mono-printing inspired by Paul Klee with Glue gun, Tin Foil and oil stick

TIME STAMPS (Use these to skip through each section or watch again)
0:00 Begin to sketch out your design on a plain piece of A4 copy paper, keep this simple to begin with and if need to practice this technique first just work on a smaller design to begin with. Look at the work of Paul Klee for some inspiration.
1:22 You now need to prepare a reverse template of the finished design, this will ensure the print will be printed the correct way. Use a larger size card for the template (A3) lay the original sketch down and begin to trace over with firm pressure. Draw over the reverse image to give you the guide lines for the next stage.
3:00 Glue gun. Take your time with this as you need to create a smooth line of glue for this to work, you can build up the thickness by allowing the glue to dry before adding another layer. Don't worry too much about following the design exactly.
5:43 Talc. In order to prevent the foil from sticking to the layer of glue, I find it helps to use a fine sprinkle of talcum powder, this will remove the tackiness of the glue and you will only need to do this for the first print.
6:05 Tin Foil. Use the thicker type of aluminium foil if you can. Use a piece of foil that is bigger than the size of the print. Place over the glue template and begin to apply firm pressure with the fingertips trying not to rip the foil.
7:24 Oil stick. For this mono print I use a Sennelier 38mm Black oil stick. The method can work with oil paint but it is much harder to apply the paint, you could try applying with a soft rag but it will only work with thicker brands of paint. Because these oil sticks contain wax it makes them ideal for lightly rubbing across the surface of the foil to reveal the design.
8:57 The mono printing process. I use a heavyweight smooth card (A3 300gsm) Place the foil onto the card and begin with very light pressure, you can lift the foil to check the progress but don't remove at this stage. For sharper lines press with your finger nail or a blunt pencil. Do not aim for perfection, the great result of this technique is the rough quality of the marks, making each print unique.
9:45 Remove the foil. Always the best part of the process, you never really know how this will turn out. If you are not quite happy with the result, simply wipe the foil with a little turps, dry with a paper towel and begin the process again. The foil should be useful for several more prints and then you can add it to the recycling waste bin once finished.
10:07 Colour. You can always leave the print as a monochrome composition but it can be good to experiment with a little colour, Again I would recommend looking at some of Paul Klee's work to get some inspiration. You could use acrylic paint or any water based paints, and apply with plenty of water. The wax in the oil stick will prevent smudging. I use Winsor & Newton acrylic paint (Yellow Ochre and a little Cadmium Red)
12:54 The finished composition. This technique will take a little practice so please don't be put off by your first attempts. I recommend trying something on a smaller scale to begin with and try out the technique first. I really like the quality of marks that can be achieved with this method and how each print taken from the foil template is unique. Always wipe the foil clean with a little turps to be used again several times then place in the recycle bin when finished.

@DanTirels

Yes but the type of powder doesn't matter, it is only used to prevent the glue from sticking to the foil and you only need to use it on the first print.

Why do you use a small brush to apply the paint.
@DanTirels
@DanTirels 3 жыл бұрын
It was just what I had at the time, I wanted a bit of control for this, but a bigger brush would work just as well. Also don't use your good brushes as they may be ruined by the wax from the oil stick.
@sandall100
@sandall100 3 жыл бұрын
@@DanTirels I understand. And the small brush creates a more interesting shading than a flat wash. I wondered if it had been intentional. I keep a few old or non artist brushes handy for experimenting or odd jobs too. Recently I got interested in monotype and monoprints and I created something similar a couple of months ago using black printing ink on small sheets of kodak paper and acrylic ink. The shapes are very similar to your piece. Edit, the one I did was on card. Using print ink and gouache. instagram.com/p/CM1e98Phu4OU89-px4sU_yblAeZmfDFKEyZhlA0/

Didnt Think you could do acrylics on top of Oil... what happens with the paint, in thoose places, where you might layer the acrylics on top?
@DanTirels
@DanTirels 2 жыл бұрын
It is similar to a wax resist technique. The oilstick or oilbars have a wax content but this would work with conventional oil paint.
