King cobras are rad, but they aren't really cobras. Monocled cobras on the other hand are totally cobras! Obviously, these aren't for everybody, but are they a good pet for a highly venomous snake? Let's head on down to see Tyler Nolan and Kilo to find out.

@amandastakeonit7402

I think that's because as they strike they are coming at you with the force to propell themselves, sink fangs, pull out and retract their body all in as fast as a movement as they can to get away without injury. That's a lot of energy into one movement. The flaw is she hit something solid and the fangs didn't do their thing...she was stopped short, she wasn't up on Newton's laws of motion. ;)

Respect to Tyler; got bit, lost part of a finger and still loves these animals just as much♥️ He knows and respects the risks and in practice these aren't just pets (though he loves them as such), he is more like an educational centre. Big respect to Clint too, who also loves these animals but Is always very clear about what does and doesn't make a good pet (for the average person) without sugar coating, just passion, science and genuine advise.

it's really impressive how some of these keepers have gotten their animals to the point where they show no fear response, Dingo and Chandler's Kings (Thor and Kevin, or even Oracle, whom is Chris Sweet's king) or Kilo for Tyler, they trust their humans. Cobras are notorious for being kinda grumpy. even kilo sometimes will give that hiss and flinch, which will even make Tyler jump sometimes. So to see one be this sweet is so cool.

With venomous, its sometimes better to feel the snake for experienced keepers. Obviously not for someone not experienced, and CERTAINLY not for educational purposes. But you can learn to feel the way they move, muscles expand and contract, breathing, tensing. I absolutely do not under any circumstances recommend anyone do it, BUT it's why you see so many venomous keepers do it. Either extra protection or bare hands, no in between

Your channel is very therapeutic, I used to be terrified of snakes, even watching videos was anxiety inducing. Since I have discovered your channel I’ve learned so much about behavior and such that if I see a snake I don’t immediately freeze and go the other way. I’m a long way from owning a snake but I’ve come to appreciate them as more than murder noodles. Some are quite beautiful and I’ve seen some that are actually kind of cute. I still have that fear but I have more respect for them now. Thank you!

I respect Tyler for his love of these misunderstood animals. I disagree with him about the ease of handleability of viperidae vs. elapidae. I also think he's wildly irresponsible to handle these snakes the way he does for the camera. If you want to handle a snake without tools, fine, but understand it's foolish and you need to be ready for the consequences (e.g. losing a finger or losing your life). If you have a platform and a vast following like Tyler's on KZfaq, people are going to imitate you whether you warn them one way or not. I just wish he would practice safe handling, at least on camera. Him free handling is what almost cost him his life, and did cost him a finger and a bucket of money in hospital bills. Someone without his resources and connections would suffer a lot more physically and financially.

Hey Adam, really cool comment. I totally agree. I do wonder if you are still able to create that trust / bond with the snakes without that No Touching thing. Will a snake be as docile as Kilo if its only handled with tools for instance? I'm not looking for excuses to touch the animal to clarify, I just figure getting the snake as docile as can be is safest in the long run, but maybe how the snake feels about you shouldn't matter if you're doing everything right. Probably a bad question but figured I'd ask. I also do think there is value to Tyler's approach, if only to show that it is possible for these animals to be "handleable", if that makes sense. Shouldn't at all be replicated, but, its almost like a scientific discovery that you can do the whole snake charmer thing. Again, shouldnt be replicated, and it doesn't help a charismatic person as at the forefront of this social experiment. But yah, new discovery
@adamaustin8632
@adamaustin8632 Жыл бұрын
@@Ryan-hj8il The venomous snakes I and my coworkers handle are actually extremely docile because of our insistence on using hooks. Snakes feel like they're being attacked when they're grabbed, and hooks don't grab. As far as bonding, mammals use touch and cuddling to show affection and deepen interpersonal connections, but we don't see that behavior in reptiles. The desire we feel to touch and hold things we care about is born out of our own mammalian evolution, and it's important not to project our own feelings and desires onto the snake. For the snake, being physically held is at best neutral but is usually stressful to some degree. As for Tyler, yes, if you practice free handling an animal enough it will become accustomed to being held, but that in no way eliminates the risk. It does show that these snakes are not monsters, but that can be shown just as easily be by observing how docile they are on a hook. I think that for people who lack the self control to not hold or cuddle a snake, they should just get a nonvenomous species. They're just as cool, just as interesting, and won't kill you. My big beef with Tyler is that while he puts warnings on all his videos saying 'do not attempt,' he still spends a portion of most videos talking about why someone should handle snakes the way he does, completely undermining the warning. Professionals take care to implement effective and safe procedures. While he clearly cares for his animals, Tyler lacks the wisdom, self control, or safety practices for me to consider him a professional. He shows poor judgement in his insistence on handling animals this way especially after he was bitten, and in many of his other life decisions that have landed him in the news. He is not the guy to go to for sound advice or safe practices.

Fun fact: at my first reptile expo at age 14, a guy tried to sell me a leucistic monocled cobra for $75. In Mississippi, apparently all you need is a hunting license, which you can get at age 12. He tried to then downplay me to a rattlesnake for $45.

Kilo is BEAUTIFUL. But when Tyler took him out of his cage his was like "No Daddy, I don't want to be out, I want to be in my nice warm home." I know snakes probably don't have a concept of "daddy", but "big thing I trust not to hurt me" is probably close enough for a snake.

I'm stuck between the idea of a western hognose, a small family of garters or a colony of morning geckos. If I had the space it would be all 3...but only one cabinet will fit in the space I have (and I keep my house too cool not to use a cabinet style enclosure for all but the hardiest reptiles).
