It’s interesting that in the 50s plastic was considered luxury and beauty, while now it’s considered to be cheap and garbage. Indispensable or disposable. The fact that so much of our environment is polluted by micro plastic waste probably did not help its image in the long run.

The concrete foundation is still there. They hollowed it out, painted it green, and planted some trees in it. Honestly though, construction would probably be a better use case for plastic than the disposable one we've given it today, seeing as plastic's original purpose was to be a long-lasting material that would take a lot of abuse and time to break down.
@orinblank2056
@orinblank2056 2 жыл бұрын
Except it would still slowly break down through sun and water damage, the get washed into the ground and leave the soil full of microplastics. It wouldn't even last particularly long either. You can look at plastic that has been left outside for a long time to see how much it falls apart, like children's jungle gyms or old barrels. It starts to lose color, then gets brittle and falls apart

@@patrickmarsh2538 the house had a concrete base, which is still there today! They had to use essentially cutting torches to even dismantle the plastic home attached to that base, so only the absolute strongest winds would be able to rip it off. TBH an American wooden home is also very light and blowable-seeming compared to the brick houses I’m accustomed to, but those wooden houses mostly do okay. I’d be interested in a test of situations where they get blown off their foundations (since that does happen to that construction sometimes), how the plastic construction compared. But AFAIK that was never done.

That would be so utterly different it would be almost impossible to imagine. It's easy to only think of plastic in terms of household products, but it is used so widely in so many critical industrial applications that lacking it would require an entire different understanding of technology. One good example is Hydraulics. Hydraulic cylinders rely on non-metallic seals to function. Usually these are made from a synthetic rubber or plastic (You can use leather or rubber but they degrade very fast and don't last very long). If there was no plastic hydraulic systems would be much much rarer and only used in very specialized applications. This has significant knock on effects. One example of that would be in heavy duty construction equipment, without reliable hydraulics most construction equipment would operate like it did in the 1930s. This would mean that not only are big buildings rarer, but everyday buildings are more expensive to build and buy. A society where housing is even more ridiculously expensive than today would look very different to ours socially and politically. And that's only one tiny aspect of this world. Cars and furniture would look radically different as they rely on hydraulic presses for manufacture. Airliners might not exist as large aircraft can't be controlled without cylinders to move the control surfaces and gear. Robots might not exist as we know them today. This one small element alone causes dramatic changes to the course of history.

Notice how the only thing used by the man was his razor and toothbrush, but the only thing you see the woman and daughter do are chores (washing dishes, cooking, setting the table, doing the bed). I.e. "For the men, look at all this cool stuff to relax and look after yourself", "For the women, look at all this cool stuff to help your husband relax and to look after him". It makes me realise how different the world was just 70 yeas ago (fun fact: did you know women did not have proper voting rights in canada until the 1960's) compared to now. If that ad were made today it would be considered so sexist, but then it was not only normal, it was the future.

Currently watching this while eating my burger for dinner. I look around the kitchen and I see so many things that use plastics in either large or small quantities. My window frame is plastic, the fridge has lots of plastics used for panels and the interior walls, my microwave has a plastic fascia, my recycling bin is plastic, hell - even my steel and wooden bar stool has a few plastic end caps on it. Plastics play a huge role in the modern household for a multitude of reasons. While they don’t make up the bulk of construction, they have their place. Honestly - PVC piping is a huge one that comes to mind. It’s easy to forget sometimes, but compared to what our ancestors had: we absolutely do live in the early part of what would historically have been considered the technologically advanced future. I’m interested to see where it goes from here. We’ve been making leaps and bounds into things like AI in forms that would’ve been science fiction not so long ago.

I’m confused about the sellout part. Seems like he’s doing more content that interests him personally instead of making stuff because it was popular. Almost the opposite of selling out. And morals? Give me a break, just because you don’t approve doesn’t make it a moral failing. This person needs to get off the internet for a little bit, I think.

Plastic housing is the future. It'll be cheap to create, especially if the process is automated, and we can churn them out quickly. With today's innovations with technology we can make them efficient and practical. AND there's more than enough plastic in landfills and the ocean to build thousands of modules without ever having to add "fresh" plastic. I think this will be ideal to make pod homes that have a limited footprint while pulling plastic from the trash.

None of the features of the home seem terribly outré or unreasonable, really. Even using your dishwasher for storage... I think anyone who has a dishwasher has been guilty of just taking plates straight from the rack instead of bothering to stack them in the cupboards more than once.

Honestly, if it were made of modern flame-retardant materials and had normal cupboards, I'd ABSOLUTELY live in this thing. I love the design, it's slick yet cosy. That living room especially. Add a couple beanbags on the floor, and it'd be an awesome room to lounge around in and get high with friends.
