Just a quickie: Against fast monsters, like Odogaron, repositioning yourself with Dodge -> Tackle -> Charge may be very unsafe, so an alternative is Dodge -> Tackle -> Circle for the Jumping Slash. It's fast and has a massive radius, so you can easily aim for the monster's sides and still hit him in the head, while positioning yourself for a safer spot.

I used to be a great sword main, i quit because i realized i was terrible at it, started maining gunlance and became really good at it, then... then i discovered the frozen fish greatsword, i tried it out as a joke not knowing what it would lead to, the beautiful fish showed me the ways of the greatsword, i became skilled at it and i destroyed all in my path I have returned to my greatsword roots all thanks to the great and holy f i s h Edit 2 months later: the fish now destroys all in its path, it is truly the ultimate weapon, when i have it, no monster stands a chance edit 10 months later: i am now a master greatsword user, monsters tremble in fear in the presence of my fish, not even alatreon could stand up to my godlike fish edit 2 years later (i think, idk the counter still says 1 year but im pretty sure its been longer): i have now slain fatalis, the mighty fish slays all in my path, i am now THE hunter, all thanks to the fish

Another few tips: You can effectively charge the tackle, because tackling during the charging attacks makes the tackle do more damage the more you've charged up, and that charge then carries over to the follow up roundslash after a tackle. It's useful for when you realize your charging attack isn't going to hit, so you can instead cancel into the tackle, and then roundslash, because the roundslash has a huge hitbox. The same goes for charging an aerial attack, the follow up roundslash gets the same charge level. Also, you can throw round slashes into your combo after a second charged triangle attack, and then go back to charging a triangle attack after the roundslash and you'll still be at the second triangle attack. So if you have a really long opening, you can do a triangle, triangle, circle, triangle, triangle combo. It's good for times that you don't have enough time to get 2 full combos off, you can still get 2 second tier attacks off in one combo. Also, the roundslash keeps the charge of the triangle attack, so it's some pretty nice extra damage.

Now these are the tips I'm looking for, I watched this video a long time ago but I guess completely forgot about the roundslash, don't really ever use it. Some more things worth noting: - From the Strong Wide Slash you can go directly into a Strong Charge. - You can get to the Strong Wide Slash either after a jumping attack or after doing a Strong Charge. - If you do NOT cancel the Strong Charge (by doing a tackle) you already start at level 2 for the True Charge.

The tip about how to land the true charge slash on a sleeping monster.. I needed that so badly. I was always doing trial and error so much, but knowing i can just walk up, guard, roll away, and pretty much always get the big hit as the wake up is a relief. No more having my team watch me wiff the hits, or have the wake up hit be the small hit. Thanks for everything Arekkz
@orkheus
@orkheus 6 жыл бұрын
I think you should try to cancel your first 2 charge hits and focus strait on your 3rd charge hit, it hit box and positioning. At least that's what I'm trying to do now:) it should be more complicated to do, but in the end of a practice it should become easier to do.

There are some other things you missed. Importantly, when you cancel a charge with tackle, the tackle retains the level of charge you were at. This increases the impact damage. More than that, you can do the jumping wide slash (circle) after a tackle, and if the tackle was charged, so is the jumping wide slash, and it does a good amount of damage when fully charged. Not nearly as much as the TCS, but it's super useful and a great way to dodge and attack while doing a lot of damage.

Just another tip. Something I found in experimenting with this weapon, the guard can be a very viable tool if you spec for lvl 5 Guard. It almost completely negates any damage to weapon sharpness or to health altogether. I've made builds that utilize this tool, allowing me to guard when I know an attack is coming and continue my assault by kicking and tackling. I know it may not be as smooth as using the super armor effect of tackling, but it's still a very viable option in my opinion, if your not used to tackling or are not confident with the timing of your tackle. It also makes for a great defense oriented play style, though I know many great sword users aren't that interested in defense

Great tutorial as always! Just in case you‘re doing the DB tut soon, please don‘t miss out on explaining the fade slash > triangle > roundslash combo. It’s an advanced combo that allows you to position yourself very well to the weak parts of a monster while keep attacking, because you can change directions with the roundslash and then adjust it even better with another fade slash and so on. I have not seen this combo on KZfaq so far, so I thought I‘d mention it Keep it up!

Being hit/hitting someone with the upward swing sending them into space isn't the end of the world like everybody thinks. Sure, it might be annoying if you were about to do a combo but you can do an attack mid air (basically the same as a jumping attack). Using the upswing strategically can be pretty useful actually. I once got launched as the monster wanted to fly away but by attacking mid-flight I could mount the monster bringing it back down.

