I don't think most people realize that intro was ripped, phrase for phrase, from the in-game mh4u gunlance tutorial. I remember that line cause I was wasting time, doing the weapon tutorials, when the ace lancer pulled THAT line on me and I lost my shit.

Since you made it a deal with the Striker style, the Gunlance is capable of chaining into Wyvern Fire from several moves. Mot intuitively, hit X+A after a slam to immediately charge up the shot instead of going into a full burst. Less intuitively, you can go into wyvern fire by pressing X+A after the 3rd upward poke, which makes it particularity useful when you succeeded in taking down a flying monster using them. It's honestly quite fascinating how few people actually seem to know about that.
@FakeDadRealFriend
@FakeDadRealFriend 8 жыл бұрын
The 3rd upward poke WF was something I regularly used in 4u. It's been a feature for a while now.
@SethAbercromby
@SethAbercromby 8 жыл бұрын
Vincent502 It's been a thing since 3U in fact. Being able to use WF as a combo-finisher was part of the first revision. 4U didn't add too much outside of the jumping attacks and the R+A shell rush I think.
@FakeDadRealFriend
@FakeDadRealFriend 8 жыл бұрын
Yeah. Shell rush makes sense, though. Lacking an equivalent to shield advance that normal Lance has always felt odd to me.
@SethAbercromby
@SethAbercromby 8 жыл бұрын
Well, shell rush still only really makes sense in the context of jumping attacks in my opinion, since you essentially are just doing the forward+X charge defaulting to the A interrupt. It still lacks any defensive benefits and is limited in advancement options given how sluggish it is to get into motion with the shield up to correct any misalignments. It's the only method of getting the jumping shell attack though, since forward+X always results in an immediate slam. And Lance is supposed to be the more defensive of the two with the lighter weapon allowing for more versatile movement options. GL is intended to be a sluggish, but powerful technical weapon utilizing an aggressive hammer and anvil approach to combat.

Ehh, I want to say it's not so bad, but then I've been playing Gunlance actively since 3U, and it will be my main weapon once more in MHGen after having gotten mostly benched in 4U. I know the weapon pretty well at this point.
@joshhaworth2155

It's just a weapon I never grasped what I was supposed to do with. There seems to be no clear approach, but rather just do whatever and kill things. That's just my opinion though.
@laggalot1012
@laggalot1012 8 жыл бұрын
Josh Haworth Well, first of all, it helps to remember the Gunlance's go-to combo, that being the stab-stab-uppercut (or triple stab is also good if the style allows it). For larger opportunities, You can fire a shell after the last stab to extend the combo and transition into more stabs. That's the most basic behavior with Gunlance. In MHGen, you've also gotta look for shelling opportunities more than usual to get the heat gauge up. Get it at least in Orange, that's what really matters. And naturally, be careful where you fire your shells, full-burst included. People don't like getting blasted. I often like firing shells upwards, after an uppercut for that reason. Is this the kind of direction you're looking for with the weapon?

I'm assuming he mean "less complex" Gunlance was already slightly tedious to use, now with the heat gauge, it's even worse. The damage output is still decent, I mained it on MH:G on the 3DS. I really feel like the damage nerf + heat gauge was a big F-You to gunlance mains, it's the slowest weapon in the game and needed higher damage to offset being a turtle.
@KazeMemaryu
@KazeMemaryu 8 жыл бұрын
I'm really not satisfied with how the Gunlance turned out in MHX. It seems like the devs were intentionally holding back a lot of potential. Despite the lack in mobility, the raw damage doesn't really iron it out, attacks are still too stiff, and aerial style kinda lacks in "style". The one thing I do love is the hunter arts, but as a GL main, I was hoping for better additions. Also, we still don't have separate elemental/status shelling, which is by far the one thing I'm hoping to see added the most.
@GunpowderCoffee
@GunpowderCoffee 8 жыл бұрын
+Kaze Memaryu yeah. I had a lot of time-outs in G content in mh4u already, even when playing as aggressively as i could. I felt it was a bit lacking in the damage department before and i mainly used it as my 3rd main weapon for fun in online, the others being switch axe and insect glaive, which left it in the dust when only looking at the clear times. Hearing that shelling got nerfed i lost any motivation to use this weapon again. Don't get me wrong, it is a great weapon on paper. Pew-pewing is fun and all but it just turned out rather poor in MHX.

