As the monsoon relieves the summer heat, it also brings health challenges for children. Dr Mahesh Balsekar, Sr Consultant - Paediatric Medicine, Narayana Hospital - SRCC, Mumbai highlights crucial precautions for keeping children healthy.
Waterborne infections like diarrhoea, dysentery, and viral hepatitis are common. Ensuring children drink safe, preferably boiled or filtered water, can prevent these infections. Secondly, street food should be avoided to reduce risk.
Respiratory issues also spike during the monsoon. Teaching children to cough into their elbows or tissues helps prevent the spread of viruses, including swine flu and common colds. Vaccination against influenza is highly recommended, especially for children under five or those with asthma or heart conditions.
Mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria, dengue, and chikungunya are prevalent too. Using nets, wearing long-sleeved clothes, and applying safe mosquito repellents can offer protection. However, avoid prolonged use of smoke-based repellents indoors.
Lastly, keeping children's skin dry and clean is essential to avoid skin infections. With these precautions, Dr Balsekar assures children can enjoy the monsoon season safely.
