I went to the same school in Coventry as Clive Owen, he was a couple of years ahead of me but we where in the same school production of the Pirates of Penzance that Clive played lead in. I did the spotlights so you can thank me because I doubt he'd be where he is today without my lights!

@@SR-ob3wn For sure! I think he asked when Craig was picked but he didn't want to do it. I've been watching some of his movies lately like "Duplicity" and "The International" and "Croupier" and "I'll Sleep when I'm Dead" and he would have had the possibility to be the Best James Bond, very close to the book.

Clive Owens is one of the greatest actors of cinema. Period. When he's on screen, you are just riveted. I think that because he's such a dedicated family man who refuses to play the Hollywood game, he isn't on the radar the way he should be. He should have been Bond after Pierce Brosnan. Can you imagine what HE would have brought to the role? He was also amazing in The Knick, one of the best TV shows of all time. I am an unabashed fan and am delighted to see him back. Here's hoping 2024 is the Clive renaissance and we see MORE of him.

Really enjoyed this. It captured Hammett's dialogue, and Owen doesn't try to channel Bogart, he just makes the character his own. A lot of people talk about the pacing, but the Maltese Falcon was in no way an action film. This is slow burning and character centric, bringing in the French-Algierian war in a way that it actually meant something to France, as well as the history of collaborators from WW2. I like stories that take their time, so if "well written and slow paced" equals "super slow with no action", well, so be it.

Owen was on a lot of people’s minds for Bond back then. Including mine. According to interviews, he was flat out never interested in playing James Bond, never auditioned, and would’ve declined to audition if it had been offered. He wanted something different for his career, and it seems that he’s achieved it since.

@@johnnyskinwalker4095 He didn’t even decline it. According to Owen he was never asked, and if he had been he would’ve refused. There was a story in the press about him being considered for Bond once, but he said that was just put there by his agent at the time to garner interest.

@@jackanaples I knew he was not interested but I remember at the time everybody wanted him to do be Bond esp. cause of Croupier and I'll Sleep When I'm Dead. It's pretty strange that he wasn't asked(esp. since I don't think Craig was the first choice)
@jackanaples
@jackanaples 6 ай бұрын
@@johnnyskinwalker4095 It's true a lot of fans and others had Owen in mind for Bond after seeing CROUPIER. I did myself. However, in retrospect it's easy to see why he wasn't considered. He's a great actor, but it's too obvious a choice--which is why all the fans picked up on it. As for Daniel Craig, I don't know if he was the first choice initially or not. There's probably a lot of men on their list as first tier choices. Barbara Brocolli is on the record as saying she first noticed him in the movie ELIZABETH (1998) and made it a point to approach him when they decided to recast. During the casting process, Craig definitely became the primary candidate, with Henry Cavill being the runner up if he passed on it.

No. It's much simpler than that. If you read or watch a lot of crime thrillers, you'll notice that they tend to make use of the wars that happened around the time of the story. For crime stories set in the 1920s and 1930s, many of the characters fought in WWI. In the late 1940s and 1950s, the characters have WWII experience and/or Korean War experience. In the 1970s and 1980s, the wartime experience was mainly Vietnam. Since the 1990s, the characters in crime fiction tend to have experience fighting in Afghanistan or Iraq. The reason is simple. Soldiers who have fought in a war have been trained to kill and did so successfully if they came back home. They are immediately seen as more of a threat than someone who doesn't have wartime military experience. The French-Algerian War ended in 1962, the year before this miniseries takes place. Sam Spade is 60 years old in France. Naturally he's going to have to deal with younger men with recent military experience under the belt. And that experience in that time in that place would've been in Algeria.
