A video of all of the boss battles from Bandai's 1989 NES game Monster Party and the unreleased Japanese prototype, Parody World: Monster Party (パロディワールドモンスターパーティー).
I have translated all of the Japanese text from prototype version. The video has been edited to show the English translations instead of the originally shown Japanese text.
There are some really neat differences between the versions, but they are both really pretty bizarre. The parody theme of the prototype is cool, though, for all of its classic movie character references (including Gremlins, Planet of the Apes, Medusa, etc).
At first I thought that the chameleon boss was parodying that super creepy scene in the old movie When a Stranger Calls Back. Does anyone else remember being terrified at that movie as a kid? At the scene where the guy creeping around in the woman's apartment looks like the bricks and just stands there watching her without her noticing? Brrrrrr Anyways, this game is four years older than that movie, so obviously it wasn't the basis, but still. It instantly brought back the memory of that movie. Probably the first time I've thought of the movie at in in god knows how many years.
Anyways, there's a butt-ton of hilarious creativity on display here, and it's all from a really obscure, hardly recognized title. I hope you enjoy it!

The well boss is a story of a japanese woman killed in her house by a burglar then he dumped her body down into the well. Every night, her spirit appears in the well and count all the coins she lost. That is why you see the well in the game counting.Edit: ok so i looked around and found that the most common version of this story is the spirit counting the broken plates instead. The story name is Banchai Sarayashiki

I was dicking around the ROM Hacking site once and found a neat fan translation of the Japanese prototype that makes direct references to the horror movies that the bosses parody (Like the plant saying "Feed me, Seymour!")

Strange part, the NES version is darker in it’s text, and the Famicom Prototype didn’t have the creepy horror music in the 1st stage when that tree changes

lol....was I like the only one that thought the minotaur was a goat when I was a kid?XD Esp. on the US title screen. I thought he was supposed to be some kind of angry forgotten paleolithic harvest god or something, and the cows were his livestock. He was actually my favorite too besides the "cat" , the rock star, the sleepy caterpillar, and the thing that blends into the walls in level 6.

I thought the rock star was supposed to be a send up of the whole satanic-panic hysteria of the time. When people thought that rock music was evil.

Love this game, one of my top 5 NES games of all time. If you are so inclined check out the rom hack Monster Party Lets go Again that was released a while back, very well done and changed the game to make it almost a legit sequel.

@Jarock316
@Jarock316 6 жыл бұрын
Both of them come from Japanese folklore. The well is from a story called Banchō Sarayashiki. The tempura is from a folklore that said tempura was the favorite food of Ieyasu Tokugawa, which said he killed himself by eating too much of it.

@@Skycrusher It's not a Ring reference, as I'm pretty sure the original book wasn't even written when the game came out. It's based on an old story that might have inspired Ring as well.

0:31 yo that just tripped me out, is that a man with a mask riding a horse that shoot syringes out his mouth while in the background the statue of liberty is in ruins symbolizing the end of freedom in the US and on top of that the guy saying "get him, then ill let you be my slave"
@DrEggdan
@DrEggdan 3 жыл бұрын
Pretty sure it's supposed to reference Planet of the Apes. They rode around on horseback in the film and then there's the famous Statue of Liberty scene which I'd imagine is what the background is meant to be parodying.
