Time-lapse footage of spectacular gust front shelf clouds from four different severe thunderstorms moving in and around Charleston, West Virginia from 2006 to 2009. Parts of the shelf clouds literally drag across the ground as the leading edge of strong outflow winds impacts. Normal-time audio from each storm is overlaid. Shelf clouds are fascinating 😍 We have been getting them a lot lately in Delaware. Our recent one yesterday was truly terrifying and beautiful. I literally thought there was a wall cloud hidden in there because of how green, dark and intensifying the clouds were getting.

This town is Charleston, West Virginia, where in live 5 or 6 yrs ago we had a "Derecho" go through a lot of lightning & high wind. Sounds like you weather, so you know what a Derecho is.

I saw the best shelf cloud ever today!! Just the structure on it was amazing and you could even see a slight swirl on the smooth leading edge but below it was very ragged scud claws just stretching down...and the lightning CGs were intense!

I remember watching one of these things come straight at me while I was playing center-field in a Junior College baseball game in Concordia, Missouri way back when. Being a California boy, I had never seen anything like it... everything was calm until that cloud rolled over us...the temperature dropped like 20 degrees and the wind / rain was instantaneous... needless to say, that was it for the game lol

It’s called a shelf clouds. It forms when cold air from the storm pushes against cloud and warm air in front of the shelf cloud circles around it. Giving it its shape

This video Charleston, West Virginia where I live, 5 or 6 yrs ago we had Derecho go through. We had no idea what a Derecho was, we do now. Very high wind and a lot of lightning, very little rain.

in the us these types of thunderstorms are called super cells and they can produce tornadoes

This video is of my hometown Charleston, West Virginia. We get some terrible storms, mainly from the west, but the bad ones come from the South. We had a "Derecho" 5 or 6 yrs ago that was bad it actually hit Columbus Ohio and then hit us. What a storm. No tornadoes a lot of lightning and high wind.

This is my hometown Charleston, West Virginia and we can have some terrible thunder & lighting storms. Being a Mid-Atlantic State we get storms usually from the west and south.

Today in Charelston they are having terrible weather, and it is moving up into several counties North to East. It is said to be moving up to 60 mph and said to go into a save place in your home. Just saying as a warning so people can be safe today.

At certain scenes looks as if the clouds are actually coming out of the ground on those hills. If it wasn't for the lightning that would have been a cool thing to be in the middle of a forming shelf cloud. Cool video. Hope this spring here in TX is full of these type storms.

Roll cloud. A roll cloud (Cloud Atlas name volutus) is a low, horizontal, tube-shaped, and relatively rare type of arcus cloud. They differ from squall lines by being completely detached from other cloud features. Roll clouds usually appear to be "rolling" about a horizontal axis.

I love watchin storms, but for some reason here in Akron, they usually pass around us alot, but when they dont, we get these terrible ones were things get hairy really fast.. Can't ever have a nice calm storm 😅😑

A storm wall once came where I lived in southern ohio and once it flew over us I had to help 2 of my friends home because they were crying their eyes out. And they like storms. THATS HOW BAD IT WAS! But I stayed outside (until my hair started to raise up so I ran like hell back inside)

This video is my hometown Charleston West Virginia, we get a lot of lightning and thunderstorms. Charleston is in the Kanawha Valley surrounded by mountains and that makes the thunder double the sound.

Yeah, I think it's probably moving at, at least 90-100kph but I'm not a storm chaser or meteorologist so I don't know.
