“Buy so much concrete” still orders it short. I have poured two pads in my life and the first lesson anyone in the game told me was NEVER be short

What was the footer depth around the perimeter? Where the block went on top.

Ron, I Found your video via a search for "Monolithic Slab". I have plans to build a 30' X 40' garage here in Kentucky, this year. I have one concern about site ground preparation and I don't really know the significance of this issue. Specifically, the original ground level near the back of the build site is about one foot above the floor of the planned garage. Can I simply: 1) excavate the dirt in that area, 2) then pour the slab, 3) then lay two runs of 8" X 8" X 16" concrete blocks on the back side of the structure, 4) then paint the outside of the blocks with that black stuff available at Lowes to prevent effervescence , 5) then refill the excavated dirt at the back side of the concrete blocks? What would you do? Regards, Mike Godbey

I would pour the floor and then wet set some rebar dowels in the thick edge of slab. then spray foam one course of Nudura ICF blocks on the slab and pour that solid with a horizontal rebar in that row. Then build on top of the Nudura wall. Backfill with well draining gravel or stone and put a drain pipe at the bottom to get rid of any bulk water back there cover drain with washed stone and filter fabric also.

No string?

Yes we layed the blocks with a string line after the corners were done.

the string is on the inside

Yes these are split face blocks so the string is placed on the inside to lay them. The outside of block will carry in size.

i have a garage built this way and one corner is sagging from soil erosion, big cracks in floor and wall. Terrible design, should have deep foundation footing around perimeter, then poor the slab, then build the wall.

The sub grade probably was not done proper. I have done hundreds of these as well as deep frost wall foundations with great success. the key is the soil used under the slab.

The first garage I built was a monolithic pour with a perimeter that went below the frost line, after about 15 years the floor cracked and moved, well so did the wall. I sold the house at 24 years and so the problem isn't mine anymore, but the garage is still standing at 40 years now. I have built many since and never a monolithic again; only a footer below the frost line and a floating floor. The building I am in is the floating floor with footer and at 36 years the walls are as good as the day they were layed with zero cracks or separation. I have no doubt that with proper soil preparation it would improve the survivability of the monolithic floor, but with the season changes freeze-thaw conditions in and around the building matter, trees, roots erosion and the like are a problem. I am a firm believer in get your foundation below the frost line, set your walls on that; do a good job on your floor with prep, and let it float inside with conditions and your building will outlast you..!

@@alumicomp I think the problem with that one was that the mono went down below frost at the edge. we only do the edge about 1 foot thick and the floor about 6"and they never move at all. I do also build on footers with stem walls all the time especially if we are hooking a garage to a house with full basement.

@@bondobuilt386 I am sure you are right, but I don't build but a couple of buildings a year and it's always friends and relatives, so I go with the one way that I found works. You guy's look very professional and from my point of view do a great job..! Thanks' for the reply, Dan...!