@BlaizeTheDragon
@BlaizeTheDragon 8 жыл бұрын
Malfestio is one of the biggest douchebags to grace the series. He is essentially a "fuck you" to anyone using adept or aerial. Nargacuga is a cake walk to adept compared to him. Infact even if you manage to adept evade an attack, he'll just fly into you or tail slap you regardless, if not will confuse you. I've never seen a monster so infuriating. On the flipside, adept gun weapons are great against him but for those who don't use them won't have a good time. (i mentioned aerial as well because he denies you of trying to bounce on him and even if you do he moves away or does the confusion slam)

thrust in 4u= 24 motion thrust in gen=21motion slam in 4u=40 slam in gen= 36 upward strike in 4u=28 upward strike in gen=25 guard poke in 4u=18 guard poke in gen=16 charge scoop/unsheathing attack in 4u=32 charge scoop/unsheathing attack in gen=28 Keeping in mind that orange ups damage by 15% and red ups it to do even more damage, id say the weapon got buffed if anything. Just more difficult to use though. The only shitty things are the shelling nerf and artillery god removal, but that's understandable as the game only has high rank monsters. But what Gunlance did get were some awesome hunter arts, covering the three things this Gen's weapon needed. Some attacks, such as the aerials do more damage in generations as well.

+gaijin hunter Just wanted to clear up some misconception; the decrease in motion values (at least for the 8 lance attacks) is more of a 10 percent decrease, not 15 (if my math is correct). This causes the Red Portion of the gunlance gauge to be about a 7% increase of Mh4u's (as opposed to a 15 percent decrease, which would lead to Mhx's red gauge being 2 percent stronger than mh4u's damage)

After taking a 9 month break from this game i picked it up and decided to take up gunlance; as the only weapon i have never truly put time into throughout the entire series. With the addition of the styles and hunting arts I dont think ive ever had so much fun learning a weapon. Charge blade was a close second. Sure its very technical. Sure there isnt much reward to mastering your heat gauge and the weapon related skills are expensive to invest in. Doesnt change the fact that its very engaging to bury a monster in a mountain of flames.

Still playing the demo, (game comes out tomorrow and I can't be happier) so I decided to fool around with adept gunlance some more. And holy crap it's strong. Learn how to be patient with adept guard and manage that heat gauge, and you'll be doing so much damage! It's beautiful. Try it if you haven't before. It feels sooooo good. The arts are so strong that they probably had to nerf the gunlance to compensate. The dragon blast also charges super fast (compared to normal, unmodified wyvern fire). So make sure to ALWAYS LAND THOSE.

Seems even more complicated than before to be efficient (you have to manage your heat gauge on top of the ammo and evade lancing... I mean, seriously?). So I would rather say it will be worse than before.
@Shadowfang99
@Shadowfang99 8 жыл бұрын
+Draclord35 Evade lancing isn't the only way to use a Gunlance. in mh4u I played through the whole game using only Gunlance and I didn't evade Lance I just played with the shells and thrusts as it was meant to be used and it worked great. What really hurts Gunlance in generations is no artillery God. that was the only thing keeping this weapon alive and I really doubt it will be G rank viable without it. I will still try to the best with the weapon this time around but, I fear Lance will just overshadow it now and Lance isn't even all that great to begin with so that says a lot about Gunlance... (Sorry for any bad English lol)

+Howling Houndoom Shelling was useless far into G rank (DLC and 140 GQ). It wasn't worth it damage wise compared to poking with a good honed element GL or blast GL or a relic. Shelling is the bread and butter of GL only on wide GL. Otherwise poking and WF will be most of your damages on long type and poking + full burst will be most of your DPS on normal GL. It sounds like you mostely played wide GL. I must say that striker style on a long GL will probably be great (super easy to stay in the red part of the heat gauge) and adept style on a normal GL is pretty sweet (full quick reload + slam + full burst after parry).
@Shadowfang99
@Shadowfang99 8 жыл бұрын
+Draclord35 Nice observation there I only used wide Gunlance since I thought at the time it was the best way to use GL, of course this wasn't always the case. I have played the Demo quite al lot and I have to agree. I think striker Gunlance will be quite good because all three GL exclusive arts seem great! I think that Gunlance will be able to pull through the redesign but we will have to wait and see.
@Draclord35
@Draclord35 8 жыл бұрын
+Howling Houndoom Indeed. I'm reconsidering my opinion about adept GL though. The shield animation is painfully slow (so, forget about reloading without doing a successful guard) and you lose the ability to "run'n shell" which is very practical to manage the heat gauge and close the gap between you and the monster. What you can do on a successful guard isn't that great IMO. Quick reload of 5 shots is awesome (but you can barely do it the normal way anymore) and the full combo is way too long (rarely touched narga with the FB at the end). Aerial is awesome though. Never thought I would enjoy it but the jump is actually pretty good for mobility (hopefully it will work well with evade GLing).