Ten months late, but MAN... THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO. I downloaded this game during the free trial this past weekend on PS4, and then immediately purchased the game when I ran out of free content. I hadn't played any Monster Hunter since 3U on Wii U, so I was basically an out of the loop old-timer. Your videos helped me back then, and, no surprise, they're gonna be helping me now as I dive into this INCREDIBLE game. I was playing GS the same old Wii U way (was actually working toward an early high rank Quick Draw build, oooof). I thought the tackle was the dumbest move and a bad addition to the game. Your video was a life after and a game changer. Literally. I'm about to go practice fighting Rathian and Rathalos using this new knowledge, and then hopefully I can finally break into High Rank. See you all out hunting! May the Sapphire Star light your way!

IMO, jumping wide slash is underrated. It’s not as strong as the true charge, but charging the strong charge, tackle canceling, and jumping wide slashing (which retains the charge levels) will come relatively close in damage, allowing you to hit a monster hard if you know you won’t have time for a true charge. It’s no true charge, but it’s a decent option if time is short. Just my 2 cents anyway. EDIT: guess I’m not the only advocate lol

Great sword OGs here??? GS since mh1 GS all through the game then GS all through mh3 and I did GS all through mhw but it's better in mhw because true slice and tackle. Most people think great sword is immobile but with roll&tackle you can be mobile asf and still stack your combo up

Something for mention if you do another workshop plus: -when you cancel a charged slash into tackle, the tackle can deal more damage based on the charged slash's level by the time you cancel it. -you can follow up a tackle with a sword slap by pressing R2+triangle

I know this is an older video but I wanted a say your weapon work shops have gotten me hyped about using other weapons to the point where Ive picked up and used just about every weapon you've covered and you've helped me to really find new ways to love this game. I look forward to seeing the rest of the tutorial especially the bow guns since I have no idea how they work to see if they're something I like

I've been a GS user since Unite on PSP and tried plethora of other weapon but none compare to the satisfaction of landing a full charged swing and making the monster fall. I went into this video thinking I don't think I'll learn anything but let's check it out since you can always improve and you know it, I learned something. I didn't know you could tackle out of true charge to delay it, will make good use of that :)

I tried to main Hammers, even tho I prefer hammers more then swords ,and even tho it's so close to be as satisfying as GS GreatSword won this competition) There are so many little, tiny things about GS in action, so many options and defending opportunities so you don't want any other weapon after you master your GS skills to the maximum (and theire is no limits beyond)

You can also do a side slash after tackling out of any charged attack. The interesting thing about this is that the tackle and the side slash will actually also be charged if you do decide to do a full charge before tackling. I usually use this if I can't get to true charge fast enough and still wanna do some damage while repositioning myself. I think you mentioned this in the guide but I just wanted to talk more about it. Great guide man.

For anyone that might be watching this now if you do 1 triangle/Y attack you can do a slinger burst (if you have slinger ammo to go straight into a true charged slash ( you can only do this if you have the iceborne expansion)

Just switched to Greatsword from Bow a couple of days ago, and it's amazing. Landing the level 3 true charge is one of the most satisfying experiences in all of gaming. I'm still a n00b at it, so I miss a lot, but I can kill Teostra and Nergigante with it, so I'm still confident enough to use it against pretty much anything bar Tempered Deviljho and Kirin. Your video will help immensely in getting me to not miss so goddamn much.

Idk if I agree with the structure you chose to describe world's GS. All these routes to reach true charge might seem overwhelming for some players. I would've taught the combo theory of 2 moves reaching true charge. A tackle or a slash counts as one of your 2 actions. Side blow and wide slashes can be used here and there. Creating an understanding isn't always easy, and watching this, I feel there's a better way to illustrate the flow the weapon allows. That being said, there's more than one way to learn, and your approach is by no means incorrect. It's definetley a solid teacher I'd send my newer friends.

Loved it, but there is one more thing you might add. If you let the second charge hit, the true charge must only be charged twice.

Great video, I am preparing myself for Iceborne where I want o play Greatsowrd mainly. This video helped me a lot to get comfortable with the Greatsword moveset, but it is a lot of information compressed in a very short time and you are talking very fast, sometimes hard to follow for a non native speaker. :) It seems to be a quite complex weapon, but I am looking forward to start with this weapon in Iceborne.

I was looking into using the Greatsword for my PC playthrough after playing a couple hundred hours on PS4 with Longsword, and thanks to this video I've been demolishing every monster I come across, often stringing together several knockdowns in a row and grabbing mounts left and right. Thank you, Arekkz, for a very straightforward but in-depth tutorial that introduced me to the true power of a weapon I initially brushed off for being "too slow".
