Brilliant underwater footage. What I found interesting was for the first second or two they didn't realise they were hooked and got me thinking about striking on a bite, maybe I should wait a little longer before hitting the bite. Thanks for a great video.

The paternoster on a short weight leader, is probably the ideal rig for circle hooks, because the fish hooks itself almost immediately as it pulls against the lead.

Biggest perch I ever caught while growing up in Saskatchewan was around one pound. Perch are really great fish to pan fry and eat as their meat is white, firm and flaky. As well, perch takes well being salted and dried for preserving over long periods of time but typically this is only a traditional Asian method of preserving fish for long periods of time where there were no means of refrigeration like we have today.

I have caught 50+ in a session on any number of occasions, and thrown them up on the bank. Take them home for compost as I don't eat fish. Up to a couple of kilo. Just to take the piss and rub it in. However! They are a feral pest that is endangering our natives and they are like rabbits. In fact, it is illegal to return them in many states.

*****YOU MUST READ THIS FULL COMMENT!!***** Nice perch, but certainly no monster as the title implies. I just finished watching a lake fishing video in Norway where they were consistently pulling out insanely sized perch unlike anything I have ever seen before. Can you imagine a 7 pound perch? I couldn’t until I saw that video! They caught a bunch of four pounders and even a few 5 and six pounders! It really was an unbelievable watch! I should link you to it and come back and edit this post for you to see it. Btw it’s ok if your perch aren’t that size, I enjoy seeing one and two pounder perch caught...the right size for the frying pan! They certainly are not monster sized perch though! Keep up the good work, I will be back with that link! ****Here you go my red headed friend! Check out the video below on catching monster perch. It is literally unbelievable how they managed to catch so many insanely huge perch on a single day of fishing. Be sure to watch the second day of fishing as the first part on day one they got skunked. Day 2 is like they received a blessing from the fish god or something! It is so unreal of a video that I had to watch it twice! Enjoy!**** ***Edit: as promised I came back to edit my comment and add the craziest perch video in KZfaq below!*** kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ab6KqZqeu57DeYE.html

Over here in NSW, Australia, introduced Redfin perch are a noxious pest & it’s illegal to return them alive into the waterways. Being such prolific breeders means that it is common to have cricket scores of fish captured in some of our lakes. Pound for pound they aren’t a great fighting fish but they sure do taste great! Caught a pair of monsters last Spring from my kayak about 2kg and 2.5kgs, but funny enough that was all I caught. Still, it was much easier to fillet that pair of fish than fillet a hundred plus 20cm fish.

I understand live baiting is not everyones cup of tea, it's a subject that always raises strong emotions and views. However something is confusing me in these comments I'm reading... Can I just ask all you people out there commenting about how you don't agree with live baiting, why are you here, watching a video that clearly states in the title "live baiting" for perch? I suggest you all f off and watch a video about dead baiting instead. Love your channel. Great video as always, keep em coming dude.

Do you always consider that people who hold different views to you ''obviously know very little''.?...that is called being an exceptionally arrogant presumptious fool I have been fishing for Perch (and Pike) since the early 1960s, and while I never claim that I know all there is to know, but I do know through the long years of trial and error the pros and cons of the different methods. I do know for sure that fishing involves hooks going into fish, a reality which you seem to be uncomfortable with. The word to describe you which readily 'springs to mind' isn't one which I care to post online

Live baiting is one of those archaic methods like gorge hooking which has mainly died out in England where pretty much the whole coarse angling community operate a catch and release policy and of the 7 or so different angling associations that I have been a member of over the last 30 years it is not allowed in any circumstances and will get your membership revoked ( there may be clubs that allow it but I have not come across them ) and as far as I know is universally banned on commercial waters due to the stress caused to the fish. I know that in different countries different ethics apply and if you are talking about a true survival situation then morals are a second consideration but I have found a wobbled dead bait just as effective. Tight lines out there guys.

Wow!! Too many couch anglers in here crying about the poor little live bait ahahahahahaha You do realize what this is right? It's fishing, not a vegan assembly!! People getting over sensitive on fish-care, don't do this and don't do that need a reminder! Next fish you catch, take home, fry it, eat it, remember what the real meaning is to all this. Honor what nature gave you by EATING IT. The whole meaning of catch and release was to.... keep it healthy, so that you can take some more home in the future! Over sensitivity about a fish's life it's just a 21st century schizophrenic phenomenon just like the vegans are.

Amen to that brother, but, unfortunately we(or, at least the majority of people) are not true Christians lol thus everything we do has a selfish background... others? What others? Often, what we think of doing is not what originally triggered the action, is not what motivated the action. 99% of "C&R" anglers do it just because everyone else is doing it... and slowly becomes an obsession.

Caveman Protogonos LOL, you are so wrong...Using alive fish as a bait is torturing to the bait fish and fishing should not be torturing. using alive bait fish is pure cruelty to animals. Responsibility is part of fishing and that means for example not to cause unnecessary pain and suffering to animals. Sorry to say but you sound like weak and insecure wannabe psychopath teeny bopper who think that he is a tough guy when being cruel to helpless animals. Be a real man and be responsible on your actions. You give bad reputation all the good fisher and hunter by being a total asshole. ps. your ultimate egocentric way to see world and people's actions is unnatural. naturally humans are build to work together and do non-egotistic actions. In the time of cavemen you would be punished because of your sociopath and egocentric approach. Now you can play with your delusional ego and be a super egoistic, but that is a false which will backfire to you big time.