The Blast Dash appears to add some much needed mobility while ending in a full-burst and looks fun to boot. It also appears to do mounting damage if done off a ledge. The Great Wyvern Fire is strong, but if they run into it during the move, they suffer much less damage so it needs a large opening to utilize. Wyvern's Breath, on the other hand, is very strong. If in long shot, it hurts to lose the increased damage of your wyvern fire, but it helps the other 2 shot types greatly with increased damage and shelling power. With these 3 strong arts, I'm thinking of maining GL through the solo content.

I really prefer Striker style for Gunlance, it let's me play the weapon like how I did in Freedom Unite, the way I've always preferred it. I never truly got used to the changes they made to Gunlance in Portable 3rd so having the option to go back to old style Gunlancing is great for me.

you haven't taken down a nargacuga in the demo in well under 10 minutes with a gunlance. If you use it right and start out with aerial to ease yourself into a guard weapon by keeping a familiar evade pattern, you can do ridiculous dps.

Hey Adam, What are your thoughts on the Gunlance when being compared to the previous titles? With my experience, in MHFU and MH4U, the gunlance was a very situational weapon, and when the situation, whatever it may be, is in need of a gunlance , it is rather underwhelming, this sort of made me play every weapon except for the gunlance. So what are your thoughts on the current Gunlance?

Bummer about the motion value nerf, but it looks like Normal type shells got a lot of indirect buffs. Not to mention the huge amount of added versatility given to the gunlance with each of the styles. Lancers might be able to adjust to the Gunlance gameplay a lot easier with Aerial and Striker styles, and Adept just looks like loads of fun!

rewatching these to retrain myself for Generations Ultimate...boy it's especially interesting having adjusted to the combos in World, especially for Normal Type Gunlances since chaining slams for constant Full Bursts got so much easier. I'll say this, I know he vouches for Adept Style hard...but no matter how many times I play this game (and I've put in 500+ hours) ...getting the timing for Adept just NEVER happened for me, I hate using it as a result. No matter how many times I try and practice, I can't ever get that Style to work for me. I'll just stick to good ol' reliable Guild Style.

If the yellow gauge was the equivalent of MH4U with the orange and red levels giving 5% and 10% bonuses respectively, it would be awesome. The heat gauge would simply be bonus damage. Instead they decided to nerf your initial damage into the ground to make shelling a requirement....and also lowered shelling damage. Wide GLs are nerfed while Normal is buffed. This is due to shelling damage decrease and the increase in the number of ways you can perform a full burst. I still love my Gunlance but I'm not quite sure why Capcom would take one of the least used weapons in the series and effectively nerf it.

Aerial since the blast is above the players
@SethAbercromby
@SethAbercromby 8 жыл бұрын
I agree, most likely aerial, but the blast can still knock other aerial users out of the air especially when using wide shot, so be mindful of your timing. Full bursts are the easiest to time but the hardest ones to aim. You'll probably end up blasting a bunch of them around when things get crowded. Generally, I'd advise to ping whenever you are about to charge your Wyvern Fire so everyone can clear the blast zone or adept style users can use it for a free evade/block. Personal favorite is Adept Long shot, because once you're in the red, you'd be hard pressed to never find an opportunity to get out a WF.

So from what I've seen playing the demo it looks like the heat gauge unlocks when wyvern fire is active again. You said that with the artillery skills the cooldown goes to 100-90 secs, when you get wyvern fire does it also unlock the heat gauge or does it let u use wyvern fire while the gauge is locked?

