0:28 always makes me emotional because of how sweet and happy they truly are when they're together like that and no one is there to intervene. Constance had a hard time forgiving others because of her harsh and abusive past, and she acted irrationally at times because of that but it's understandable seeing as how she was mistreated and dehumanized by people all her life. Her husband understood this, and because he was the only one who understood her and cared for her, they really were happy together. It makes me sad that such a pure and loving couple had to go through so much pain and suffering not just because of Constance's tragic death, but because it was brought on them by outside intervention. People, the outsiders, were the ultimate catalyst of why everything ended so tragically for them. They were probably never going to be able to live a peaceful and happy life together because of how hurtful others can be, and I think that's really what makes their story all the more tragic 😢

1:50 I love this section of the score, it encapsulates Nebbercracker’s sense of loss but relief of having let go. This movie is portrayed as this spooky Halloween movie about a haunted house, but it’s so much mor than that. This movie is about grief and how to deal with it and get through it with love. I only realise now years, maybe even a decade now later, that this wasn’t about Nebbercracker’s house being haunted, the thing that made the house evil was Nebbercracker’s grief. It was never haunted, it was a metaphor for his grief of losing his wife. He loved kids, but when that horrible situation happened, all he could do was quiver back and look behind the spectacle of an angry man. He was warning kids away because he truly didn’t know what he would do if his anger broke loose. And it did with DJ and Chowder, that was the final straw. But DJ saw through his mask, and saw pain. Nebbercracker was able to make it through this pain with DJ’s help. “If I lose her, I’ll have no one”, Nebbercracker was nervous to let go of the one thing he still had left to love, not his house, but the memories of his wife. “We have been trapped for 45 years, but now, we’re free” I always thought that line meant that he and the kids were free. But it was his liberation of his grief and regrets, he let go of his wife. And even though it was sad for him to let go, it was truly the happiest moment of his life. God I love this movie. I’ll never forget it for as long as I’m alive.

This truly was an emotional revelation for Nebercracker and Constance when he said "We're free" Constance was free from the torment of her own anger and grudges that bound her soul to the wood and stone of that house. And Nebercracker free from the toxicity of the relationship between him and her angered spirit, no longer having to dedicate all of his time and effort into ensuring she doesn't hurt anyone, binding his soul to the house as well in a more metaphorical sense. Great undertones at play here, this movie is really underrated

(M,72) That just happened to me a week ago. No, she didn't die, at least not physically, but I have carried a torch for my first wife from 50 years ago. We saw each other at the funeral of a friend and talked for a couple of hours. I learned quite a lot about myself and why I felt like I did. Things like the young girl I married so long ago doesn't exist anymore, the senior woman I met with is someone different. Had a thought just now, maybe I should start referring to her (her/then) in the past tense, and her/now in present tense. Spending time with her, indeed I did see that she's a different person. And the result of processing the whole enchilada, my experience was much like Mr. Nebbercracker's. The young girl haunts me no longer. I'm free.
