Welcome Monster Monday: A series where I'll be drawing a monster from Dungeons and Dragons while I talk about it's lore, history in the real world and what they're like to use as a DM or fight as a player.
Thanks to a viewer suggestion from the KZfaq comments from Moses Wayde, in this video, I talk about the Sahoogan, Sawagon, Sa...wogen? Sahuagin!

Hey! So one quick goof here. I mention at one point that I'm drawing a standard issue Sahuagin. I'm actually drawing a Priestess. It slipped my mind while I was recording. Such is life. Enjoy!

I am so glad you tied this back to the Yuan-Ti! In just about every campaign I've run where one or the other appears, I make them allies because I see some interesting similarities between them with them both being evil, secluded races with designs of world conquest, ties to a specific animal, widely varied forms and born infiltrators among them. I usually give them both large empires on a sort of new world type continent where their alliance is born from the practical fact that the Sahuagin want the seas and don't care much for the land and the Yuan-Ti want the land and don't care much for the seas and so can work together to get what they want without much conflict. In my homebrew campaign world they both also have a god in common that they worship, that being a massive sea serpent (inspired by the Norse world serpent) that succeeded in fending off an attack from several storm gods in ancient times but was so exhausted after the fight that it now sleeps coiled beneath the sea and around the continent to this day. Adding in your observations of the contrast between Sahuagin and Sea Elf society and the possibility of the former being mutations of the latter, makes now also want to connect the Drow into all of this (the Drow haven't come up in any of my campaigns in this setting yet and they could fit into the alliance in that they care about the Underdark and not so much the surface). Starts to paint this picture of three subversive civilizations breaking off (or potentially being exiled) from their original peoples and secluding themselves out in a far away, harsh part of the world, making deals with dark, corrupting forces to survive and emerging out the other end of this hardship as great, but dark empires that now have designs to return to where they came from and claim it for themselves. So yeah, basically, thank you for indirectly helping me to flesh out these antagonists. :)

Just stumbled on your channel while looking for some inspiration for the Sahuagin that my party will definitely encounter while sailing from Neverwinter to Balder's Gate. You are an engaging speaker and watching you draw makes me think to myself, "I want to do THAT."

Another super cool Monster Mondays! If I were to do an underwater campaign the big bad would definitely be the Kraken. Which would also be a great Monster Monday special, just saying.

In addition to the Sahuagan -Yuan Ti connection it also mirrors the Drow. Perhaps the Sahuagan we're simply sea elves who ventured to deep into the ocean, and turned to worshipping new gods to survive.

Hey, Gaming Knight. I have a huuuuge list of viewer suggestions, but I'll definitely put the Drow on there. I was thinking of doing a "species dissection" series where I talk about all the playable races so I might pop Drow on that list instead. Whichever comes first! Cheers for the cool suggestion.

As always great video! Like Fierce Mushroom, I have never done a fully aquatic campaign, but have done some sea travel with encounters. I have been scared of water dungeons since my old days of Everquest! I will think about incorporating one when I DM, as long as I don't have to be in it! LOL
@ArcaneForge

Haha, nice one. I'm with you, it's much easier to subject someone to the torture of a water dungeon than it is to swim through one! Thanks for your kind words and for watching!

Jason Dowd - Ha! I played Everquest once back in the day! I attempted to swim across the ocean and was eaten by goblin sharks. And thus ended my Everquest. Come to think of it, I've never played an MMO more than once. I played WoW exactly once before getting bored and ditching it, same thing for Guild Wars 2. I just can't get into MMO's i guess.

I've never been in a campaign like that myself but I do know a friend who's DM had the brilliant idea of having a underwater campaign in a deep sea Trench that stretched all the way down to the underdark where a group of mind flayers we're trying to create a stellar ship and oddly one of the player characters was one of these fishy Fellows if you're interested I'll get in contact with them and see if I can get any more details about it =)

telenNG - I don't know about a whole campaign underwater, but as a session or two with that idea is pretty fantastic. I love the idea of the trench stretching into the underdark. Definitely gonna work that into a campaign.

Arcane Forge ok I got some more details it was a sub campaign set in their main campaign basically they made an alliance the main characters that is with the aquatic races who had quite a large intelligence as a fight they recently had with a dracolich had ended but the body and the tether for the creature had Fallen into the ocean in the worst part of the ocean wear an Elder brain and it's mind flayers found it and we using it as a power source for ship they we're going to use to escape the planet however by doing so it would have devastated everything it would have come in contact with as it would siphon life from everything around it to power the ship so they managed to persuade the undersea dennisons to help them make a teleportation circle inside the ship and this sub campaign was how these group of under sea dwellers did with this trial interesting idea from a DM perspective though I think it might have been a little bit dangerous doing it this way as if they had failed that would have been the end of the campaign and the main characters of the players would have had no input whatsoever it seems a little weird but maybe that's just my opinion

Sahuagin is also pronounced suh-hoo-uh-ghin, as found on official sources, and in audio from Baldur’s Gate 2.

They ignore evolutionary tempo, but mutation that makes a creature look like a predator, or mimics it's own prey in some fashion exist in nature. They've just taken some fantasy liberties with the process. I'd also seen another take on Sahuagin that they continue to grow through life just like fish, so the more powerful barons and such have grown into them. Maybe? Lots of good info here and... a goblin shark variant?!? That is genius!

My players will get on a gallon and try to cross the sea at some point. They can expect a nasty seastorm followed by a pirate crew of these coming aboard. Rough and vicious coral clubs, stingray shortswords complete with the poison sac still attached, jellyfish toss bags, barnacled shark or squid leather armor...

Nice! I like the music. Never had an entirely aquatic campaign, did have a pirate side quest in a D&D game I was DMing. But the players missed it entirely. I was so excited for it too. I mean a pirate crew with a Rakshasha captain sounds awesome right?

Arcane Forge - I might try it again one day. In the campaign this was in, they were tracking an assassin who had murdering military officers and political officials preparing for an impending revolution. The party had followed him to a port town where a Rakshasha posing as a seafaring merchant had just started to set up. The party bought a few misc items, potions and such from him and made the mistake of discussing details of their mission with this seemingly friendly merchant. So the Rakshasha starts killing people in the same way as the assassin to throw people off his trail. I had set the dc for his insight check pretty low, with the idea that they'ed question him and discover his involvement. I had dropped a few clues that pointed towards him but they went unnoticed. In the end, they questioned nearly everyone but him, who they never once doubted. It ended up being the Rakshasha who sailed them across the sea. In their absence, he killed all his detractors and political opponents and installed himself as governor, running a protection racket from his mansion and using his pirate crew to enforce it. But the party never got to meet the pirates face to face because they never thought to insight check the merchant.
