***** About Living Traditions Homestead *****
Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out new videos every week! We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.
We are a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for us to earn fees by linking to Amazon.com and affiliated sites.

that is definitely a goose egg, my first goose egg was laid at 8 months and yes it was fertile...I took 3 and incubated them. at 10 days I candled the eggs and saw the embryo and the veins...30 days from the incubation days 3 healthy goslings hatched...amazing, that was 17 years ago and still have one from that batch living

We have ducks for the first time, and I'm amazed at how dirty they always are! Today I collected 2 from our 3 females, they lay quite a bit more than I'd imagined. I also found a "Fairy Egg" tiny little thing so the contrast was significant! Not sure if that's from an old lady hen or one of last season's new girls, I'm guessing one of our legacy flock ladies who turn 6 years old this year. No more eggs but their "personalities" and longevity will keep them in our flock until nature takes its course. These older hens were our start to farming & homesteading... they'll always be near & dear to my heart. I'm sure you have a video on that! I love the content you've put out over the years, and wish you all the best as you care for your homestead, family and all of us, too! Thanks!

Great idea for the pool, if you've never incubated goose eggs, they need extra humidity and you can put them into a glass of water to soak up extra water. It's really fun to see the gosling moving inside the egg too They need a lot of extra to hatch without being sticky and stuck in the egg.

I remember duck eggs being very good for baking and goose eggs being too strong flavored to eat. We mostly stuck to eating the chicken eggs. Since no one would eat the goose eggs, gramp got rid of all thirty of them. I think he originally got them to mow the field. Back then all we had was push mowers. That was back 74 years ago. Goats were a better lawn mower and they gave milk that we all liked better.

When my geese began to lay they were just a tad bit smaller than their mature eggs. They would ignore their eggs until they are finished laying for the spring. They would bury them in pine straw until then. When they were done for the season they would sit the clutch. We had 2 African geese and when one got off the nest the other would get on. It was so fun to watch. Then, no more eggs till spring. Good luck with your efforts to incubate the eggs. We put an X on the eggs that we wanted them to hatch and we collected the others to incubate. Our drake never bothered them and the geese had a better hatch rate than we did in the incubator.

Definitely goose eggs. My first goose egg was discovered by my neighbor’s nephew. He wanted to come in the fence and see the geese. They are quite docile so I gave him a few cautions and let him in. He found the egg and I thought it was an enormous duck egg. Nope. The geese had started laying. It was October and they weren’t a year old yet so I was surprised. One of those geese always laid double yolk eggs. She was the flock protector (even more than the male) and was unfortunately selected when a predator came by. I’ve only had one goose who felt the urge to set on eggs. That was also the only time I was attacked. They pulled my hair as I bent over and my arm was punched by a bill. Raised quite a lump. Very impressive. From now on, if they set I just let the be. Also, all the goose fertilization occurs in water so now that you’ve filled the pool you’ll be seeing lots of mating behavior. The mated ones will start loosing feathers in a small area on the back of their neck just below their head.

Your big egg is a goose egg. One sure way to check is to crack it. Duck egg shells are much thinner than a goose egg. It takes the back of a big knife to crack a goose egg. Just like chickens, a young goose’s egg is usually smaller than they will be when the geese are older.

I have a simple pallet on grey block as an emergency shelter for my chickens to run under. It is just a simple safe place from hawks if needed. Or extra shade in the summer.

Yes it’s a goose egg!! Congrats!! It’s a bit early for nesting yet. You will know when mating starts!!! It’s quite a show they put on.