In Sweden, "Monster Perch" weighs in at two kilogram, or in excess of four pounds. The most extreme of them, might be as heavy as four kilogram or seven pounds. It has bothered my mind, how they can actually catch their prey, with that miniscule tail-fin , thus low drive, unlike the salmonoid fish or the pike. Another thought is their almost micropscopic teeth, compared to the forementioned fish. You can in fact gently hold them in the mouth, using their very small teeth to not loose the grip, until you decide to release them or keep them for food, unhooking them either way.

ZeusesCannons in Croatia Barbel are so easy to catch whenever you see a barbel just throw me sweetcorn and then throw a few pieces of corn on a hook and it always bites that simple! I only got my first proper rod this year but last year I caught 3 big barbel in 10 minutes just with those rods which you use for minnows, which just have one circle at the end of it which you tie your line to and no reel
@taraskovacevic9345

ZeusesCannons I think that they bite on a lot of things, as they have also been known to feed on minnows, also maybe it would be harder to catch them in more heavily fished areas, but it seems to me they take on loads of different baits, and they put up much more of a fight than other fish I have caught of the same size

The Ginger Fisherman Yeah, the point was that it is cruelty to animals...every responsible fisher respect the nature and the animals. Specially you should respect fish, because you are a fisher. And because you make videos, which many watch. So they learn good and bad habits from you. You should specially think kids and children who watch your videos...

+merry ferry agreed, in a fast stream you can easily substitute a plastic fish or a long thin silver spoon. This is not a good image of fishing to broadcast, when our hobby is continually under threat from animal rights folks. Good fishing action and great footage, wish I had an aquarium like that but quit the live baits, it's not necessary.

+Trent Mcintosh I am not trolling. Fish also feel pain and suffer. There is lots of artificial bait for use. For 99% people fishing is a hobby, so no need for torturing the fish as a bait. Least what a fishers can do for the fish is not cause any unnecessary pain and suffering while fishers are practicing their hobby. In spite of the fact fisher take all from the fish, the life of the fish, they should not cause any unnecessary pain and suffering to the catch or other fish...

Great video. Beautiful fish. I’ve used circle hooks for a long time. I find that if you try to set the hook when a fish bites you will most likely pull the hook right out of it’s mouth. On the other hand, if you let them take off with the bait and then just reel down on them the hook finds it’s way to the corner of the mouth and sets itself. I love not injuring the fish.

Biggest issue using the circle hook, the individual fishing has to allow time for the fish to actually hook itself. Thoroughly enjoyed watching you having a great time catching perch.

Mark, I have been watching many of your videos filmed in such clear water but have never imagined how much rubbish is thrown in your rivers. Ive seen umbrellas, road cones and some very nice fish. really enjoying the videos

Perch know they are delicious is my take on this. We use bronze hooks for panfish and cut the line if they are gut hooked. The acid in their stomach takes care of the hook. YEHAA from East Ky

That looks like a river I know in Wilts. Of course, that's the only river I know in the UK, so I might be wrong. As far as live bait goes, those perch sure seem to approve. Beautiful water and beautiful fish. Good on ya, mate!

The Perch we have in North America while looking almost identical to European perch, are no where near as big! Ours are more elongated and not as chunky or as thick as yours. I was watching a clip about some perch being caught in Holland and those things were the size of Largemouth Bass, some being over 5 pounds!! Thats unheard of over hear for a yellow perch!! That last one you caught that you guessed at half a pound would be considered huge over here! Ive also noticed that a 12 in perch from Europe is much thicker and heavier than the same sized American perch!! Perch are my favorite eating fresh water fish, so if yours taste as good as ours, Im really jealous!! LOL!! Also you have a fish called Zander which is almost identcal to 2 fish native here one being the Walleye, and the other being the Sauger and they've been cross-bred producing whats called a Saugeye which have been planted extensively in many states and in some places have out competed both parent stocks and are the most abundant of the 3 in many lakes and rivers. Walleye get bigger than Sauger, and Saugers seem to be more easily caught and the Saugeye get bigger than Saugers and are more easily caught than Walleyes, being a bit more aggressive it seems. Your Zanders get even bigger than Walleye, and can interbreed with them as well as with Saugers so it is illegal to plant Zanders in the U.S. and Canada. Also the Zander, Walleye,Sauger and Perch are all very closely related fish. Keep up the good fishin, thanks for the videos!!!

I was doing a bit of wasp bashing this morning with 1 inch plastics, as I was landing a little perch a huge perch appeared from no where and swallowed up the little wasp on my line, but as the little size #12 jig head was just in the mouth of the little perch the monster perch just spat it out as I struck. Shows how effective live bait could be however for catching monster perch

So many fish in that river! Maybe two years ago but still! I baited 3 spots, around a huge fallen tree, a little back eddy and a wier pool on the Wensum last weekend and didnt have anything, didn't see any signs of fish AT ALL. I've fished for 22+yrs and am very capable, but I've never seen such a beautiful river be so devoid of fish! If you search river wensum otters on youtube you can see why.
