This demo shows how to work with the monoprinting process to explore the potential of mark making and how you can apply this to your own work. I will explore this further in future videos to look at how this will work with non abstract compositions, such as a still life, landscape or even portraits.
FREE monoprint now included with each order of the monoprinting booklet (limited supply)

This is a very simple process to try and the most important thing to remember is always use very small amounts of paint, you can always build up the layers but if you add too much paint at the start it will be difficult to work on the composition. Always try to work with good quality oil paint as the cheaper paint tends to be to be thin and contain too much oil. I use Winsor & Newton for this demo and find the quality ideal.

your videos are restful, without music, just the gestures and the noise of the paper tearing, the friction of the ink. I love it

thank you for sharing your creative process! The torn newspaper edges and fine skewer lines are a lovely contrast to the "messy" marks. Your videos are encouraging particularly because they are unintimidating. Your compositions are powerfully suggestive.

I love your method of mark making -- I find it lends authenticity to the finished piece. One should see evidence of the artist in a work of art. Thank you for making this demo.

outstanding process and result as always. is there a video where you talk about the materials used for your work? I am especially interested in the paper, as I am always trying to do this on a budget, I want to buy suitable paper ( quality and haptic as well as looks and usability) in bulk..

Thanks, good to know you are enjoying the videos. It is important to me that I always try to show techniques that anyone can try, and they are always achievable through very little costs. I'm trying to include an Amazon product link with the latest videos that would give some indication of costs if this is helpful. With paper I recommend buying in bulk as you will save money this way. I would always try to buy good quality paint as some of the cheaper ones give poor results. Hope this helps, good luck.

I love the fine lines in your prints and have been trying to replicate this effect in my own work - without success. I have applied ink to various thicknesses of recycled plastic (such as a used potting soil bag). When draping it lightly over the paper to begin making marks, the paper surface grabs the entire sheet, transferring so much ink that any line work is obscured. Wondering what sort of plastic you are using here that stays light and seems less sticky. Thank you!!

Hi Dan, so enjoyable, thank you! How would you use this technique on a large scale? Having the printing plastic on the table and paper on top? Can’t think of any other way, say for A3 size?
@DanTirels

I have done demos on a larger scale on paper and canvas.

Another interesting monoprint Dan. I see you wipe the template edges with a rag removing the paint. Does the rag contain a solvent, or paint thinner ? Thanks for these simple but effective demos Dan.
@DanTirels
@DanTirels 3 жыл бұрын
No, I would not recommend using any kind of solvent, just work with very small amounts of paint. The solvent or thinner would be too absorbed by the paper.

Hi Dan, I've seen you use block ink in earlier vids, how does that compare to the oil paint you have used here, when you use your damp cloth to smudge? And thanks for a fantastic vid 👍😎
@DanTirels
@DanTirels 3 жыл бұрын
Block printing ink can be difficult, it has a very sticky feel so it is harder to use for this technique but you just get used to it. Worth a try.

Very cool. I love your color paintings too, but sometimes the B&W ones are just so striking. I've never worked with oil paints before; but your videos have me wanting to try a little bit. I'm curious - how do you clean up after? Do you wash your hands with soap? Or use wipes? I assume you put your rag and qtips into landfill after using.
@DanTirels
@DanTirels 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, glad you are enjoying the demos. Working with oil paint can be messy, you can get hand cleaners for removing oil paint and hand wipes, I sometimes use gloves but not when filming videos because it is difficult to use the camera. I try and avoid putting rags and paper towels into landfill and always recycle when possible, Iv'e even used waste materials in sculpture.

I love your work. Why do you choose oil paint over acrylic ?
@DanTirels
@DanTirels 3 жыл бұрын
Sometime the slower drying time helps with this process and allows you to manipulate the paint for longer.

Everyone, if you don't want to rip your paper with the tape you can either get the green or pink tape or you can take off some of the tack of the blue by pressing the tape onto your clothing before putting it down. Just an fyi

Do you gesso the paper first?
@DanTirels
@DanTirels 3 ай бұрын
Not always, this will depend on the oil paint or the thickness of the paper. Remove excess oil from the paint by spreading on absorbant card maybe allow to dry out a little.