@Magmafrost13 8 жыл бұрын
Bukman Poder Rojo The big nerf is more that you're forced to use shells, and use them quite regularly. So for one thing, that's a nerf to versatility, but its also an issue that shells don't do very much damage. They're fun, for sure, but in terms of doing as much damage as possible, they're attacks you want to avoid using. Except now you can't avoid using them. So in terms of DPS, GL was nerfed enormously.

So I've been having a lot of fun with Aerial Style gunlance in the demo, but I have a quick question. Apparently there's this new skill called "Blunt Sword" which increases your weapon's power as you lose sharpness. Does this power boost affect the gunlance's shells, or does it only affect the thrusts? If Blunt Sword does affect shells, that'd be amazing, because the gunlance already goes through sharpness pretty quickly, but less sharpness doesn't really affect it's shells as they ignore a monster's defense.

@bazzadin5213
@bazzadin5213 8 жыл бұрын
It depends on what you want most with your Gunlance. Whilst i don't have any particular sets in mind, there are a few skills that can strengthen specific areas of the the Gunlance and eliminate some of it's weaknesses. A few good ones to keep in mind are Evade Extender, Artillery Novice/Expert, Blunt and Partbreaker. Evade Extender nullifies the Gunlance's lack of mobility completely, and can help aid a more evasive playstyle.. Artillery Novice, and especially Expert make the Heat Gauge much more manageable, shots will fill it up less and wyvern's fire will lower it only half as much. It also buffs the power of shells and Wyvern's Fire considerably, and causes Wyvern's Fire to recharge considerably faster. A fantastic skill pretty much made for the Gunlance. Blunt works well if you use Normal shots a lot, as fullbursts use much more sharpness than standard shelling and stabbing. Great for some extra damage if you can fit it in. Partbreaker is one of my favourites, especially online. Since shelling and Wyvern's Fire deal fixed damage, they're great for breaking hard and annoying parts like Mizutsune's claws, or Uragaan's chin. Partbreaker lets you break these much faster, giving the Gunlance a support-like role in online.

So I found this weapon quite fun to use on 4U and gave it a good shot. I'm not too good at it yet but I enjoy it and will give it a further try on X. The addition of the heat sistem sounds so good, also feels like you are handling an actual war machine, but then they reduce GL attack, so to get the same damage output, you need to keep the heat on point. So that's a nerf. Honestly, why nerfing GL? It was alright. Why not just reduce motion values a bit less? So yellow heat: less damage than 4U, orange: same as 4U, red heat: more damage than in 4U. That would reward players that manage heat system properly. And personally I feel GL could use a buff too. Not saying the weapon is useless, and seems as fun as always. I just can't see why would they add a new weapon mechanic that simply makes it more complicated.

Yep, not much has changed. The gunlance is still a very situational weapon that is tough to learn and master. Almost makes me wish that it wasn't so much fun to use. Great vid as always! Gunlance is probably the least understood weapon. You didn't go into the detail of the significance of raw damage shelling as you have in past GL guides. Every shell is like a barrel bomb. When I play GL, about 90% of my damage is shelling. As for the gauge, its very easy to stay red 95% of the time since wyvernfire 'locks' you in red. When you use shelling as your primary damage source, GL shines. If you build up to LV2 shelling and gunnery right away, GL is by far the strongest early weapon. It is also one of the best for breaking difficult parts, while being able to cut tail, and the defense makes it so you barely need potions. When I play GL I feel like I am torturing the monsters. Still, many people think the GL is weak due to misunderstanding it. Sure - it's is bulky and slow, and can be annoying chasing monsters jumping around while online, but other than that it is an extremely powerful weapon which got a BUFF - not a nerf - if you know how to use it.
@Draclord35
@Draclord35 8 жыл бұрын
Still... no more artillery god... and who was playing wide GL and turtling in G rank anyway? In MH4U G rank you had to go evade GL with long or normal GL to get good results (and mobility, especially with evade dist). The problem here is I doubt GL will be a good decent end game weapon. Wide GL has always been really easy to use. What about evading and having to manage your ammos and your heat bar at the same time? It seems like a lot of work and stress for minimal reward compared to a GS. I don't even see how GL can compete with lances anymore.
@Megaspaceycasey
@Megaspaceycasey 8 жыл бұрын
Its pretty easy. You can full burst to get into the red at any time. Then use Wyvernfire and lock-in the red and then just play it normally. Wide is awesome with aerial where you can full burst like crazy and do massive damage.
