I have owned the Monolith 7X amp for about 18 months and could not be more happy. It is heavy, but once you place it where needed its all good. It seems like it has headroom for days and powers my Bowers and Wilkins CM series speakers with ease

Awesome review Brian - I have the Monolith 7X pushing SVS Ultra Towers/Center Channel at reference level with no distortion. I’m interested in trying a Class D amp for my atmos speakers.. Thanks for the review!!!

Great Insights. Great Review. I've been looking at both the Monolith 9 channel, 7 channel Class A/B and Buckeye. I'm new to separates not sure what route I'm going. Processor is a Anthem AVM70. Speakers Polk R700 tower fronts, Polk L400 Center, all 3 of the LCR are about 86-88db efficient but can dip below 4ohm. the rears and heights are Polk r100 and R900, 8ohm easy to drive. Been a tough choice, but I'm leaning towards the A/B based on so many positive reviews.

I am using the 7x and the 8250x to power the 9 and 6 of my 9.2.6 system... All set up to be the same relative volume. I have been quite happy with them being voiced very similarly... The 7x is running my L C R LS RS LR and RR and the 8250x is running my 6 heights and the Left Wide and Right Wide... Atmos panning from one speaker to the next is seamless even if changing amplifiers... I have a different preference than you. I generally like the AB better than D signature and I love tube sound in my analog (thus tube preamp and tube DAC). Nice video and I too vouch for the similar voicing of the Monolith "X" amps.

@@hifihometheater I'm afraid not... LOL it's the even vs odd number of channels. That center messes up the math. I am using old school Paradigm Studio 100 L&R, Studio CC450 center, Studio 60 Left Wide and Right Wide, Studio ADP 450 Surrounds, and Studio 20 Rear Surrounds. All my Heights are SVS Prime Elevations (and the subs are a pair of SB16 Ultras). I set up all the levels to be identical with a dB meter and a couple of different test tones before running Anthem Arc to correct for my (very treated) room. I spent a lot of time switching from Left to Left Wide to Left Rear (and the same on the right) to see if I could hear any voicing differences and I hear none... I chose the wide speakers to be the "oddball" of the base layer because there's a lot less content that actually has a discrete signal for them so my processor will usually just be filling the gap to the surrounds. Listening to music I only play in 2.0 since those Studio 100s have a 3dB down that's below 27Hz (or 2.2 if I feel especially rowdy)

I'd like to see some power draw specs from the wall using a Kill-a-Watt meter as Class D should use less power, and produce less heat but those NC502MP modules need dual power inputs and heatsinks as they get so hot, so I wonder just how efficient it is? With the cost difference the 7X just outright wins if they are neck and neck, but if you go to Buckeye or VTV you can get the 8 channel NC502MP builds for about the same price (and funny enough they are fully rated for the ~500w vs Monoprice) I had been planning to get a 7x and 5x for years until the new Hypex stuff came out, then I decided to switch, but now... I dunno maybe back the 7X and 5X I can't see any good reason not too. Until I really figure it out long term I am using and will continue to use 6x Crown XLS 1502 Amps I have been very happy with them, and something very visceral to see an entire stack of rack mounted amps kick on :)

@@rynev3392Yeap that was the only one on my radar, lots of things going for it that I like. But no hdmi 2.1/ no support for gaming features is also a deal breaker. I’ll wait another 3 months pulling the trigger on anything but it would be nice if they introduce an MDC for it/ entirely new model with it then it’d automatically be a stunning winner for me

A thing you forgot to mentioned is that 8125 requires to power outlet connections and the 7x only requires one. I find this odd because it’s a class D amp is suppose to draw less power than an AB amp. On paper the 7x offer more wattage per channel than the 8125,l and it only needs a single outlet connection.
@hifihometheater
@hifihometheater Жыл бұрын
It’s the bigger 8250 that needs two power cords. Just one for the 8125. Yeah, I find it strange as well. I wonder if the amp truly needs to pull that much from the wall or if it’s just a janky design related to using off the shelf modules?
@Akiwa4183

@@hifihometheater Not really. If all 8 channels are to pull their full rated power it will exceed 20 amps, therefore 2 power cords

I want to get an ATI at523 to run my LCR speakers (Kilpsch RP 280, 450C) and this Monolith to run my surrounds (Klipsch RP 250S sides, RP 260 rears and four 500SA heights) in a 11.2.4 set up...is the Monolith sufficient in this role?
@hifihometheater
@hifihometheater Жыл бұрын
If you are talking about the 8125x, yes, I think thats where this amp will shine best. For powering surrounds and height channels. the channel number matches up and it should have plenty of power for that application since those channels do not need as much power as the LCR.

I tried the 7 channel unit (nearly broke my back carrying it up and down stairs - its so heavy). But returned because it would not power up (surprising, since I believe its made by ATI). Then I considered the other one, but I don't understand an 8 channel amp and it seemed underpowered.
@hifihometheater
@hifihometheater Жыл бұрын
That is surprising but it can happen with any manufacturer. the 8 channels is because the Hypex modules they are using are stereo. It seems odd at first but it does allow the amp to flex into a surround & atmos roll nicely or the extra channel could power some transducers so it does add flexibility. As I mentioned in the video, you would need to step up to the bigger class D amp if you want similar power to the 7x. What did you end up getting?
@LS-ti6jo

@@hifihometheater I went back to my old Aragon gear - two stereo and a 3 channel amp. Aragon amps are incredible (obviously, they've lasted 20 + years), but Klipsch bought the company then killed it (who knows why), and I was looking to simplify my system by replacing 3 amps with one 7 channel amp.
